Explaining a Surge in IPR Filings: Uncertain Design Rights and Learning Their Boundaries in the Finnish Sauna Heater Market

2017

We present a case study of a surge in design right filings in an industry transforming from technology-based to design-based competition. The motives for and outcomes of filing, and how these changed over time are discussed. We go on to explore the events, which offered the agents opportunities to update their beliefs about the scope of design right protection. We find that filing motives change from specific protection goals to freedom to operate over time. We also find that the actors faced several, but sometimes contradictory, learning opportunities. Finally, we argue that uncertain design rights may have fostered entrepreneurial optimism. Policy makers could level the playing field and …

Distributed Scrum when Turning into Maintenance : A Single Case Study

2015

Global software development using agile methods is commonplace in software industry nowadays. Scrum, as the agile development management framework, can be distributed in many ways, especially concerning how the key roles are presented in different sites. We describe here a single case study of a distributed Scrum, mainly for maintenance of the already constructed web portal. Using a qualitative method, both working well and challenging parts of the software work, as experienced by the project stakeholders, are revealed and discussed.

How to find information on national food and nutrient consumption surveys across Europe: systematic literature review and questionnaires to selected …

2009

The present research was conducted within the framework of the EURopean micronutrient RECommendations Aligned project. In order to identify the best practice in assessing nutrient intakes, a search strategy for collecting data from national food consumption surveys/studies in Europe was developed. Systematic literature searches were carried out on twenty-eight European and the four European Free Trade Association countries. A questionnaire was also sent to two to five experts in each country. Systematic reviews using PubMed yielded 12 703 abstracts that were reduced to 200 studies using inclusion and exclusion criteria. Similarly, a search of ministry web sites yielded 3033 hits, and subseq…

First Life Cycle Impact Considerations of Two Wave Energy Converters

2018

The work presents two different revolutionary devices for the utilization of a new entry of renewable energy sources: sea wave. The first technology is based on linear generators, able to directly converts a linear motion into electrical output, limiting to minimum the chain of energy conversion. The other solution is based on a mechanical motion converter, coupled with alternators. The scope of this paper is to compare the two different systems designed by University of Palermo, through Life Cycle Assessment, in order to evaluate the global effects of the two systems to the environment.

Influence on self-efficacy of the degree of authenticity of the inquiry carried out in two secondary school science projects

2021

*-Representations of Partial *-Algebras

2002

This chapter is devoted to *-representations of partial *-algebras. We introduce in Section 7.1 the notions of closed, fully closed, self-adjoint and integrable *-representations. In Section 7.2, the intertwining spaces of two *-representations of a partial *-algebra are defined and investigated, and using them we define the induced extensions of a *-representation. Section 7.3 deals with vector representations for a *-representation of a partial *-algebra, which are the appropriate generalization to a *-representation of the notion of generalized vectors described in Chapter 5. Regular and singular vector representations are defined and characterized by the properties of the commutant, and…

Finnish Cyber Security Strategy and Implementation

2015

Technical and automated solutions and information networks, which make planning, guidance and implementation possible fast and in a cost-efficient way, are widely used in Finnish information society. The flipside of this development is increased dependency on extensive and complicated technical systems and information networks. Failures in these systems or, for example, in their power supply may rapidly affect comprehensive security in society. Threats against security in society have become more multifaceted and, as a consequence, more complicated. Threats can no longer be divided clearly into military and non-military threats or internal and external threats; they are often interconnected…

Reliability and validity of the Home Care STAT (Safety Task Assessment Tool).

2013

Abstract Home care workers are a priority population for ergonomic assessment and intervention, but research on caregivers' exposures to hazards is limited. The current project evaluated the reliability and validity of an ergonomic self-assessment tool called Home Care STAT (Safety Task Assessment Tool). Participants (N = 23) completed a background survey followed by 10–14 days of self-monitoring with the STAT. Results showed that the most frequent task was house cleaning, and that participants regularly performed dangerous manual client moving and transferring tasks. Researcher in-home observations of 14 workers (duration ≤2 h) demonstrated that workers' self-assessments were moderately re…
