Clustering Analysis of Questionnaire for Ph.D. studies in Electrical and Information Engineering in Europe

2013

The ELLEIEC ERASMUS thematic network was running from October 2008 to September 2011. This project deals with several aspects linked to Lifelong Learning in Electrical and Information Engineering in Europe. Within this project, Task 4 is dedicated to “Implementation issues across EIE”. The idea of this task was to see how we can, thanks to implementation using Programs available from the European Commission, and associates (ERASMUS, CD, ERASMUS-MUNDUS, ATLANTIS, IP) to emphasize and develop mobility and cross-recognition. Another aspect, strongly connected, was to analyze the existing and possible interactions of Higher Education Institutions and Lifelong Learning. The European consortium o…

How long does it take to earn a higher education degree in Spain ?

2010

International audience; The purpose of this paper is to identify the main determinants of time-to-degree in higher education. Our results use retrospective data on the full cohort of first-time entering students who embarked on short and long programs from one university in Spain and who were observed over an 8-year period ending in 2004. The descriptive analyses show that less than 40 percent of degree recipients are able to graduate within the minimum period of time. Duration models are estimated for different types of programs. The empirical results show that time-to-completion is extremely sensitive to students' abilities and, to a much lesser extent, to socio-economic background, motiv…

Scripted Collaboration and Group‐Based Variations in a Higher Education CSCL Context

2009

Scripting student activities is one way to make Computer‐Supported Collaborative Learning more efficient. This case study examines how scripting guided student group activities and also how different groups interpreted the script; what kinds of roles students adopted and what kinds of differences there were between the groups in terms of their activities. Seven small groups of higher education students participated in the study. According to the findings, scripting enhanced collaboration and ensured that all groups were able to complete the task, but despite the script the groups' activities varied during the task and the script could not guarantee any “high‐level” participation by all stud…

Parent-child communication as a function of parental education, sex of parent and child and situational factors

1987

Parent-child communication was studied in different contexts (home vs laboratory, variation between and within the tasks, dyad vs triad). The subjects were 48 Finnish families with a four-year-old child. The families were divided into euqual groups of lower and higher parental education. The experiments were carried out in two stages: the first in the laboratory setting and the second in the laboratory setting or at home. The videotaped situations consisted of different cooperative tasks. The first result based on global ratings of dyads and triads (initiation/guidance, cooperation, emotionality) and on evaluation of parents’ teaching styles showed only minor differences in interactional me…

2020

The Internet has become one of the main sources of information for university students’ learning. Since anyone can disseminate content online, however, the Internet is full of irrelevant, biased, or even false information. Thus, students’ ability to use online information in a critical-reflective manner is of crucial importance. In our study, we used a framework for the assessment of students’ critical online reasoning (COR) to measure university students’ ability to critically use information from online sources and to reason on contentious issues based on online information. In addition to analyzing students’ COR by evaluating their open-ended short answers, we also investigated the stude…

Student teams’ development over time: tracing the relationship between the quality of communication and teams’ performance

2016

Current discussions in higher education and alumni training acknowledge the challenges training programs face in responding to the authentic needs of the labor market. In addition to academic knowledge, higher education institutions are expected to provide general twenty-first-century skills, such as problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. To meet these challenges, many institutions utilize collaborative pedagogies such as learning in teams. However, teamwork in higher education tends to focus primarily on the task aspects of performance at the expense of the team aspects, and for educators, there may be no feasible way to assess whether the students are…

MASPEGHI 2004 Mechanisms for Speialization, Generalization and Inheritance

2005

Rapport de Recherche Projet OCL, N° I3S/RR-2004-15-FR; International audience; MASPEGHI 2004 is the third edition of the MASPEGHI workshop. This year the organizers of both the ECOOP 2002 Inheritance Workshop and MASPEGHI 2003 came together to enlarge the scope of the workshop and to address new challenges. We succeeded in gathering a diverse group of researchers and practitioners interested in mechanisms for managing specialization and generalization of programming language components. The workshop contained a series of presentations with discussions as well as group work, and the interplay between the more than 22 highly skilled and inspiring people from many different communities gave ri…

ICDAR 2021 Competition on Historical Document Classification

2021

International audience; This competition investigated the performance of historical document classification. The analysis of historical documents is a difficult challenge commonly solved by trained humanists. We provided three different classification tasks, which can be solved individually or jointly: font group/script type, location, date. The document images are provided by several institutions and are taken from handwritten and printed books as well as from charters. In contrast to previous competitions, all participants relied upon Deep Learning based approaches. Nevertheless, we saw a great performance variety of the different submitted systems. The easiest task seemed to be font grou…

TRIGA-SPEC: the prototype of MATS and LaSpec

2015

Investigation of short-lived nuclei is a challenging task that MATS and LaSpec will handle at the low energy branch of Super-FRS at FAIR. The groundwork for those experiments is laid-out already today at the TRIGA-SPEC facility as a powerful development platform located at the research reactor TRIGA Mainz. The latest status, new developments and first results of commissioning runs are presented here.
