A Framework for Parallel Assessment of Reputation Management Systems

2016

Several distributed applications running over the Internet use Reputation Management Systems (RMSs) to guarantee reliable interactions among unknown agents. Because of the heterogeneity of the existing RMSs, their assessment in terms of correctness and resistance to security attacks is not a trivial task. This work addresses this issue by presenting a novel parallel simulator aimed to support researchers in evaluating the performances of a RMS since the design phase. Preliminary results obtained by simulating two different attacks confirm the suitability of the proposed framework to evaluate different RMSs.

A genetic approach to the maximum common subgraph problem

2019

Finding the maximum common subgraph of a pair of given graphs is a well-known task in theoretical computer science and with considerable practical applications, for example, in the fields of bioinformatics, medicine, chemistry, electronic design and computer vision. This problem is particularly complex and therefore fast heuristics are required to calculate approximate solutions. This article deals with a simple yet effective genetic algorithm that finds quickly a solution, subject to possible geometric constraints.

WikiArt: An Ontology-Based Information Retrieval System for Arts

2009

The paper presents WikiArt, a new system integrating three distinct types of contents about the art: data, information, and knowledge, to generate automatically thematic paths to consult all its contents. WikiArt is a wiki, allowing to manage cooperatively documents about artists, artworks, artistic movements or techniques, and so on. It is also an expert system, provided with an ontology about arts, with which it is able to plan possible different ways of consulting and browsing its contents. This ability is made possible by a second part of the ontology of the system, describing a collection of criteria regarding how to plan thematic paths, and by a set of rules followed by the expert sys…

A Topic Recognition System for Real World Human-Robot Conversations

2013

One of the main features of social robots is the ability to communicate and interact with people as partners in a natural way. However, achieving a good verbal interaction is a hard task due to the errors on speech recognition systems, and due to the understanting the natural language itself. This paper tries to overcome such kind of problems by presenting a system that enables social robots to get involved in conversation by recognizing its topic. Through the use of classical text mining approach, the presented system allows social robots to understand topics of conversation between human partners, enabling the customization of behaviours in their accordance. The system has been evaluated …

A meta-cognitive architecture for planning in uncertain environments

2013

Abstract The behavior of an artificial agent performing in a natural environment is influenced by many different pressures and needs coming from both external world and internal factors, which sometimes drive the agent to reach conflicting goals. At the same time, the interaction between an artificial agent and the environment is deeply affected by uncertainty due to the imprecision in the description of the world, and the unpredictability of the effects of the agent’s actions. Such an agent needs meta-cognition in terms of both self-awareness and control. Self-awareness is related to the internal conditions that may possibly influence the completion of the task, while control is oriented t…

Learning problem solving skills from demonstration: An architectural approach

2011

We present an architectural approach to learning problem solving skills from demonstration, using internal models to represent problem-solving operational knowledge. Internal forward and inverse models are initially learned through active interaction with the environment, and then enhanced and finessed by observing expert teachers. While a single internal model is capable of solving a single goal-oriented task, it is their sequence that enables the system to hierarchically solve more complex task. Activation of models is goal-driven, and internal ”mental” simulations are used to predict and anticipate future rewards and perils and to make decisions accordingly. In this approach intelligent …

A data association approach to detect and organize people in personal photo collections

2011

In this paper we present a method to automatically segment a photo sequence in groups containing the same persons. Many methods in literature accom- plish to this task by adopting clustering techniques. We model the problem as the search for probable associations between faces detected in subsequent photos con- sidering the mutual exclusivity constraint: a person can not be in a photo two times, nor two faces in the same photo can be assigned to the same group. Associations have been found considering face and clothing descriptions. In particular, a two level architecture has been adopted: at the first level, associations are computed within meaningful temporal windows (situations); at the …

Investigating Perceptual Features for a Natural Human - Humanoid Robot Interaction Inside a Spontaneous Setting

2013

The present paper aims to validate our research on human-humanoid interaction (HHI) using the minimalistic humanoid robot Telenoid. We have conducted human-robot interactions test with 100 young people with no prior interaction experience with this robot. The main goal is the analysis of the two social dimension (perception and believability) useful for increasing the natural behavior between users and Telenoid. We administrated our custom questionnaire to these subjects after a well defined experimental setting (ordinary and goal-guided task). After the analysis of the questionnaires, we obtained the proof that perceptual and believability conditions are necessary social dimensions for a s…

WSNs for structural health monitoring of historical buildings

2009

Monitoring structural health of historical heritage buildings may be a daunting task for civil engineers due to the lack of a pre-existing model for the building stability, and to the presence of strict constraints on monitoring device deployment. This paper reports on the experience maturated during a project regarding the design and implementation of an innovative technological framework for monitoring critical structures in Sicily, Italy. The usage of wireless sensor networks allows for a pervasive observation over the sites of interest in order to minimize the potential damages that natural phenomena may cause to architectural or engineering works. Moreover, the system provides real-tim…

Verification of Symbolic Distributed Protocols for Networked Embedded Devices

2020

The availability of versatile and interconnected embedded devices makes it possible to build low-cost networks with a large number of nodes running even complex applications and protocols in a distributed manner. Common tools used for modeling and verification, such as simulators, present some limitations as application correctness is checked off-board and only focuses on source code. Execution in the real network is thus excluded from the early stages of design and verification. In this paper, a system for modeling and verification of symbolic distributed protocols running on embedded devices is introduced. The underlying methodology is rooted in a symbolic programming paradigm that makes …
