2021

Employees in female-dominated sectors are exposed to high workloads, emotional job demands, and role ambiguity, and often have insufficient resources to deal with these demands. This imbalance causes strain, threatening employees’ work ability. The aim of this study was to examine whether resource-providing leadership at the workplace level buffers against the negative repercussions of these job demands on work ability. Employees (N = 2383) from 290 work groups across three countries (Germany, Finland, and Sweden) in female-dominated sectors were asked to complete questionnaires in this study. Employees rated their immediate supervisor’s resource-providing leadership and also self-reported …

A Review of Early Numeracy Interventions for Children at Risk in Mathematics

2015

This study reviewed early numeracy interventions for four- to seven-year-old children at risk for mathematics difficulties. The search yielded 19 peer-reviewed studies with pre- and post-treatment control designs. The interventions were categorised as either core or supplemental instruction. The study analysed the effectiveness and identified the pedagogical components of the interventions: setting, duration, numeracy content used for intervention training and progress measurement, conductor and professional developmental support offered, and instructional design features. The interventions showed, to various degrees, the promising effect of improving the early numeracy skills of at-risk ch…

Registration of moving surfaces by means of one-shot laser projection

2005

The acquisition of three-dimensional models of a given surface is a very interesting subject in computer vision. Most of techniques are based on the use of laser range finders coupled to a mechanical system that scans the surface. These techniques lacks of accuracy in the presence of vibrations or non-controlled surface motion because of the misalignments between the acquired images. In this paper, we propose a new one-shot pattern which benefits from the use of registration techniques to recover a whole surface in the presence of non-controlled motion.

Space partitioning of exchange-correlation functionals with the projector augmented-wave method

2018

We implement a Becke fuzzy cells type space partitioning scheme for the purposes of exchange-correlation within the GPAW projector augmented-wave method based density functional theory code. Space partitioning is needed in the situation where one needs to treat different parts of a combined system with different exchange-correlation functionals. For example, bulk and surface regions of a system could be treated with functionals that are specifically designed to capture the distinct physics of those regions. Here, we use the space partitioning scheme to implement the quasi-nonuniform exchange-correlation scheme, which is a useful practical approach for calculating metallic alloys on the gene…

A comparison of direct and indirect methods for measuring leaf and surface areas of individual bushes

1995

Indirect estimates of leaf area from measurements with three commercially available instruments (DEMON, LAI-2000 and Sunfleck Ceptometer) were compared with directly measured areas of individual Retama sphaerocarpa bushes. The three indirect methods gave good estimates of the total surface area of individual bushes. For the DEMON, the method of log-linear averaging of transmitted radiation gave estimates closer to directly measured surface area than the method of averaging transmission linearly. For the LAI-2000, estimated surface area index multiplied by canopy projected area gave the best agreement with directly measured values. For measurements with the Sunfleck Ceptometer, values of sur…

Determination of the object surface function by structured light: application to the study of spinal deformities.

1999

The projection of structured light is a technique frequently used to determine the surface shape of an object. In this paper, a new procedure is described that efficiently resolves the correspondence between the knots of the projected grid and those obtained on the object when the projection is made. The method is based on the use of three images of the projected grid. In two of them the grid is projected over a flat surface placed, respectively, before and behind the object; both images are used for calibration. In the third image the grid is projected over the object. It is not reliant on accurate determination of the camera and projector pair relative to the grid and object. Once the met…

On the arithmetic of a family of degree-two K3 surfaces

2018

Let $\mathbb{P}$ denote the weighted projective space with weights $(1,1,1,3)$ over the rationals, with coordinates $x,y,z,$ and $w$; let $\mathcal{X}$ be the generic element of the family of surfaces in $\mathbb{P}$ given by \begin{equation*} X\colon w^2=x^6+y^6+z^6+tx^2y^2z^2. \end{equation*} The surface $\mathcal{X}$ is a K3 surface over the function field $\mathbb{Q}(t)$. In this paper, we explicitly compute the geometric Picard lattice of $\mathcal{X}$, together with its Galois module structure, as well as derive more results on the arithmetic of $\mathcal{X}$ and other elements of the family $X$.

Contour/Outline/Silhouette

2020

The contour is the locus at which the parts of opaque solid objects appear to form an edge because it corresponds for the viewer to the projection of the rim, namely the curve that divides the surfaces into visible and invisible parts. The rim between the visible front and the invisible rear side is projected onto the contour that is the envelope of all the curves of equal depth. Although the rim and the contour run into depth, they are distinct concepts that regard the object-centred and the viewer-centred description. The outline is the boundary of the surface delimited by the contour, which fills a spatial region. Rubin (1921) discovered the property that allows the contour and the outli…

On stability of generic subriemannian caustic in the three-space

2000

Abstract The singularities of exponential mappings in subriemannian geometry are interesting objects, that are already non-trivial at the local level, contrarily to their Riemannian analogs. The simplest case is the three-dimensional contact case. Here we show that the corresponding generic caustics have moduli at the origin, and the first module that occurs has a simple geometric interpretation. On the contrary, we prove a stability result of the “big wave front”, that is, of the graph of the multivalued arclength function, reparametrized in a certain way. This object is a three-dimensional surface, which has also the natural structure of a wave front. The projection on the three-dimension…
