Solving the Problems of Inspection Planning under Parametric Uncertainty of Underlying Models

Certain fatigued structures must be inspected in order to detect fatigue damages that would otherwise not be apparent. A technique for obtaining optimal inspection strategies is proposed for situations where it is difficult to quantify the costs associated with inspections and undetected failure. For fatigued structures for which failures (fatigue damages) are only detected at the time of inspection, it is important to be able to determine the optimal times of inspection. Fewer inspections will lead to lower fatigue reliability of the structure upon demand, and frequent inspection will lead to higher cost. Explorations of familiarity produced by words with specific combinations of letters

We explore familiarity-based recognition using a paradigm devised by Parkin et al. (2001). The task consists of the creation of two lists of words written with one of two different subsets of letters of the alphabet. We manipulated study time (50, 100, 200, 500 ms per word) of words with different letter probabilistic structure to those originally used by Parkin et al. Letter-based familiarity responding was robust and present even at rates producing otherwise chance performance. An efficient framework for the elasto-plastic reliability assessment of uncertain wind excited systems

Abstract In this paper a method to efficiently evaluate the reliability of elastic-perfectly plastic structures is proposed. The method is based on combining dynamic shakedown theory with Subset Simulation. In particular, focus is on describing the shakedown behavior of uncertain elasto-plastic systems driven by stochastic wind loads. The ability of the structure to shakedown is assumed as a limit state separating plastic collapse from a safe, if not elastic, state of the structure. However, if the data is not available at once or consists of billions of instances, these algorithms easily become infeasible with respect to memory and run-time concerns. Automatic Dictionary Creation by Sub-symbolic Encoding of Words

This paper describes a technique for automatic creation of dictionaries using sub-symbolic representation of words in cross-language context. Semantic relationship among words of two languages is extracted from aligned bilingual text corpora. This feature is obtained applying the Latent Semantic Analysis technique to the matrices representing terms co-occurrences in aligned text fragments. The technique allows to find the “best translation” according to a properly defined geometric distance in an automatically created semantic space. Experiments show an interesting correctness of 95% obtained in the best case.
