One-step diagnosis strategy together with multidisciplinary telematics referral perform an effective approach for identifying and treating patients w…
2021
Abstract Introduction and objectives Implementation of a one-step strategy for diagnosis of active Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection would encourage the early diagnosis and reduce the time to access antiviral treatments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a HCV one-step diagnosis compared to the traditional two-step protocol in terms of the time required for patients to be seen by specialists and the time taken to start antiviral treatment. Material and methods A comparative study was carried out to assess two diagnostic algorithms (one-step and two-step) for active HCV infection. Serological markers were quantified using the same serum sample to determine both anti-HCV ant…

Inter-society consensus for the use of inhaled corticosteroids in infants, children and adolescents with airway diseases
2021
Abstract Background In 2019, a multidisciplinary panel of experts from eight Italian scientific paediatric societies developed a consensus document for the use of inhaled corticosteroids in the management and prevention of the most common paediatric airways disorders. The aim is to provide healthcare providers with a multidisciplinary document including indications useful in the clinical practice. The consensus document was intended to be addressed to paediatricians who work in the Paediatric Divisions, the Primary Care Services and the Emergency Departments, as well as to Residents or PhD students, paediatric nurses and specialists or consultants in paediatric pulmonology, allergy, infecti…
Differential metabolic profiling of non-pure trisomy 21 human preimplantation embryos.
2012
Objective To investigate the metabolomic signature of trisomy 21 preimplantation human embryos by a noninvasive approach using mass spectrometry– (MS-) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy– (NMR-) based metabolic profiling platforms. Design A total of 171 spent media samples were collected from day 3 embryos and comparatively analyzed by MS analysis (chromosomally normal embryos, n=15; trisomy 21 embryos, n=15) and a matched control media group (without embryo, n=14) and by NMR spectroscopy (normal embryos, n=39; trisomy 21 embryos, n=35; monosomy 21 embryos, n=24) and a matched control media group (without embryo, n=29). Setting IVF clinic/preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) uni…
Production, regeneration and biochemical precursors of the major components of the defensive secretion of Eurycotis floridana (Dictyoptera, polyzoste…
2000
0965-1748 (Print) Journal Article; The defensive secretion of the cockroach Eurycotis floridana contains three main components, (E)-2-hexenal, (E)-2-hexenol and (E)-2-hexenoic acid, which represented about 98% of the organic phase. The quantity of the aldehyde, alcohol, and acid present in the defensive secretion increased rapidly for 60 days from the imaginal moult. Following artificial discharge, the males were able to regenerate their initial volume of secretion over a 30 day period. To investigate the possible routes of biosynthesis of the three components, E. floridana was injected with 14C-labeled fatty acids and acetate, and the incorporation of 14C into the three components were qua…
Conservative Surgical Treatment of Bisphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw with Er,Cr:YSGG Laser and Platelet-Rich Plasma: A Longitudinal Stu…
2018
Introduction. The management of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ), with no evidence-based guidelines, remains controversial. We aimed to evaluate the efficiency of a conservative surgical treatment combining Er,Cr:YSGG laser and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for the treatment of BRONJ in cancer patients. Methods. We performed a longitudinal cohort study. Inclusion criteria were (1) age ≥ 18 years; (2) cancer diagnosis; (3) treatment with NBP because of the underlying cancer. Results. We consecutively recruited ten patients diagnosed with BRONJ in stage I or II. These patients underwent a surgical laser-assisted therapy together with autologous PRP. At the latest follow-up…
Obesity History as a Predictor of Walking Limitation at Old Age*
2007
Objective: To study whether walking limitation at old age is determined by obesity history. Research Methods and Procedures: In a retrospective longitudinal study based on a representative sample of the Finnish population of 55 years and older (2055 women and 1337 men), maximal walking speed, body mass, and body height were measured in a health examination. Walking limitation was defined as walking speed <1.2 m/s or difficulty in walking 0.5 km. Recalled height at 20 years of age and recalled weight at 20, 30, 40, and 50 years of age were recorded. Results: Subjects who had been obese at the age of 30, 40, or 50 years had almost a 4-fold higher risk of walking limitation compared to non-obe…
Measurement of substrate-induced oxygen uptake during microsomal drug oxidation using a gold micro-electrode.
1975
1. A resin-coated gold micro-electrode has been used for polarographic determination of oxygen concentration in liver microsomal suspensions from phenobarbital-pretreated rats. 2. The rate of oxygen uptake on addition of an NADPH-regenerating system and the rate after addition of various substrates of the mixed function oxidase system were measured. The rate of oxygen uptake was faster in the presence of substrate than in the presence of NADPH alone. 3. Kinetic constants (Km and V max) for biphenyl, hexobarbital, ethylmorphine, naphthalene and SKF 525-A measured by this technique compare favourably with those obtained either by measurements of NADPH oxidation, or chemical measurements of su…

Regio- and stereo-selectivity in the induction of peroxisome proliferation by substituted hexanoic acids
1993
Summary Quantitative structure-activity relationship is an effective tool in order to predict drug potency. A similar approach is actually developed for peroxisome proliferation induced by substituted carboxylic acids issued from plasticizer metabolism in rats. The study is focused on acids found in rat urine after adipic diester dosings. Size, location of the substituted group and length of the chain have been studied. 3-D structure has also been taken in account for 2-ethyl hexanoic acids. The results obtained so far demonstrate that peroxisome proliferation potencies of the considered acids are modified according structure changes. At this time location of the group along the chain appea…
