The potential link between episodes of diverticulitis or hemorrhoidal proctitis and diets with selected plant foods : a case-control study

2021

Diverticulitis and hemorrhoidal proctitis in the population are significant public health problems. We studied the potential association between the intake of certain plant foods and diverticulitis or hemorrhoidal episodes through a case–control study including 410 cases and 401 controls. We used a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. The intake was additionally quantified according to a 24 h recall. The plant foods or derived food products were categorized by their main chemical components into ethanol, caffeine/theine/theobromine, capsaicin, alliin, acids, eugenol, and miscellaneous foods such as curcumin. The mean score for overall intake of plant foods under consideration was …

INTESTINAL INFECTION BY CRYPTOSPORIDIUM IN THREE CHILDREN WITH ABDOMINAL PAIN AND CHRONIC DIARRHOEA

1985

Children infection by Cryptosporidium sp. have been communicated since 1976 usually associated to acute diarrohoeal disease. This protozoa has been isolated recently in SIDA patients with serious illness. Three new cases, the first of spanish pediatric literature, are described in this paper. Children were males; two of them twins. Age ranged 24 to 27 m. All lived in Valencia, and went to infant's school with high stand of living and domestic animal relationship. The most frequent symptom was well located colic abdominal pain with day predominance and 2 months of evolution in the twins. The third case began with abdominal pain and discomfort. Three months before had been treated with Metron…

Food intolerance and chronic constipation: manometry and histology study

2006

BACKGROUND: Chronic constipation in children can be caused by cows' milk intolerance (CMI), but its pathogenesis is unknown. AIMS: To evaluate the histology and manometry pattern in patients with food intolerance-related constipation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-six consecutive children with chronic constipation were enrolled. All underwent an elimination diet and successive double-blind food challenge. All underwent rectal biopsy and anorectal manometry. RESULTS: A total of 14 patients were found to be suffering from CMI and three from multiple food intolerance. They had a normal stool frequency on elimination diet, whereas constipation recurred on food challenge. The patients with food i…

Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis with Olsalazine and Sulphasalazine: Efficacy and Side-Effects

1988

The effects of olsalazine were studied mainly in patients with ulcerative colitis who were intolerant to sulphasalazine, and for relapse prevention. A crossover design with sulphasalazine, 3 g/day, and olsalazine, 1.5 g/day, was applied to compare the side-effects of each drug and to evaluate their therapeutic efficacy. A total of 41 patients with mild or moderately severe left-sided colitis or proctitis were assigned to a randomized treatment schedule. Olsalazine and sulphasalazine were similar in their therapeutic efficacy. Twelve patients complained of adverse effects while on sulphasalazine and 4 patients during olsalazine treatment (p less than 0.05). It is concluded that olsalazine is…

Solitary Rectal Ulcer

1979

Solitary ulcers of the rectum may be traumatic in origin and caused by thermometers, occasionally by digital removal of a fecal impaction, or by deviate sexual behavior. Solitary rectal ulcers may also be a manifestation of Crohn’s disease. Very rarely, ectopic gastric mucosa is their cause. For the vast majority of solitary rectal ulcers, the explanation remains unknown. Occasionally, the ulcers are accompanied by localized inflammation of the mucosa within the distal segment of the rectum with edema, erythema, and circumscribed whitish flecks in a thickened bowel wall covered by excessive secretions. The changes are found predominantly in the ventral portion of the rectum, and in contrast…

Chronic constipation and food intolerance: A model of proctitis causing constipation

2005

OBJECTIVE: Chronic constipation in children can be linked to cow''s milk intolerance (CMI) but the existence of a food intolerance-dependent proctitis is still debated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the histologic data in patients with food intolerance-related constipation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-two consecutive patients (22 M, median age 4 years) with chronic constipation unresponsive to common treatment were enrolled. All patients were put on a cow''s milk-free diet for 4 weeks and those uncured on this diet underwent a subsequent 4-week period of oligoantigenic diet. In the patients cured on elimination diet, a subsequent double-blind food challenge was performed to confirm …

Chronic constipation as a symptom of cow milk allergy

1995

Twenty-seven consecutive infants (mean age, 20.6 months) with chronic "idiopathic" constipation were studied to investigate the possible relation between constipation and cow milk protein allergy (CMPA). The infants were initially observed on an unrestricted diet, and the number of stools per day was recorded. Subsequently the infants were put on a diet free of cow milk protein (CMP) for two periods of 1 month each, separated by two challenges with CMP. During the CMP-free diet, there was a resolution of symptoms in 21 patients; during the two consecutive challenges, constipation reappeared within 48 to 72 hours. In another six patients the CMP-free diet did not lead to improvement of const…

Focal or whole-gland salvage prostate brachytherapy with iodine seeds with or without a rectal spacer for postradiotherapy local failure: How best to…

2016

International audience; PURPOSE: Salvage prostate permanent implant (sPPI) for postradiation local failure provides high rates of biochemical control. The cumulative dose delivered to the prostate and the rectum is still unknown. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We reviewed the postimplant CT-based dosimetry of 18 selected patients who underwent sPPI with I-125 seeds for isolated biopsy-proven local failure several years after external beam radiation therapy. Ten patients had whole-prostate sPPI, and 8 patients had multiparametric MRI-based focal sPPI. In 8 patients, hyaluronic acid (HA) gel was injected into the prostate rectum space. RESULTS: The median cumulative biological effective dose after EB…

Proctitis and constipation: A symptom of food allergy?

2015

Abstract Allergic proctitis can occur in infants and children. It is expressed by feces streaked with blood without other apparent signs. More than 50% of these patients are being breast-fed. Recently, it has been found that a particular symptom of allergic proctitis is constipation, and it is a major cause of consultations in pediatric gastroenterology departments. We carried out a study, which included a series of patients who were seen for chronic constipation that had not responded to the usual therapy. We found that the majority of these patients had a reduction in the layer of mucus coating the rectum, and this sign was associated with intolerance to cow's milk protein and also to oth…
