Analysis of sterols by high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry combined with chemometrics
2006
A newly developed high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS) method has been successfully used to analyze plasma concentrations of various phytosterols (cholestanol and beta-sitosterol) and cholesterol metabolites (desmosterol and lathosterol). This was based on an unusual solvent combination of water/methanol vs. methanol/acetone/n-hexane applied on a Purospher Star RP-18e (125 x 2 mm, 3 microm) column, which proved excellent for the separation, identification and quantification of plasma sterols. Simple solid-phase extraction preparation of plasma samples was performed, followed by the developed fast and robust HPLC separation. Results on four groups of people were…
Designing Performance Management Systems in Academic Institutions: a Dynamic Performance Management View
2013
This paper illustrates how to design and implement performance management systems in universities by identifying and modeling those factors impacting on academic performance through a dynamic performance management view. Particularly, combining performance management with System Dynamics modeling may allow academic decision-makers to better identify key-performance drivers for pursuing a sustainable performance improvement in universities. In the second section of the paper, a number of examples based on empirical findings from a field project aimed at designing a dynamic performance management model for the University of Palermo are discussed.

Using Project Finance to Fund Long-term Investments in the Energy Industry.
2013
Project finance has emerged as a leading way to finance large projects in energy industry. The basic characteristic of project finance is that lenders loan money for the development of a project solely based on the specific project’s risks and future cash flows. This highlights a key feature of project finance due to the capacity to generate cash flows to ensure the repayment of loans and adequate returns on equity capital. A revenue stream from the project large enough is a prerequisite for project financing. The paper aims to assess the drivers of credit risk in project finance. Credit risk is one of the risks to which the project lenders are exposed. In particular, the proposed paper aim…

Responsibility in uncertain times: an institutional perspective on precaution
2008
Precaution is a key issue in environmental governance. Variously defined, intensively debated and introduced in many regulations, its meaning, scope and application remain problematic. This article argues that the controversy on precaution is a matter of culturally patterned expectations concerning the production and use of knowledge and the related social positions and responsibilities. The way uncertainty and its role in the policy process are understood is crucial. For some precaution is a flawed concept, to be accommodated to the current expert-based cooperative scheme. For others it is a major innovation requiring a rearrangement of the latter. Precautionary policies may evolve in dif…

Una dama dell'architettura a Palermo
2020
