Diet-specific biomarkers show that high-quality phytoplankton fuels herbivorous zooplankton in large boreal lakes
2014
SUMMARY 1. The zooplankton is a key link in the transfer of energy from primary producers up through aquatic food webs. Previous efforts to quantify the importance of basal resources to aquatic consumers have used stable isotopes (SI) and simple ternary models, including only ‘bulk’ phytoplankton, bacteria or terrestrial particulate organic matter (t-POM). 2. We used a novel Bayesian mixing model based on fatty acids (FA) to quantify the dietary assimilation of seven basal resources, including five phytoplankton groups, pelagic bacteria and t-POM, to Cladocera in large boreal lakes in Finland. To account for trophic enrichment of FA from the diet to consumers, we parameterised the model wit…
Photoferrotrophy: Remains of an Ancient Photosynthesis in Modern Environments
2017
Photoferrotrophy, the process by which inorganic carbon is fixed into organic matter using light as an energy source and reduced iron [Fe(II)] as an electron donor, has been proposed as one of the oldest photoautotrophic metabolisms on Earth. Under the iron-rich (ferruginous) but sulfide poor conditions dominating the Archean ocean, this type of metabolism could have accounted for most of the primary production in the photic zone. Here we review the current knowledge of biogeochemical, microbial and phylogenetic aspects of photoferrotrophy, and evaluate the ecological significance of this process in ancient and modern environments. From the ferruginous conditions that prevailed during most …
La Sala Parpalló en el Centre Cultural La Beneficència (1995-1999)
2020
During the period 1995-1999, the Sala Parpalló was located in the Beneficència Cultural Center of Valencia, sharing the place with the spaces of the Museum of Prehistory, the Museum of Ethnology and the IVEI. In the investigation it exposed a technical file for each of the 57 self-produced exhibitions carried out in the period and a selection of the studies that accompanied them: the files are displayed chronologically according to the procedures used. The work concludes with the analysis of the objectives that were mainly all the programming: 1) Sala Parpalló as an integrated project; 2) Studies and exhibitions around the Valencian Cultural Imaginary; 3) Analysis of the postmodern crisis; …
¿El Estado de Derecho en peligro? El juez constitucional contra la Constitución y a favor de la reelección presidencial indefinida : caso Bolivia
2021
In Bolivia, the third term and the habilitation of former President Evo Morales to the 2019 presidential elections was allowed with the acquiescence of the Plurinational Constitutional Court. Despite the fact that the Constitution prohibited it and there was a referendum that rejected indefinite presidential re-election. This occurred through the judicialization of politics that produced a non-formal reform of the Constitution producing a case of abusive constitutionalism and the destabilization of the rule of law.
Contra la patologización intensiva en términos de derechos humanos: Activismo gordo en Argentina
2020
This work addresses the way in which Argentine Fat Activism has developed, in recent years, the demand for depathologization of fatness, taking elements from critical discourses on the health of fat people to frame them in a perspective typical of the Human Rights. First, the contemporary fat body is described in terms of stigma and discrimination, especially in the health field. Then, they refer to a series of critical positions on the pathologization and medicalization of fatness from the biomedical perspective, Fat Studies and Fat Activism. Lastly, a series of interventions that the Argentine activist collective Taller Hacer la Vista Gorda produced between 2017 and 2020 were considered, …
Financial Resources of Agricultural Manufacturers in Ukraine – Historical Experience and Its Modern Role in Enterprise Management
2020
The use of historical experience is an important component of the modern economy reforming in Ukraine. The reforms of the second half of the 19th to early 20th century are of particular importance. As their immediate result was the creation of an extensive credit system for agricultural producers, which was very effective at that time. The article describes the main types of financial resources used by agricultural producers in Ukraine at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The analysis of statistical data confirms the idea of the extraordinary vitality of small family-owned agricultural enterprises. In such places there has always been the possibility of replenishing a modest budget thr…
Muzikālo darbu izmantošanas un reproducēšanas tiesiskie aspekti.
2022
Improving Separation of Oil and Water With a Novel Coalescing Centrifugal Pump
2018
Summary A novel centrifugal pump that increases oil-droplet sizes in produced water has been developed. This paper investigates a concept of pumping-pressure optimization, with respect to downstream separation efficiency, for the new pump. The investigation shows that the coalescing centrifugal pump always increased the separation efficiency of a downstream hydrocyclone. Furthermore, it is shown that the pumping pressure can be adjusted to maximize the improvement. Experimental results demonstrate how pumping conditions that minimize the volume fraction of droplets with a diameter smaller than the cut size of the hydrocyclone maximize the separation efficiency. Finally, it is demonstrated h…
Automatic Operation and Control of a Novel Coalescing Centrifugal Pump for Improved Oil/Water Separation
2019
Summary In this paper we present the development and implementation of automatic operation and control for a pump/hydrocyclone produced-water-treatment system to maximize oil/water-separation efficiency. A so-called perturb-and-observe (P&O) algorithm is adapted for a novel centrifugal pump to continuously optimize the point of operation. The novel pump coalesces and increases the size of oil droplets in the produced water, resulting in a unique relationship between the coalescing effect and the point of operation, and allowing for the successful implementation of the P&O algorithm. The algorithm was implemented in two different setups, one measuring the droplet-size distribution be…
Numerical and Experimental Investigation of Equivalence Ratio (ER) and Feedstock Particle Size on Birchwood Gasification
2017
This paper discusses the characteristics of Birchwood gasification using the simulated results of a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. The CFD model is developed and validated with the experimental results obtained with the fixed bed downdraft gasifier available at the University of Agder (UIA), Norway. In this work, several parameters are examined and given importance, such as producer gas yield, syngas composition, lower heating value (LHV), and cold gas efficiency (CGE) of the syngas. The behavior of the parameters mentioned above is examined by varying the biomass particle size. The diameters of the two biomass particles are 11.5 mm and 9.18 mm. All the parameters investigate wit…
