Weekly treatment with irinotecan, folinic acid and infusional 5-fluorouracil (ILF) in patients with advanced gastric cancer.

2003

Although 5-fluorouracil remains the mainstay of treatment for advanced gastric cancer (AGC), no standard chemotherapy regimen exists. Combinations of irinotecan with folinic acid and infusional 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) (ILF) have shown good efficacy with acceptable toxicity in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. At present, only sparse data on ILF are available for AGC. Therefore we conducted a prospective study of this combination in 25 consecutive patients with metastatic gastric cancer. Median age was 63 years, 10 had received prior chemotherapy and 13 presented initially with peritoneal carcinosis. Treatment consisted of irinotecan 80 mg/m2, folinic acid 500 mg/m2 and infusional 5-…

Type A competitiveness traits correlate with downregulation of c-Fos expression in patients with type 1 diabetes.

2019

International audience; AimType A personality has been associated with increased survival in people with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Systemic low-grade inflammation may play a critical role, as suggested in recent reports, although the links between the inflammatory circulating transcriptome and Type A remain unknown. This prompted our exploration of the potential associations between Type A personality and c-Fos gene expression, a candidate gene closely linked to inflammatory processes, in T1D.MethodsType A personality was assessed by Bortner questionnaire in patients with T1D, and two subscales – ‘speed’ and ‘competitiveness’ – were used to measure these specific dimensions of Type A. Expressi…

A pilot study comparing different dose levels and administration schedules of interferon-α2b combined with epirubicin for prevention of recurrence in…

1992

A pilot study in 62 patients has been carried out to evaluate the combination of epirubicin and interferon (IFN)-alpha 2b using different doses and schedules of intravesical administration in the prevention of recurrence of bladder cancer. Preliminary results show greater prophylactic efficacy not only when higher doses of epirubicin and IFN-alpha 2b are used but also when a larger interval between instillation of the compounds was used.

Tumor mutational burden on cytological samples: A pilot study.

2020

Background Immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) represent an important treatment option for patients who have advanced stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Currently, evaluation of the expression level of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) has proven highly successful as a positive predictive biomarker for ICIs. In addition to PD-L1, other promising predictive biomarkers are emerging, including high tumor mutational burden (TMB-H). However, measuring TMB-H remains challenging for several reasons, among which is the difficulty in obtaining adequate tissue material from NSCLC patients. There are no data in the current literature regarding the possibility of adopting cell blocks (CBs) for T…

A pilot study of vinorelbine on a weekly schedule in recurrent and/or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.

1993

Vinorelbine (VNR), 5′-nor-anhydrovinblastine, is a new semi-synthetic vinka alkaloid with selective affinity for mitotic microtubules, which has been shown to be active against several non small cell lung cancer lines in vitro [1]. VNR has been reported to yield a 34.7 % and 20 % overall response rate in patients with squamous cell lung carcinoma and bronchial adenocarcinoma respectively [2]. Moreover, VNR has been shown to be active in advanced breast carcinoma where it may induce a 30–50 % response rate depending on the extent of pretreatment [3]. We tested the activity and toxicity of single agent VNR given on a weekly schedule in a series of patients with recurrent and/or metastatic squ…

Blood flow and oxygenation status of human tumors. Clinical investigations.

1999

There is a large body of evidence suggesting that blood flow and oxygenation of human tumors are important research topics which may explain, in particular, resistance to radiation and to many antineoplastic drugs, which can limit the curability of solid tumors by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. This manuscript reviews the clinical investigations which have been performed regarding blood flow and oxygenation status of human tumors in radiation oncology. The possible uses and limitations of the prognostic significance and the changes under therapy measuring blood flow and oxygenation in human tumors were discussed. In addition, several approaches were summarized, which can improve the microvasc…

Immune checkpoint inhibitors: a milestone in the treatment of melanoma

2016

Summary It has been known for decades that the immune system is able to detect and destroy tumor cells. In the past, this knowledge – mostly acquired through animal experiments – could not be used to benefit our patients, because immuno-oncological therapeutic approaches in humans had constantly failed over recent decades. With the exception of adjuvant interferon therapy, none of these approaches had found its way into everyday clinical practice, and only very few patients were able to enjoy long-term survival associated with good quality of life. With the advent of novel immunological approaches, the meaning of long-term survival as well as quality of life has been redefined for oncologic…

Expression of clec9a in the oral cancer microenvironment. A preliminary immunohistochemical pilot study

2021

Background The search for treatments to improve cancer survival has led to the emergence of immunotherapy and the study of the tumour microenvironment existing in neoplasms. This preliminary study aims to understand the clinical and pathological relationship of clec9a expression in oral cancer and to explore survival models for future studies. Material and methods: Immunohistochemical study that included 26 patients with a diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in mobile tongue and floor of the mouth. Clinical and histopathological variables were recorded, and the biomarkers clec9a for dendritic cells and CD8 and CD4 for lymphocytes were used. Results Clec9a was expressed in 58% o…

Influence of Social Support Received in Online and Offline Contexts on Satisfaction With Social Support and Satisfaction With Life: A Longitudinal St…

2014

People around the globe now regularly interact with family and friends through social network sites (SNSs). In this article, we investigated the differences between social interactions in online and offline contexts as well as users' satisfaction with the social support received in these contexts. It was hypothesized that SNSs are better set up for the task of leveraging informational support but that they are inferior to offline contexts in terms of emotional or instrumental support. We further assumed that users might feel similarly satisfied with how support is rendered online and offline but that only social support transacted in offline contexts would contribute to overall life satisfa…

Online Hate Speech in the European Union : A Discourse-Analytic Perspective

2017

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license and reports on research carried out as part of the European Union co-funded C.O.N.T.A.C.T. project which targeted hate speech and hate crime across a number of EU member states. It showcases the bearing that discourse analytic research can have on our understanding of this phenomenon that is a growing global cause for concern. Although ‘hate speech’ is often incorporated in legal and policy documents, there is no universally accepted definition, which in itself warrants research into how hatred is both expressed and perceived. The research project synthesises discourse analytic and corpus linguistics techniques, and presents its key finding…
