In Conclusion: Goethe’s Dream

Kant deemed a theory of life impossible, while Goethe believed that to understand life we should consider it as a whole. The history of Biology is replete with theoretical confrontations, which—dialectically speaking—are usually resolved by their integration in explanatory theories of greater scope. The major confrontation in Biology is between analytic and synthetic conceptions . Kant and Goethe would probably be astounded to see how the analytical conception has helped provide so many details of the cellular world, sufficient to approach the cell as a whole in the way required by the synthetic tradition. I call this “the realisation of Goethe’s dream”.

Understanding the limits of self-control: Positive affect moderates the impact of task switching on consecutive self-control performance

Performing consecutive self-control tasks typically leads to deterioration in self-control performance. This effect can be explained within the strength model of self-control or within a cognitive control perspective. Both theoretical frameworks differ in their predictions with regard to the impact of affect and task characteristics on self-control deterioration within a two-task paradigm. A developmental research project in Norway, Learning Communities in Mathematics (LCM), a collaboration between university and schools, uses mathematical tasks as a basis for developing community in project workshops and for teachers’ design of tasks for classrooms. A person-environment-fit-model for temporary organizations - Antecedents for temporary working settings

Abstract Projectification has led to the widespread use of temporary organizations (TOs) in many industries, but the various factors that determine successful work by employees in TOs are unexplored. We argue that organizations have different degrees of temporariness depending on the following five TO dimensions: temporal duration, nature of the task, team composition, hierarchy, and coordination. Considering the TO dimensions and varying degrees of temporariness, we propose a person-environment (P-E) fit model. The influence of intra-team conflict on work teams' affective climate: A longitudinal study

We analysed whether relationship conflict mediates the link between task conflict and shared affect at the team level of analysis. Moreover, we tested the hypothesis that the relationship between these two types of intra-team conflict would be moderated by team members' interaction. The sample was composed of 156 bank branches. Data were gathered at two points in time. Two affect dimensions (tension and enthusiasm) were measured. The results obtained supported our hypotheses. Uncovering the dark side of innovation: the influence of the number of innovations on work teams’ satisfaction and performance

We investigated whether the number of innovations implemented in work teams is positively related to team task conflict and negative team mood, and whether the latter variables mediate the relationship between the number of innovations implemented and aggregate job satisfaction and team performance. The results obtained in a sample of 89 bank branches, where measures were obtained at three different times, partially supported our hypotheses. Whereas the number of innovations implemented had a positive direct effect on team performance, it had a negative indirect effect on team performance and aggregate job satisfaction, via negative team mood. PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine which communication contexts – virtual or traditional interactions – is more disruptive or beneficial to the effects of intragroup conflicts on team performance.Design/methodology/approachA laboratory experiment was conducted comparing 22 face‐to‐face (FTF) teams, 22 videoconference (VC) teams and 22 computer‐mediated communication (CMC) teams over a month.FindingsResults showed that VC teams are the highest performing teams and CMC teams the lowest.
