Development of Planning in Relation to Age, Attention, Simultaneous and Successive Processing
1994
This study investigated the development of planning and its relationship with age and other cognitive processes taken from the PASS model. Ninety-nine students in grades two, four, and eleven were administered planning, simultaneous processing, successive processing, and attention tasks. MANOVA with grade level and gender as independent variables revealed that grade level had a significant effect on planning, whereas gender did not. All but one planning variable showed a significant main effect of grade in subsequent ANOVAs. Pair-wise comparisons between grade levels indicated that the developmental trajectories were not uniform in different tasks. Regression analyses indicated that the co…
The ACM property for unions of lines in P1×P2
2021
This paper examines the Arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) property for certain codimension 2 varieties in P1×P2 called sets of lines in P1×P2 (not necessarily reduced). We discuss some obstacles to finding a general characterization. We then consider certain classes of such curves, and we address two questions. First, when are they themselves ACM? Second, in a non-ACM reduced configuration, is it possible to replace one component of a primary (prime) decomposition by a suitable power (i.e. to “fatten” one line) to make the resulting scheme ACM? Finally, for our classes of such curves, we characterize the locally Cohen-Macaulay property in combinatorial terms by introducing the definition …
Intra-visual conflict in visually induced motion sickness
2011
Abstract Motion sickness (MS) can be a debilitating side-effect not just of sea travel, but also when immersed in video games or virtual environments (visually induced MS). To explore the impact of visual display parameters on motion sickness, we presented footage taken on an automobile race track to different groups of observers during three experiments. In Experiment 1, one group watched the movie wearing a head-mounted display (HMD) and a second group looked at a large projection screen with unrestricted view. Resolution and visual angle were equated. In contrast to common assumption, the projection screen produced significantly higher motion sickness scores than the HMD. To understand t…
Conceptualisation et évaluation d'une typologie de lotissement vertical pour un aménagement urbain durable
2020
The current urban development process is the result of a paradoxical situation. On the one end, families prefer individual housing, which finds the favourable conditions to its spreading in the more or less distant from towns outskirts, while wishing to benefit from services (proximity to amenities, public transport offers, etc…) which are rather the corelate of dense urban centralization. On the other hand, in order to fight against environmental, social and economic costs of urban sprawl, and also aim towards a more sustainable city, the urban renovation and compact city projects lead to some density levels that only collective housing enables to reach. So, the equation - control of the u…
Interaction features for prediction of perceptual segmentation:Effects of musicianship and experimental task
2016
As music unfolds in time, structure is recognised and understood by listeners, regardless of their level of musical expertise. A number of studies have found spectral and tonal changes to quite successfully model boundaries between structural sections. However, the effects of musical expertise and experimental task on computational modelling of structure are not yet well understood. These issues need to be addressed to better understand how listeners perceive the structure of music and to improve automatic segmentation algorithms. In this study, computational prediction of segmentation by listeners was investigated for six musical stimuli via a real-time task and an annotation (non real-tim…
Proportions in Salvatore Caronia Roberti Between Theory and Practice
2022
AbstractIn 1949 Salvatore Caronia Roberti published the volume Introduzione allo studio della composizione architettonica. It is a compendium of his own studies and research came together in his architecture, testifying to the close interweaving of theory and practice. Caronia Roberti was a student of Ernesto Basile, one of the leading exponents of Art Nouveau, a style in which proportions played a marginal place. He later broke away from the Master’s school to attempt a new path in which geometry and proportion constitute the core of his theoretical research. This study aims to highlights the organic nature of Caronia Roberti’s thought, between architectural history and representation, by …
Projective Architecture
2009
Michele Sbacchi investigates the real influence of the notion of projection on architectural design before and during the age of Guarini. He takes into consideration concepts such as light and shadow, abstract line, plane, section, projective geometry and perspective. To do this he looks at the ideas of Gregorius Saint Vincent, Alberti, Guarini, Desargues and de l’Orme, among others.
Redefining Creativity - Analyzing Definitions, Collocations, and Consequences
2010
How holistically is human creativity defined, investigated, and understood? Until recently, most scientific research on creativity has focused on its positive side. However, creativity might not only be a desirable resource but also be a potential threat. In order to redefine creativity we need to analyze and understand definitions, collocations, and consequences of creativity. In this paper, we reviewed 42 explicit definitions and 120 collocations. The thematic analysis of our data reveals that the vast majority of creativity definitions do not emphasize the positive/negative aspects of the concept. Neither are the negative aspects of creativity emphasized in its numerous collocations. Thu…
Task-based visual analytics for interactive multiobjective optimization
2020
We study how visual interaction techniques considered in visual analytics can be utilized when implementing interactive multiobjective optimization methods, where a decision maker iteratively participates in the solution process. We want to benefit from previous research and avoid re-inventing ideas. Our aim is to widen awareness and increase the applicability of interactive methods for solving real-world problems. As a concrete approach, we introduce seven high-level tasks that are relevant for interactive methods. These high-level tasks are based on low-level tasks proposed in the visual analytics literature. In addition, we give an example on how the high-level tasks can be implemented a…
Multivariate EEG spectral analysis evidences the functional link between motor and visual cortex during integrative sensorimotor tasks
2012
The identification of the networks connecting brain areas and the understanding of their role in executing complex tasks is a crucial issue in cognitive neuroscience. In this study, specific visuomotor tasks were devised to reveal the functional network underlying the cooperation process between visual and motor regions. Electroencephalography (EEG) data were recorded from twelve healthy subjects during a combined visuomotor task, which integrated precise grip motor commands with sensory visual feedback (VM). This condition was compared with control tasks involving pure motor action (M), pure visual perception (V) and visuomotor performance without feedback (V + M). Multivariate parametric …
