Bari e gli studi catalani

2020

The EU-Ukraine Association Agreement prior to the Vilnius Eastern Partnership Summit

2014

Abstract This paper seeks to explore how the EU policy on Ukraine evolved in the run-up to the Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius in November 2013. In particular, it looks into the preparations leading to the signature of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement. Thereby it contributes to better understanding of the EU policy debate related to the associated negotiations with the Eastern Partnership countries. Prior to the Vilnius Summit there were high expectations that signature of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement would become a key deliverable of the summit. After the EU had postponed the signing of the agreement due to Ukraine’s backsliding in democracy for several times, the process…

Error and Uncertainty Analysis of the Residual Stresses Computed by Using the Hole Drilling Method

2010

:  The hole-drilling method is one of the most used techniques for the experimental analysis of the residual stresses in mechanical components. For both through-thickness uniform and non-uniform residual stress distributions, its application is standardised by the ASTM E837-08. In accordance with the ASTM limitations, the analysis of uniform residual stresses, to which the present work deals with, leads in general to results with a maximum bias of about 10%. Unfortunately, in general the user does not have appropriate procedures to estimate the actual stress error; consequently, if one or more of the experimental influence parameters fall out of the corresponding standard limitations, the c…

Minimum theorems for displacement and plastic strain rate histories in structural elastoplasticity

1975

The finite element method approach is used to obtain formulations of analysis problems relative to elastic-plastic structures when subjected to prescribed programmes of loads, and under the restrictive hypotheses:a) the yielding surfaces are piecewise linearized, andb) the plastic flow-laws are supposed to be of holonomic type within a single “finite” time interval. For mulations are given as linear complementarity problems and quadratic programming problems: one pair of formulations in terms of velocity and plastic multiplier rate histories, and another pair in terms of plastic multiplier rate histories only. The solutions are shown to be characterized by two minimum principles for displac…

Gene Expression and Epigenetic Signatures of Germ Cell-Derived Pluripotent Stem Cells and Embryonic Stem Cells

2012

Germ cell-derived Pluripotent Stem Cells (gPSCs) are pluripotent stem cells that originate from Spermatogonial Stem Cells (SSCs) of the testis. Several reports in the last few years have shown that it is possible to isolate and enrich the SSC population by different approaches and even reprogram these in vivo multipotent cells to gPSCs in vitro. As these cells could be an alternative to circumvent the ethical objections regarding the use of Embryonic Stem Cells (ESCs) for therapeutic approaches, these SSC-derived gPSCs were characterized in several studies comparatively to the gold standard of pluripotency, the ESCs. The results provide great promise that gPSCs can be of importance for pra…

MYC Activates Stem-like Cell Potential in Hepatocarcinoma by a p53-Dependent Mechanism

2014

Activation of c-MYC is an oncogenic hallmark of many cancers including liver cancer, and is associated with a variety of adverse prognostic characteristics. Despite a causative role during malignant transformation and progression in hepatocarcinogenesis, consequences of c-MYC activation for the biology of hepatic cancer stem cells (CSCs) are undefined. Here, distinct levels of c-MYC over-expression were established by using two dose-dependent tetracycline inducible systems in 4 hepatoma cell lines with different p53 mutational status. The CSCs were evaluated using side-population approach as well as standard in vitro and in vivo assays. Functional repression of p53 was achieved by lentivira…

Efficient Reprogramming of Human Fibroblasts and Blood-Derived Endothelial Progenitor Cells Using Nonmodified RNA for Reprogramming and Immune Evasion

2015

mRNA reprogramming results in the generation of genetically stable induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells while avoiding the risks of genomic integration. Previously published mRNA reprogramming protocols have proven to be inconsistent and time-consuming and mainly restricted to fibroblasts, thereby demonstrating the need for a simple but reproducible protocol applicable to various cell types. So far there have been no published reports using mRNA to reprogram any cell type derived from human blood. Nonmodified synthetic mRNAs are immunogenic and activate cellular defense mechanisms, which can lead to cell death and inhibit mRNA translation upon repetitive transfection. Hence, to overcome RNA…

Turing Instability and Pattern Formation for the Lengyel–Epstein System with Nonlinear Diffusion

2014

In this work we study the effect of density dependent nonlinear diffusion on pattern formation in the Lengyel---Epstein system. Via the linear stability analysis we determine both the Turing and the Hopf instability boundaries and we show how nonlinear diffusion intensifies the tendency to pattern formation; in particular, unlike the case of classical linear diffusion, the Turing instability can occur even when diffusion of the inhibitor is significantly slower than activator's one. In the Turing pattern region we perform the WNL multiple scales analysis to derive the equations for the amplitude of the stationary pattern, both in the supercritical and in the subcritical case. Moreover, we c…

Bridging human and machine learning for the needs of collective intelligence development

2020

There are no doubts that artificial and human intelligence enhance and complement each other. They are stronger together as a team of Collective (Collaborative) Intelligence. Both require training for personal development and high performance. However, the approaches to training (human vs. machine learning) are traditionally very different. If one needs efficient hybrid collective intelligence team, e.g. for managing processes within the Industry 4.0, then all the team members have to learn together. In this paper we point out the need for bridging the gap between the human and machine learning, so that some approaches used in machine learning will be useful for humans and vice-versa, some …
