When Competition Is Pushed Too Hard. An Agent-Based Model Of Strategic Behaviour Of Referees In Peer Review
2013
This paper examines the impact of strategic behaviour of referees on the quality and efficiency of peer review. We modelled peer review as a process based on knowledge asymmetry and subject to evaluation bias. We built two simulation scenarios to investigate largescale implications of referee behaviour and judgment bias. The first one was inspired by “the luck of the reviewer draw” idea. In this case, we assumed that referees randomly fell into Type I and Type II errors, i.e., recommending submissions of low quality to be published or recommending against the publishing of submissions which should have been published. In the second scenario, we assumed that certain referees tried intentiona…
Quest’ultimo provvedimento legislativo assume peculiare rilevanza in …
Screening for new accumulator plants in potential hazards elements polluted soil surrounding Peruvian mine tailings
2016
Abstract Tailings usually provide an unfavorable substrate for plant growth because of their multi-stress environment. Plants growing on naturally metal-enriched soils are of particular interest in this perspective, since they are genetically tolerant to high metal concentrations and have an excellent adaptation to extreme conditions. Soil and plant samples were taken in Peru, at a polymetallic mine (mainly Ag, Pb and Cu) in Cajamarca Province, Hualgayoc district. Top soils (0–20 cm) were analyzed for physical and chemical properties by standard methods. Total As, Cu, Pb and Zn concentrations in top soils were determined by ICP–OES. Similar metals in plants were analyzed separately (aerial …
E-Hitz: A word frequency list and a program for deriving psycholinguistic statistics in an agglutinative language (Basque)
2007
We describe a Windows program that enables users to obtain a broad range of statistics concerning the properties of word and nonword stimuli in an agglutinative language (Basque), including measures of word frequency (at the whole-word and lemma levels), bigram and biphone frequency, orthographic similarity, orthographic and phonological structure, and syllable-based measures. It is designed for use by researchers in psycholinguistics, particularly those concerned with recognition of isolated words and morphology. In addition to providing standard orthographic and phonological neighborhood measures, the program can be used to obtain information about other forms of orthographic similarity, …
An investigation of the mechanical properties of rubber modified asphalt mixtures using a modified dry process
2017
Incorporating recycling tyres into asphalt mixtures contributes to solving a serious environmental problem as well as the potential of improving the mechanical performance of asphalt mixtures. The recycled tyre rubber is added by two technologies known as the dry process (when rubber particles are treated as an aggregate modifier) and the wet process (when rubber particles are treated as a binder modifier). Although, the dry process is easier and requires minimal or no modification in the asphalt plant, the inconsistency in field performance makes the dry process not widely used. The main reason for this is believed to be the lack of interaction between the rubber particles and binder. In o…
Green geopolymeric concrete using grits for applications in construction
2018
Abstract This work investigates the production a green geopolymer-based concrete for a sustainable construction material using biomass wastes from a kraft pulp industry: fly ash (as main alumina-silicate source) and grits (as aggregate). Moreover, a simple, reproducible, ambient temperature, and low-cost manufacture is followed. Mix design aims to maximize wastes incorporation and optimize the mechanical performance. Preliminary tests indicate that the used wastes may be successfully employed to produce green geopolymeric concretes with satisfying mechanical performance (up to 18 MPa), according to the European standards. Furthermore, they represent a viable solution to reduce the environme…
Clinical and Biochemical Correlations of Aggression in Young Patients with Mental Disorders
2018
Hyperdopaminergia has been identified at impulsive or psychotic patients, the polymorphism of COMT or other enzymes that metabolize dopamine could be involved. The deficiencies of the serotoninergic system in suicidal behaviour has been mentioned by many studies that indicate the reduction of 5-HT, 5-HIAA in CSF or 5-HTT polymorphism. Young patients with psychotic or depression symptoms manifest, frequently, aggressive and self-harm behaviour. Besides the association between the young age and the aggressivity of the patients with serious mental disorders, our study shows gender differences and this matter is sustained by hormonal factors. The study was conducted at the Gheorghe Preda Psych…
NF-κB pathway activators as potential ageing biomarkers: targets for new therapeutic strategies
2013
Chronic inflammation is a major biological mechanism underpinning biological ageing process and age-related diseases. Inflammation is also the key response of host defense against pathogens and tissue injury. Current opinion sustains that during evolution the host defense and ageing process have become linked together. Thus, the large array of defense factors and mechanisms linked to the NF-κB system seem to be involved in ageing process. This concept leads us in proposing inductors of NF-κB signaling pathway as potential ageing biomarkers. On the other hand, ageing biomarkers, represented by biological indicators and selected through apposite criteria, should help to characterize biologica…
Do aging employees benefit from self-regulative strategies? : A follow-up study
2020
SOC-strategies (selection, optimization, and compensation) are crucial for well-being and adaptation throughout the life course. The workforce is aging rapidly, thus the age-conditional premises of SOC theory require attention. This study explored (1) whether older employees used SOC strategies more often (compared to younger employees), and (2) whether older employees benefited more from SOC strategies in relation to occupational well-being (job burnout, work engagement). The study was based on follow-up data including three occupational subsamples of different age (N = 1,020). There were no significant age-conditional differences in the take-up of SOC strategies. However, older (white-col…
Application of pulsed electric fields in meat and fish processing industries: An overview.
2019
The market demand for new meat and fish products with enhanced physicochemical and nutritional properties attracted the interest of the food industry and academia to investigate innovative processing approaches such as pulsed electric fields (PEF). PEF is an emerging technology based on the application of electrical currents between two electrodes thus inducing electroporation phenomena and enabling a non-invasive modification of the tissues' structure. This review provides an overview of the current knowledge on the use of PEF processing in meat and fish to enhance the physicochemical and nutritional changes, as a preservation method, as well as for improving the extraction of high added-v…
