Antiviral capacity of sanitizers against infectious viruses in process water from the produce industry under batch and continuous conditions
2023
The presence of human enteric viruses in produce has extensively been reported. However, the significance of the quality of process water (PW) used by the produce industry and the viral inactivation capacity of water disinfection agents used to maintain the microbiological quality of PW has received limited attention. This study evaluates the antiviral disinfection efficacy of chlorine, chlorine dioxide (ClO2) and peracetic acid (PAA) at recommended operational limits in PW using hepatitis A virus (HAV), the cultivable norovirus surrogate, murine norovirus (MNV-1), and MS2 coliphages. Defined commodity representative crops (baby leaves, bell peppers, and the vegetable mix of tomatoes, cucum…
Biological control of Listeria monocytogenes in soil model systems by Enterococcus mundtii strains expressing mundticin KS production
2022
Abstract The agricultural practices applied in pre-harvest greatly influence the presence and the levels of microorganisms in fresh produce. Among these, Listeria monocytogenes represents one of the most lethal foodborne pathogens associated with vegetables. The main hypothesis of this work is that bacteriocin producer Enterococcus mundtii strains can be effective against L. monocytogenes in soil. To this purpose, bacteriocin production by E. mundtii WFE3, WFE20 and WFE31, three strains showing a strong bacteriocin activity in terms of inhibitory power and inhibition spectra, was evaluated in sterile extracts from agricultural soil and peat moss, in organic nutrient solution (ONS) and miner…

Promoting innovation and entrepreneurship skills in professionals in software engineering training: An approach to the academy and bodies of knowledg…
2018
Bodies of Knowledge (BOK) contain the most relevant knowledge for a discipline. BOK must embody the consensus reached by the community for which a specific BOK will be applied. This consensus is a prerequisite for the adoption of the BOK by the community. In this context, at the level of higher education, especially in the field of software engineering, the academic world shows a significant enthusiasm for the development of various competencies related to entrepreneurship and innovation, focusing on both the promotion of opportunities and the strengthening of existing connections between university and software industry. The reality is that one of the main challenges in software engineerin…
Ethical Entrepreneurship Training. Theoretical Reflection and Case Analysis
2014
Abstract In this paper we first reflect on the theoretical foundation of ethical entrepreneurship training in the field of economy. In this sense, we try to establish briefly the theoretical and historical assumptions of ethical entrepreneurship, especially from a review of the work of Adam Smith, professor of Moral Philosophy and central figure in the birth of the modern economy. We then present a definition of entrepreneurial activity, which is closely linked to a social and ethical dimension of economy and to the internal goods of economic activity. On the basis of these considerations, we propose some objectives of training for ethical entrepreneurship. Finally, we present a case study …
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY IN THE MEDITERRANEAN DESTINATIONS: A LATENT CLASS SEGMENTATION ANALYSIS
2016
This article addresses a cross-destination research to study a key issue for the growth and competitiveness of the tourism sector, which is the perceived environmental sustainability of a destination. Particularly, a segmentation analysis is developed to examine potential unobserved heterogeneity across tourists regarding their perception of environmental sustainability of the destination. 918 tourists of five Mediterranean Sea Basin cities are studied using a latent class segmentation technique. Results show the existence of three differentiated latent clusters of tourists with low, medium and high perception of environmental sustainability respectively, confirming the validity of this var…
Molecular and Cellular Aspects of Chemical Carcinogenesis

Different DNA-adducts produced by one given genotoxic agent can lead to different mutational preferences, as exemplified in this mini-review, by the cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II)-induced d(GpG)-N7(1)-N7(2) adduct, giving rise predominantly to G→T transversions targeted to the 5′-modified G, the d(ApG)-N7(l)-N7(2) adduct to A→T transversions, while for the d(GpTpA)-N7(l)-N7(3) adduct no crosslink-specific mutations were observed. Expression of mutated Hras put under the control of cell-compartment specific promoters in different layers of the mouse skin showed that the consequent expression of the malignant phenotype depended on the degree of differentiation of the cell, progression to ca…
Genome-wide promoter methylation analysis in neuroblastoma identifies prognostic methylation biomarkers.
2012
Background: Accurate outcome prediction in neuroblastoma, which is necessary to enable the optimal choice of risk-related therapy, remains a challenge. To improve neuroblastoma patient stratification, this study aimed to identify prognostic tumor DNA methylation biomarkers. Results: To identify genes silenced by promoter methylation, we first applied two independent genome-wide methylation screening methodologies to eight neuroblastoma cell lines. Specifically, we used re-expression profiling upon 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine (DAC) treatment and massively parallel sequencing after capturing with a methyl-CpG-binding domain (MBD-seq). Putative methylation markers were selected from DAC-upregulated …
Distribution of chlorpromazine in a simplified blood influenced by various drugs
1973
The binding of chlorpromazine to erythrocytes and to albumin as influenced by other drugs was studied in a simplified blood (31.5±0.3% bovine erythrocytes, 4 g-% bovine serum albumin in 0.02 M phosphate buffer solution containing 0.15 M NaCl). the total concentration of chlorpromazine in the simplified blood was 10−4 M, the concentration of the displacing drugs was 10−3 M. After an incubation period of 3 h at 22° C the chlorpromazine concentration was determined in the albumin solution after centrifugation of the blood at 3000×g and in the aqueous phase after ultracentrifugation at 150000×g. Under control conditions 68.1±0.9% of chlorpromazine was bound to the erythrocytes, 28.5±0.9% was bo…
