Synthesis of Peroxyapatite by Hydrothermal Processing
2014
Peroxide ions in apatite provides an additional resource for imparting an antibacterial capability in apatite. A hydrothermal process has been developed for including peroxide ions into the apatite lattice. Three oxygen generation compounds, hydrogen peroxide, ammonium persulphate and paracetic acid were investigated for peroxyapatite generation. Hydrogen peroxide provides the highest peroxide containing apatite. Both the oxygen generation and the apatite lattice formation represented the two critical factors for producing peroxyapatite. Unlike with high temperature processing, the cooling rate did not influence the retained peroxide content. This new process provides a building block for i…
A qualitative examination of performance and energy yield of photovoltaic modules in southern Norway
2010
Three different, commercially available photovoltaic modules have been monitored outdoors in the town of Grimstad, Norway. The present paper describes the experimental setup that was implemented, in particular details of the low-cost electronic loads. Results compare measured performance with manufacturer's data, and temperature measurements enable a comparison with performance at standard test condition temperature. Overall, the monocrystalline module performed best both regarding maximum efficiency and overall energy production, whereas the module based on triple junction amorphous silicon technology had the worst performance considering these criteria. The gross numbers of energy yield c…
Influence of the electro-optical properties of an a-Si:H single layer on the performances of a pin solar cell
2012
We analyze the results of an extensive characterization study involving electrical and optical measurements carried out on hydrogenated amorphous silicon (α-Si:H) thin film materials fabricated under a wide range of deposition conditions. By adjusting the synthesis parameters, we evidenced how conductivity, activation energy, electrical transport and optical absorption of an α-Si:H layer can be modified and optimized. We analyzed the activation energy and the pre-exponential factor of the dark conductivity by varying the dopant-to-silane gas flow ratio. Optical measurements allowed to extract the absorption spectra and the optical bandgap. Additionally, we report on the temperature dependen…
Glass-forming derivatives of 2-cyano-2-(4H-pyran-4-ylidene) acetate for light-amplification systems
2019
Abstract A series of 2-cyano-2-(4H-pyran-4-ylidene) acetate derivatives with triphenyl and 9H-carbazole moieties were synthesized and investigated, mostly for potential applications in organic solid state lasers. Synthesized compounds show remarkable amorphous film formation ability, tunable thermal properties (thermal stability varies from 190 °C to 387 °C and glass transition temperature from 94 °C up to 141 °C) with light absorption from 400 nm to 600 nm and photoluminescence from 600 nm up to 800 nm. Dyes with incorporated mono-styryl- electron donating fragment (KTB, KTBC and KTB3K) showed higher photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) (from 16% up to 23%), significantly lower amplified…
Mechanisms of Spontaneous and Amplified Spontaneous Emission in CH3NH3PbI3 Perovskite Thin Films Integrated in an Optical Waveguide
2020
In this paper, the physical mechanisms responsible for optical gain in ${\mathrm{CH}}_{3}{\mathrm{NH}}_{3}{\mathrm{Pb}\mathrm{I}}_{3}$ (MAPI) polycrystalline thin films are investigated experimentally and theoretically. Waveguide structures composed by a MAPI film embedded in between PMMA and silica layers are used as an efficient geometry to confine emitted light in MAPI films and minimize the energy threshold for amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). We show that photogenerated exciton density at the ASE threshold is as low as $(2.4\ensuremath{-}12)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{16}\phantom{\rule{0.1em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$, which is below the Mott transition den…
Computationally efficient dynamical analysis of optically driven injection-locked GaAs FET oscillators
1995
A computer-aided simulation technique for the dynamical analysis of a class of GaAs FET optically-driven injection-locked oscillators (ODILO's) is presented. By combining a measurement-derived nonlinear model of the illuminated transistor with a phasor-domain analysis method, a first-approximation - but phenomenologically complete - differential model of the synchronized oscillator is derived. Since amplitude and phase of waveform evolutions are directly addressed and evaluated in a stroboscopic-time scale, the calculation of the transient response to modulated input signals can be done in a more user-friendly and computationally efficient manner than possible through conventional time-doma…
Detection of Amyloid-β Fibrils Using Track-Etched Nanopores: Effect of Geometry and Crowding
2021
Several neurodegenerative diseases have been linked to proteins or peptides that are prone to aggregate in different brain regions. Aggregation of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides is recognized as the main cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression, leading to the formation of toxic Aβ oligomers and amyloid fibrils. The molecular mechanism of Aβ aggregation is complex and still not fully understood. Nanopore technology provides a new way to obtain kinetic and morphological aspects of Aβ aggregation at a single-molecule scale without labeling by detecting the electrochemical signal of the peptides when they pass through the hole. Here, we investigate the influence of nanoscale geometry (conical an…
Secondary nucleation and accessible surface in insulin amyloid fibril formation.
2008
At low pH insulin is highly prone to self-assembly into amyloid fibrils. The process has been proposed to be affected by the existence of secondary nucleation pathways, in which already formed fibrils are able to catalyze the formation of new fibrils. In this work, we studied the fibrillation process of human insulin in a wide range of protein concentrations. Thioflavin T fluorescence was used for its ability to selectively detect amyloid fibrils, by mechanisms that involve the interaction between the dye and the accessible surface of the fibrils. Our results show that the rate of fibrillation and the Thioflavin T fluorescence intensity saturate at high protein concentration and that, surpr…
