Design of Asymmetric Shift Operators for Efficient Decentralized Subspace Projection
2021
A large number of applications in decentralized signal processing includes projecting a vector of noisy observations onto a subspace dictated by prior information about the field being monitored. Accomplishing such a task in a centralized fashion in networks is prone to a number of issues such as large power consumption, congestion at certain nodes and suffers from robustness issues against possible node failures. Decentralized subspace projection is an alternative method to address those issues. Recently, it has been shown that graph filters (GFs) can be implemented to perform decentralized subspace projection. However, most of the existing methods have focused on designing GFs for symmetr…
Phase error analysis of clipped waveforms in surface topography measurement using projected fringes
2021
Abstract When working with the method of projected fringes outside the optical laboratory one often encounters the problem of uncontrollable ambient light. This might cause saturation of the camera which in turn results in clipping of the fringes. Since standard theories describing phase-shifting techniques assume the projected fringes to be purely sinusoidal, such clipping will result in measurement error. In this paper a detailed analysis of this problem is given, and relations between phase errors, the amount of fringe clipping and the number of phase steps are found. Moreover, the phase difference between the clipped and the unclipped fringes is described. This investigation is based on…
BioLab: An Educational Tool for Signal Processing Training in Biomedical Engineering
2007
This paper introduces and evaluates BioLab, a tool for teaching biosignal processing. BioLab has been used in the biomedical engineering module that is given in the second semester of the fifth year of the electronic engineering degree at the University of Valencia, Spain. This module and its correspondent curricular pathway are also reviewed. BioLab allows the results obtained with digital processing techniques to be shown interactively in the theory classes, and it also provides support in laboratory sessions. The graphic interface of BioLab simplifies its learning and use and provides access to processing and visualization functions by means of menus. The tool is based on Matlab since th…
Search for Isovector Valence-Shell Excitations in 140 Nd and 142 Sm via Coulomb excitation reactions of radioactive ion beams
2018
Projectile Coulomb excitation experiments were performed at HIE-ISOLDE at CERN with the radioactive ion beams of 140Nd and 142Sm. Ions with an energy of 4:62 MeV/A were impinging on a 1.45 mg/cm2 thick 208Pb target. The γ-rays depopulating the Coulomb-excited states were recorded by the HPGe-array MINIBALL and scattered particles were detected by a double-sided silicon strip detector. Experimental intensities were used for the determination of electromagnetic transition matrix elements. A preliminary result of the B(M1; 2+3 → 2+1) of 140Nd and an upper limit for the case of 142Sm are revealing the main fragments of the proton-neutron mixed-symmetry 2+1;ms states.
Contrasting Automatic and Manual Group Formation: A Case Study in a Software Engineering Postgraduate Course
2021
This paper proposes the comparison of a group formation approach based on an evolutionary algorithm with a manual approach performed by an instructor with ten years of experience on this task. The groups were created based on the professional, psychological, and experience profile of each student. The results obtained demonstrated the algorithm’s potential, reaching an average similarity of \(83.46\%\) with the groups formed manually by the instructor.
Experiencing the Smart City Concept: the Challenge of Intelligent District
2016

Selecting between Competitors in Multiplication Tasks: An Explanation of the Errors Produced by Adolescents with Learning Difficulties
1997
Two experiments were conducted in order to determine the nature of the difficulties encountered by learning disabled (LD) adolescents in the resolution of multiplication problems ( a b, where a and b vary between 2 and 9). A response production task (Experiment 1) revealed that the incorrect responses generally belonged to the table of one of the two operands, and that the order of difficulty of the problems was the same for the LDs as for normal children, adolescents, and educated adults as reported in the literature. This result suggests that the difficulties are not solely due to memory problems. Experiment 2 tested the hypothesis that these difficulties were caused by a problem in inhi…
