JSSPrediction: a Framework to Predict Protein Secondary Structures Using Integration

2006

Identifying protein secondary structures is a difficult task. Recently, a lot of software tools for protein secondary structure prediction have been produced and made available on-line, mostly with good performances. However, prediction tools work correctly for families of proteins, such that users have to know which predictor to use for a given unknown protein. We propose a framework to improve secondary structure prediction by integrating results obtained from a set of available predictors. Our contribution consists in the definition of a two phase approach: (i) select a set of predictors which have good performances with the unknown protein family, and (ii) integrate the prediction resul…

Web 2.0 and the collective intelligence

2008

In this paper, I describe a new form of collective intelligence (CI) on the Internet. It is project-like self-organization of masses of ordinary people on the Internet. These crowds emerge, define the collective problem or task by themselves, solve it, and vanish as entities. I have coined this phenomena to netcrowd ('verkkovoima' in Finnish). I compare netcrowd to other forms of CI and suggest a typology for CI types.

Crowdsourcing Fundamentals: Definition and Typology

2015

Crowdsourcing is a problem-solving and task realization model that is being increasingly used. Thanks to the possibility of harnessing the collective intelligence from the Internet; thanks to the crowdsourcing initiatives people can, for example, find a solution to a complex chemical problem, get images tagged, or get a logo designed. Due to its success and usefulness, more and more researchers have focused their interest on this concept. This fact has shown that the concept of crowdsourcing has no clear boundaries, and although over time the concept has been better explained, some authors describe it differently, propose different types of crowdsourcing initiatives, or even use contradicto…

Resistance to change: a literature review and empirical study

2003

This paper examines organizational change, focusing on the distinction of changes according to their scope and presenting a typology of evolutionary and strategic changes. It also offers an in‐depth study of resistance to change. Through empirical research, the paper analyzes the importance of the sources of resistance to change defined theoretically, and considers both types of changes. The article shows which sources of resistance differ most, according to the scope of change, offering hints about where organizations should pay special attention when initiating a change process.

Utilizing digital tools to support face-to-face care : Examining uptake within the practices of Australian psychologist

2020

Societal adoption of mobile phones and other digital devices, and the resulting widespread digital literacy, allows for new possibilities in approaching and supporting faceto-face therapy. In this study, we examined the application of digital communication tools and media within therapeutic care by 33 psychologists across Australia. Uses of digital technologies were analyzed with a focus on both the approaches applied within face-to-face therapy sessions and those occurring as an adjunct to these sessions. In contrast to online counseling, established upon a foundation of digital technologies, the study results indicate that the use of technology in face-to-face therapy is still emerging bu…

Washback factors and inference predictors in the Spanish University Examination: The OPENPAU Project (FFI2011-22442)

2012

Background: University Entrance Examinations provide information the student?s opportunities to succeed in their academic university career. However, the current foreign language paper of the Spanish University Entrance Examination does no permit to obtain enough evidence to make academic inferences. Purpose of Study: The purpose of this study was to determine if the new test would serve for these objectives according to the students? needs and expected use of the language. Sources of Evidence: Based on Chapelle (2007) and García Laborda (2010). Analysis and results: Primary findings indicate that the test requires a deep revision in the test items, task typology and, overall, the test defi…

Identifying the Optimum Social Site that Could Serve eLearning Purposes: A Preliminary Analysis

2020

Nowadays, an increasingly attractive research domain is represented by the integration of eLearning systems with the Social Media tools. However, identifying the proper Social Media platform to serve educational purposes could be an extremely hard task, mainly due to the variations from platform to platform. Thus, the first aim of this article is to identify the optimum typology that could be successfully integrated with eLearning systems. Moving forward, a classification of the top 20 most popular Social Media sites at global level in terms of their main objectives will be required in order to asses a specific typology of each of this. Thereafter, we propose a preliminary model of comparis…

The role of utility models in patent filing strategies: evidence from European countries

2018

We examine the role of utility models (UM) in patent filing strategies. With an extensive patent family data from European countries, we explore the structures and characteristics of patent families, which include UMs. A simple typology of patent families with UM members is introduced. We document that the geographical scope of most patent families with UM members is purely national, which is in line with the conventional view that the UM mechanism covers technologically and economically marginal inventions. However, the image of a UM as a signal of a minor invention is an oversimplification. Applicants exhibit a mixture of uses for the UM and there exists a subset of UM filings linked to i…

Estudios previos y propuesta de intervención en las pinturas murales, esculturas y ornamentos de la Real Parroquia de los Santos Juanes de Valencia

2020

Throughout this article, the most representative aspects of the previous studies and the intervention proposal, carried out for the restoration of the paintings, sculptures and ornaments of the Royal Parish of the Santos Juanes in Valencia, are exposed. A project of this magnitude involves the effort and dedication of a great team, resulting in one-year work with exhaustive and constant research with the purpose of safeguarding the heritage assets of the church. With this article we want to make known the importance that these previous studies acquire. Been essential since they are the starting point and the basis for the execution of the restoration works that will be carried out during fo…

The Effect of Music on Movement Perception: Synchresis in Hits for HIIT

2021

Hits for HIIT consists in a research-creation project aiming to produce both musical pieces and training exercises for, on the one hand, optimizing HIIT practice and, on the other, enriching scholarly research on the relations between music and sports. These questions and their related studies have highlighted music/movement relations and the way they are perceived. In this paper we would like to outline how we attempt to build a two-way dialogue between the production of music adapted to HIIT and the design of workouts based on the music.
