Current Problems in the Modelling of Photochemical Reactors

1985

Photochemical reactors are examined from the point of view of the main problems connected to their modelling. By distinguishing the diverse meanings of kinetic models and the varied objectives in establishing models, a particular attention is devoted to the following aspects of homogeneous photoreactors: steady state condition, effect of stirring and mixing, effect of the shape of the reactor and of the position of the light source, light emission models, scale up. For the heterogeneous systems only general considerations on kinetic models in heterogeneous photocatalysis and on the problems related to the use of fluidized bed photoreactors are done.

Modeling of an annular photocatalytic reactor for water purification: oxidation of pesticides.

2004

Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) over titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a “green” sustainable process for the treatment and purification of water and wastewater. However, the application of PCO for wastewater treatment on an industrial scale is currently hindered by a lack of simple mathematical models that can be readily applied to reactor design. Current models are either too simplistic or too rigorous to be useful in photocatalytic reactor design, scale-up, and optimization. In this paper a simple mathematical model is presented for slurry, annular, photocatalytic reactors that still retains the essential elements of a rigorous approach while providing simple solutions. The model extends the appl…

Cis-15 intermediates of biohydrogenation in the duodenal flow of cows receiving linseed

2006

Duodenal samples from a previous experiment (Akraim et al., 2006) were reanalysed for determination of cis-15 intermediates of ruminal biohydrogenation (BH). Three dry Holstein cows fitted with a duodenal cannula received a diet with 14% (dry matter basis) raw linseed. C18 fatty acids (C18FA) represented 6.3% of dietary dry matter, and contained 57.8% of C18:3. After 18 days adaptation, on each cow, twelve samples of duodenal flow were taken over 3 days, composited, and analysed for FA composition. Cis-9,trans-11,cis-15C18:3 and trans-11,cis-15C18:2 (CLnA) were identified by GC-MS. The proportion of CLnA was low, in spite of the high C18:3 intake. The first step of C18:3 BH, isomerisation t…

Antioxidant properties of water-soluble gum from flaxseed hulls

2016

International audience; Soluble flaxseed gum (SFG) was extracted from flax (Linum usitatissimum) hulls using hot water, and its functional groups and antioxidant properties were investigated using infrared spectroscopy and different antioxidant assays (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS), reducing power capacity, and β-carotene bleaching inhibition assay), respectively. The antioxidant capacity of SFG showed interesting DPPH radical-scavenging capacity (IC50 SFG = 2.5 mg·mL(-1)), strong ABTS radical scavenging activity (% inhibition ABTS = 75.6% ± 2.6% at 40 mg·mL(-1)), high reducing power capacity (RPSFG = 5 mg·mL(-1)), and po…

Weld pool surface temperature measurement from polarization state of thermal emission

2014

This paper presents a passive polarimetry method using a division of aperture optical device in order to measure the temperature distribution at the weld pool surface. Thermal emission from a hot liquid metal was investigated at a near-infrared wavelength corresponding to a blind spectral window of a helium plasma generated during gas tungsten arc welding process. The refractive index of liquid metal and the surface radiance are deduced from the polarisation state of thermal emissions. Based upon the knowledge of both characteristics, the temperature distribution can be calculated. Conseil Régional de Bourgogne

Flavor release from food emulsions varying in their composition in fat and proteins and its effect on flavor perception

2008

International audience; Model food emulsions were produced with two different types of fat and two batches of proteins. Aroma release of three compounds was studied by solid-phase microextraction in function of the temperature, in parallel with time intensity evaluation of the fruity perception. Time intensity showed that partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil instead of anhydrous milk fat led to a higher intensity and longer duration of the fruity perception. Furthermore, an effect of the nature of protein was observed only with partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil. The effect of the nature of fat on aroma perception was explained by the physicochemical data on aroma release. The effect …

Anti-hypertensive effects of Rosuvastatin are associated with decreased inflammation and oxidative stress markers in hypertensive rats

2009

International audience; Among their pleiotropic effects, statins exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate in normotensive (WKY) and in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) the effect of rosuvastatin (ROSU) treatment on (1) plasma inflammation markers and endogenous NO synthase inhibitor (ADMA) levels, (2) reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by circulating leukocytes and (3) vascular oxidative stress and tissue inflammation markers. Plasma cytokines were higher in SHR than in WKY, except for IL-4, which was lower in SHR than in WKY. SHR monocytes exhibited higher production of ROS than did WKY monocytes. In the experimental conditions, RO…

Effects of a water-soluble extract of rosemary and its purified component rosmarinic acid on xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes in rat liver

2001

The effects of a water-soluble extract (WSE) of rosemary and its purified antioxidant rosmarinic acid (RA) on xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes (XME) were studied in rat liver after dietary administration. The modulation of phase I enzymes such as cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A, 2B, 2E1, 3A, and phase II enzymes such as glutathione S-transferase (GST), quinone reductase (QR) and UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) was evaluated by measuring enzyme activities with specific substrates. Protein levels of CYPs and rGST A1/A2, A3/A5, M1, M2 and P1 were measured using antibodies in Western blots. Caffeic acid was also studied because it results from RA biotransformation in rat after oral administration. Ma…
