Monialainen yhteistyö asiantuntijuuden muokkaajana kotouttamistyössä : näkökulmana poliisin työ
2020
Kotouttava työ haastaa poliisin ammatillista asiantuntijuutta moninaistuvassa yhteiskunnassa. Multi-agency collaboration is a widely used approach to promote two-way integration in Finland. Besides public authorities, it typically involves various actors from NGOs, ethnic or religious communities, and the private sector. In this article I analyse police offcers’ views and experiences of local multiagency collaborat…
Vocational teachers in the face of major educational reform: Individual ways of negotiating professional identities.
2009
This paper examines how vocational teachers negotiate their professional identity in the context of a major externally imposed curriculum reform. The focus is on the teachers' orientations towards the reform in its initial stage. Sixteen Finnish vocational teachers were interviewed using open-ended narrative interviews. The data were analysed in accordance with data-driven qualitative analysis methods. From the teachers' accounts, three main orientations towards the reform were identified: a resistant orientation, an inconsistent orientation and an approving orientation, each based on the teachers' individual self-positioning towards the reform. Each orientation is illustrated using two nar…
Racial Stratification of Traditional Medicine’s Consumption in South Africa
2018
Introduction: Post-apartheid South Africa remains highly stratified on variable grounds including race. Study Objective: The objective of this review was to ascertain the racial status quo in traditional medicines consumption. Results: Literature shows that the consumption of traditional medicines is saturated within the Black population at 72 percent whilst d…
Managing the repatriation of professionals following overseas assignment
2017
Despite decades of research about culture shock, and latterly but not to the same extent, reverse culture shock, it seems that little is understood about how to manage the process of repatriation after an overseas assignment in the commercial world. Attrition rates of repatriates leaving their employers within the first year following their return continue to rise as those individuals consistently report feeling undervalued by their employers. This study is concerned with how best to manage the process of repatriation from the employees’ point of view. It therefore looks at how a group of repatriating Finns from various professional backgrounds perceived the effects of reverse culture shock…

2019
Diaries of family workers: empowerment and working with families with children
2013
[Introduction] The renewal of the family services and the developing of new kinds of functional structures are seen as a challenge for social policy in Finland. In the past few years there has been an increase in projects and new services with different working methods for supporting families with children. Many projects still concentrate on corrective work although preventive services should be emphasized more. It has been argued that the existing structure of services does not entirely correspond with the service needs of families with children. The reform of the municipal and service structure has made the development of the preventive services and different projects an even more topical…
