Lattices of Jordan algebras
2010
AbstractCommutative Jordan algebras play a central part in orthogonal models. The generations of these algebras is studied and applied in deriving lattices of such algebras. These lattices constitute the natural framework for deriving new orthogonal models through factor aggregation and disaggregation.
Design of an open-lab activity for engineering students: A case study
2022
Project- or discovery-based learning activities promote curiosity, enjoyment, and interest deriving from the stimulating context in which students operate. Providing a concrete contextualization of laboratory activities could improve student motivation and learning outcomes. In this contribution, a case study related to a workshop on laboratory activities proposed for Engineering Master students is presented, and designed with the aim of developing practical competencies, increasing problem-solving skills, and providing design abilities. Using the facilities available in the Measurements and Control Laboratory, the students, starting from concept knowledge acquired in basic subjects, such …
Experimental Investigation for Local Tank Inflow Model
2014
In the present paper the effect of private roof tanks and of the float valve characteristics on apparent losses due to water meter errors was investigated via an experimental study. The tests were carried out at the Environmental Hydraulic Laboratory of the University of Enna (Italy), on a high-density polyethylene (HDPE 100 PN16) looped distribution network. The experimental results showed that network pressure plays an important role in the characterisation of the floating ball valve emitter law, but the tank operating condition is the most relevant aspect to be considered mainly for water meter error evaluation. The Workers' Value of the Remaining Employment Contract Duration
2005
This paper introduces and applies a method for estimating workers' marginal willingness to pay for job attributes employing data on job search activity. Workers' willingness to pay for the remaining duration of the employment contract is derived. We provide evidence that workers attach substantial value to the remaining contract duration. A temporary worker with a remaining contract of 6 months is willing to pay about 10% of the wage to increase the contract by one month.
Unemployment Determinants for Women in Spain
2000
Spain has one of the highest rates of unemployment among OECD countries. Some explanations for this stress the importance of unemployment duration compared with entry rates to the unemployment pool. Long-term unemployment rates are particularly high among women in Spain. The object of this paper is to investigate the determinants of unemployment duration among women. It will consider personal characteristics (education and age), family background, socio-economic variables (the number of household earners and household income) and the effect of unemployment benefits, using data from the Household Expenditure Survey 1990-91.
Management of Bleeding Complications in Virtual Reality Laparoscopy
2019
The aim of this study was to compare the impact of induced bleeding complication training with regular training on a virtual reality laparoscopic (VRL) simulator. Although bleeding complications occur rarely during laparoscopic surgery, they usually arise without warning and may have severe consequences for the patient because complication management training is not currently widespread. Third-year medical students (n = 41) were randomly selected for 2 curricular courses on how to perform a bimanual task on a VRL simulator. Both the regular training group (RTG) and the induced bleeding complication training (ICT) group performed 2 regular training sessions and 9 training sessions. For the I…
On the generalization of the Boltzmann equation
1974
Starting from the Liouville equation and making use of projection operator techniques we obtain a compact equation for the rate of change of then-particle momentum distribution function to any order in the density. This equation is exact in the thermodynamic limit. The terms up to second order in the density are studied and expressions are given for the errors committed when one makes the usual hypothesis to derive generalized Boltzmann equations. Finally the Choh-Uhlenbeck operator is obtained under additional assumptions.
Analysis of the XENON100 dark matter search data
2014
The XENON100 experiment, situated in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, aims at the direct detection of dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), based on their interactions with xenon nuclei in an ultra low background dual-phase time projection chamber. This paper describes the general methods developed for the analysis of the XENON100 data. These methods have been used in the 100.9 and 224.6 live days science runs from which results on spin-independent elastic, spin-dependent elastic and inelastic WIMP-nucleon cross-sections have already been reported.
