Location-Free Spectrum Cartography
2019
Spectrum cartography constructs maps of metrics such as channel gain or received signal power across a geographic area of interest using spatially distributed sensor measurements. Applications of these maps include network planning, interference coordination, power control, localization, and cognitive radios to name a few. Since existing spectrum cartography techniques require accurate estimates of the sensor locations, their performance is drastically impaired by multipath affecting the positioning pilot signals, as occurs in indoor or dense urban scenarios. To overcome such a limitation, this paper introduces a novel paradigm for spectrum cartography, where estimation of spectral maps rel…
Deep Completion Autoencoders for Radio Map Estimation
2022
Radio maps provide metrics such as power spectral density for every location in a geographic area and find numerous applications such as UAV communications, interference control, spectrum management, resource allocation, and network planning to name a few. Radio maps are constructed from measurements collected by spectrum sensors distributed across space. Since radio maps are complicated functions of the spatial coordinates due to the nature of electromagnetic wave propagation, model-free approaches are strongly motivated. Nevertheless, all existing schemes for radio occupancy map estimation rely on interpolation algorithms unable to learn from experience. In contrast, this paper proposes a…
Asymptotic properties of incoherent waves propagating in an all-optical regenerators line
2007
International audience; We present an original method to generate optical pulse trains with random time-interval values from incoherent broadband sources. More precisely, our technique relies on the remarkable properties of a line made of cascaded self-phase modulation-based optical regenerators. Depending on the regenerator parameters, various regimes with noticeably different physical behaviors can be reported.
Nonparametric statistics for DOA estimation in the presence of multipath
2002
This paper is concerned with array signal processing in nonGaussian noise and in the presence of multipath. Robust and fully nonparametric high resolution algorithms for direction of arrival (DOA) estimation are presented. The algorithms are based on multivariate spatial sign and rank concepts. Spatial smoothing of the multivariate rank and sign based covariance matrices is employed as a preprocessing step in order to deal with coherent sources. The performance of the algorithms is studied using simulations. The results show that almost optimal performance is obtained in wide variety of different noise conditions.
Towards an analytical framework for tailoring supercontinuum generation.
2016
A fully analytical toolbox for supercontinuum generation relying on scenarios without pulse splitting is presented. Furthermore, starting from the new insights provided by this formalism about the physical nature of direct and cascaded dispersive wave emission, a unified description of this radiation in both normal and anomalous dispersion regimes is derived. Previously unidentified physics of broadband spectra reported in earlier works is successfully explained on this basis. Finally, a foundry-compatible few-millimeters-long silicon waveguide allowing octave-spanning supercontinuum generation pumped at telecom wavelengths in the normal dispersion regime is designed, hence showcasing the p…
Automatic recognition of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep by artificial neural networks.
1995
Artificial neural networks are well known for their good performance in pattern recognition. Their suitability for detecting REM sleep periods on the basis of preprocessed EEG data in humans under clinical conditions was tested and their performance compared with the manual evaluation. A single channel of the EEG signal was analysed in time periods of 20 s and preprocessed into a vector of six real numbers, which served as input to the network. EOG and EMG information was ignored. Backpropagation was used as a learning rule for the network, which consisted of 12 neurons and 39 synapses. Training datasets were put together from the input vectors and the corresponding sleep stages were scored…
Perspectives of the encapsulation technology in the nursery activity of Citrus
2007
The genetic and phytosanitary certification has to guarantee the quality of the propagation material also in Citrus. Traditional methods can be assisted by the techniques of in vitro culture, which are fundamental for the mass production of high quality plants. The encapsulation technology represents an innovative tool to combine the advantages of micropropagation with handling ease, storability, reduced size of the propagules, mechanization potentiality, transportability of the gamic seeds. In this work somatic embryos obtained from in vitro anther culture of the cultivar Mandarino Tardivo di Ciaculli (Citrus reticulata Blanco) were encapsulated in a sodium alginate matrix and synthetic se…
A Problem Based Approach to Sound Propagation in Different Materials
2010
In this paper we present a problem-based approach to the study of sound propagation devoted to pre-service physics teacher education at University of Palermo, Italy. Small groups of trainee teachers are proposed with real life situations and must organize themselves, define objectives, conduct researches, analyze results, and present conclusions. In particular, the problem of wave propagation in different materials is discussed, by starting from the real life situation of soundproofing a house. Examples of experiments performed by the trainee teachers with Real Time Laboratory (RTL) equipment and of interpretative models built and tested by using computer simulation environments are reporte…
