Active macro-zone approach for incremental elastoplastic-contact analysis
2013
The symmetric boundary element method, based on the Galerkin hypotheses, has found an application in the nonlinear analysis of plasticity and in contact-detachment problems, but both dealt with separately. In this paper, we want to treat these complex phenomena together as a linear complementarity problem. A mixed variable multidomain approach is utilized in which the substructures are distinguished into macroelements, where elastic behavior is assumed, and bem-elements, where it is possible that plastic strains may occur. Elasticity equations are written for all the substructures, and regularity conditions in weighted (weak) form on the boundary sides and in the nodes (strong) between cont…

Primary Student-Teachers’ Practical Knowledge of Inquiry-Based Science Teaching and Classroom Communication of Climate Change
2015
A teacher’s practical knowledge contains the teacher’s beliefs about the goals, values and principles of education that guide his or her actions in the classroom. There is still a lack of knowledge about how teachers’ practical knowledge influences their teaching. The present study examines student teachers’ practical knowledge in the context of teaching climate change in elementary schools. Participating student-teachers planned their lessons using the principles and ideas of inquiry-based science teaching and the communicative approach. The same two approaches were applied in analysing the lessons, providing a broader basis on which to study student-teachers’ beliefs about teaching scienc…
A taxonomy of dual career development environments in European countries
2020
Research question. The last decade has seen an increase in empirical research associated with dual careers in sport, with a particular focus on understanding and developing individual characteristics which are important to ensure success in sports and education or a vocation. More recent work has, however, also identified the importance of environmental factors in ensuring successful dual career outcomes. The aims of this study, therefore, are to: (a) identify and classify the different types of dual career development environments (DCDEs) and (b) provide outlines of the key features of the environments identified. Research methods. To achieve these aims, this study adopted the procedure of…
Proanthocyanidins and Where to Find Them: A Meta-Analytic Approach to Investigate Their Chemistry, Biosynthesis, Distribution, and Effect on Human He…
2021
Proanthocyanidins (PACs) are a class of polyphenolic compounds that are attracting considerable interest in the nutraceutical field due to their potential health benefits. However, knowledge about the chemistry, biosynthesis, and distribution of PACs is limited. This review summarizes the main chemical characteristics and biosynthetic pathways and the main analytical methods aimed at their identification and quantification in raw plant matrices. Furthermore, meta-analytic approaches were used to identify the main plant sources in which PACs were contained and to investigate their potential effect on human health. In particular, a cluster analysis identified PACs in 35 different plant famili…
The use of mobile technology for online shopping and entertainment among older adults in Finland
2017
Older adults use mobile devices for online shopping as often as younger adults.Mobile-based entertainment use is most typical for younger male adults.Older female adults use mobile-based entertainment least frequently.Age, household structure and high education predict mobile-based online shopping.Mobile-based entertainment use is best predicted by age and gender. Older adults are becoming an important market segment for all internet-based services, but few studies to date have considered older adults as online shoppers and users of entertainment media. Utilising the concept of life course, this article investigates the use of mobile technologies for online shopping and entertainment among …
Primary Epithelial Ovarian Neoplasms: New Concepts Concerning Origin, Pathogenesis and Classification Based on Morphology, Immunomarkers, Molecular F…
2011
The World Health Organization (WHO) classification of ovarian tumors, which first appeared in 1983 and since then has undergone a number of revisions, is based on morphologic features as well as on the concept that each category of ovarian tumors develops from a specific ovarian cell. According to this histogenetic classification, all the epithelial ovarian neoplasms are derived from the ovarian surface epithelium and/or from ovarian inclusion cysts, which are lined by the above epithelial cells. In recent years, a new approach to morphologic data, increasing presumptive evidence that the cell of origin of most, if not all, ovarian epithelial tumors may be extraovarian, especially from fall…
User behavior in Smart and Sustainable Offices (SSO)
2017
Smart and Sustainable Offices (SSO) require synergies between technologies and users behaviors. The sociotechnical approach considers users’ motives, attitudes, cognitions and behaviors when designing work environments. This note will describe those phenomena in office environments. It will also present a set of tools to assess those phenomena and will provide guidelines to improve them.
Learning-Student Methods. Their Effects on Learning Strategies and Approaches to Learning of University Students
2021
At the university we are in a process of change, from a teaching centered approach to a learning centered approach. It is important to have scientific data about the use of such methodologies to evaluate both its usefulness and its functionality. The aim of this research was to assess whether the application of learning-centered methods would lead to an improvement in students' learning strategies and approaches to learning compared to the control group, which received training with a teaching-centered format. A quasi-experimental cohort design, with a non-equivalent control group. The sample consisted of 243 Pedagogy and Social Education students at the University of Valencia, who were stu…
Analysis of Social Media Impact on Opportunity Recognition. A Social Networks and Entrepreneurial Alertness Mixed Approach
2020
This paper investigates the effects of social media on entrepreneurial opportunity recognition. Combining the internal and external approaches of opportunity recognition, the study analyzes how social media influences the entrepreneurs in discovering new entrepreneurial opportunities. Structural equation modeling was used in this study, using the variance-based partial least squares (PLS)&ndash
