Three-Dimensional Superconducting Nanohelices Grown by He+-Focused-Ion-Beam Direct Writing

2019

Novel schemes based on the design of complex three-dimensional (3D) nanoscale architectures are required for the development of the next generation of advanced electronic components. He+ focused-ion-beam (FIB) microscopy in combination with a precursor gas allows one to fabricate 3D nanostructures with an extreme resolution and a considerably higher aspect ratio than FIB-based methods, such as Ga+ FIB-induced deposition, or other additive manufacturing technologies. In this work, we report the fabrication of 3D tungsten carbide nanohelices with on-demand geometries via controlling key deposition parameters. Our results show the smallest and highest-densely packed nanohelix ever fabricated s…

Utilizing Experience Goals in Design of Industrial Systems

2017

The core idea of experience-driven design is to define the intended experience before functionality and technology. This is a radical idea for companies that have built their competences around specific technologies. Although many technology companies are willing to shift their focus towards experience-driven design, reports on real-life cases about the utilization of this design approach are rare. As part of an industry-led research program, we introduced experience-driven design to metal industry companies with experience goals as the key technique. Four design cases in three companies showed that the goals are useful in keeping the focus on user experience, but several challenges are sti…

Heuristics and Memory Strategies Used by Mathematicians

1996

The study of the cognitive processes involved in learning and acquisition of technically complex material is a main focus of interest for basic and applied research. Our research program tries to identh memory aids and heuristic training strategies useful for improving mathematics performance. Part of the effectiveness of a course, designed by taking into account knowledge about the cognitive system, has to do with the development of an adequate relationship with the belief system of the learner. As a first step in that direction, we present a survey of the opinions of a group of mathematicians about the dd€iculty of their subjecr matter, the strategies they use spontaneously to overcome di…

Panel — Assessing Critical Social Theory Research in Information Systems

1997

The Critical Social Theory (CST) program of information systems research is now just over a decade old. Although the number of researchers associated with the CST program are few, they have had a disproportionately larger impact on the field than other research communities. The main reason for this disproportionate impact can be found in the intense and incisive radical critiques of the foundational assumptions of our field that CST researchers have conducted. These radical critiques have helped to open up the theoretical debate on IS research and point out new directions for future inquiry. But as we turn the century, new challenges are emerging. New information technologies (IT) are rapid…

The neorepublican challenge to egalitarian-liberalism: evaluating justifications of redistributive institutions

2019

Neorepublicans like Philip Pettit and Frank Lovett claim that neorepublicanism provides a superior normative research program compared to egalitarian-liberalism. Particularly, they argue that neore...

Risk Management Optimization for Sovereign Debt Restructuring

2015

Abstract Debt restructuring is one of the policy tools available for resolving sovereign debt crises and, while unorthodox, it is not uncommon. We propose a scenario analysis for debt sustainability and integrate it with scenario optimization for risk management in restructuring sovereign debt. The scenario dynamics of debt-to-GDP ratio are used to define a tail risk measure, termed conditional Debt-at-Risk. A multi-period stochastic programming model minimizes the expected cost of debt financing subject to risk limits. It provides an operational model to handle significant aspects of debt restructuring: it collects all debt issues in a common framework, and can include contingent claims, m…

Different sensitivities of whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) and northern pike (Esox lucius) eleutheroembryos to photoinduced toxicity of polycyclic ar…

2011

The photoinduced toxicity of two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), retene (RET) and pyrene (PYR), to the eleutheroembryos of whitefish and northern pike was studied. Fish were exposed to three concentrations of RET and PYR, and irradiated with ultraviolet radiation (UVR) or visible light for 3 h on two consecutive days. UVR covered the absorption maxima of RET and PYR at UVB and UVA, the daily UVR doses were 30 and 28 kJ m−2, respectively. After 72 h, mortality and behavioral abnormalities were observed. Survivors were analyzed for the proteins of CYP1A, CYP3A, Hsp70, and the activity of glutathione reductase (GR). While neither PAHs nor UVR on their own were lethal, simultaneous exp…

A key role for cyclic nucleotide gated (CNG) channels in cGMP-related retinitis pigmentosa.

2011

The rd1 natural mutant is one of the first and probably the most commonly studied mouse model for retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a severe and frequently blinding human retinal degeneration. In several decades of research, the link between the increase in photoreceptor cGMP levels and the extremely rapid cell death gave rise to a number of hypotheses. Here, we provide clear evidence that the presence of cyclic nucleotide gated (CNG) channels in the outer segment membrane is the key to rod photoreceptor loss. In Cngb1(-/-) x rd1 double mutants devoid of regular CNG channels, cGMP levels are still pathologically high, but rod photoreceptor viability and outer segment morphology are greatly improve…

Contributions to the study of returns to education : the Tunisian case

2016

In Tunisia, enrollment rates in tertiary education had soared up over the past two decades. A significant increase of student annual flows imposed the implementation of reforms that led to an increase in the number of higher education institutions and universities. One of the challenges in Tunisia and many African countries is to improve the efficiency of education systems to promote employability and graduates employment. This thesis discuss the question of the efficiency of education from an economic approach based on returns to education in the labor market. The first chapter analyses private returns to education particularly higher education in African countries. Our findings highlight …
