Heat of crystallization significantly slows down polymer cooling and thus pressure drop increase during mould filling with thermoplastic crystalline polymers. If a correction of thermal diffusivity can account for such a cooling slow down at least as far as the effect on pressure drop is concerned, the use of nonisothermal crystallization kinetics may be avoided in the simulation of mould filling. A procedure to identify such a correction is outlined in this work. Pressure drop values during cavity filling calculated by using a corrected thermal diffusivity in the model proposed by Lord and Williams favourably compare with literature data taken with polypropylene and polyethylene resins. Be…

Effect of multiple honey doses on non-specific acute cough in children. An open randomised study and literature review.

2015

Abstract Background Honey is recommended for non-specific acute paediatric cough by the Australian guidelines. Current available randomised clinical trials evaluated the effects of a single evening dose of honey, but multiple doses outcomes have never been studied. Objectives To evaluate the effects of wildflower honey, given for three subsequent evenings, on non-specific acute paediatric cough, compared to dextromethorphan (DM) and levodropropizine (LDP), which are the most prescribed over-the-counter (OTC) antitussives in Italy. Methods 134 children suffering from non-specific acute cough were randomised to receive for three subsequent evenings a mixture of milk (90 ml) and wildflower hon…

Laser Welding - Suitable for Vascular Anastomosis?

1994

Carotid arteries of 21 piglets were transsected and reanastomosed either by laser welding (Neodym:YAG laser) or by conventional suture anastomosis. Histological specimens of the anastomoses obtained 2 to 32 days after the operation showed less foreign body reaction and intimal hyperplasia after laser welding than after suturing. There was, however, no significant difference when comparing occurrence of thrombosis, patency rate, or growth of the anastomosis in growing animals. Neither our study nor a review of the literature of laser-assisted vascular anastomosis in microvessels and large arteries up to 5 mm diameter could establish a definite clinical application for laser welding in vascul…

Titania–Silica Materials for Enhanced Photocatalysis

2015

Mesoporous titania–organosilica nanoparticles comprised of anatase nanocrystals crosslinked with organosilica moieties have been prepared by direct co-condensation of a titania precursor, tetrabuthylortotitanate (TBOT), with two organosilica precursors, 1,4-bis(triethoxysilyl) benzene (BTEB) and 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl) ethane (BTEE), in mild conditions and in the absence of surfactant. These hybrid materials show both high surface areas (200–360 m2 g−1) and pore volumes (0.3 cm3 g−1) even after calcination, and excellent photoactivity in the degradation of rhodamine 6G and in the partial oxidation of propene under UV irradiation, especially after the calcination of the samples. During calci…

Chemical composition and particle size influence the toxicity of nanoscale plastic debris and their co-occurring benzo(α)pyrene in the model aquatic …

2021

Little is known about how particle chemical composition and size might influence the toxicity of nanoscale plastic debris (NPD) and their co-occurring chemicals. Herein, we investigate the toxicity of 3 × 1010 particles/L polyethylene (PE, 50 nm), polypropylene (PP, 50 nm), polystyrene (PS, 200 and 600 nm), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC, 200 nm) NPD and their co-occurring benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) to Daphnia magna and Danio rerio. During the 21 days of exposure to PE 50 nm and PS 200 nm, the number of broods produced by D. magna decreased compared to other treatments. Exposure to BaP alone did not produce any effects on the reproduction of the daphnids, however, the mixture of BaP with PS (200 or …

Early stress response of human nasal respiratory epithelia after exposure to 1-methoxypropanol-2

2007

To evaluate the impact of 1-methoxypropanol-2 (MEP) for the stimulation of an inflammatory response in human respiratory mucosa, we exposed 22 primary cell cultures of nasal respiratory epithelia of healthy individuals to MEP concentrations at the level of the German MAK-value (100 ppm) and to the 10-fold concentration (1000 ppm). After 4 and 24h we analyzed the transcription of TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1, GMCSF, Cox-1 and Cox-2 by quantitative PCR as well as the release of the respective cytokines by ELISA. At both MEP concentrations we observed a significant increase of TNF-alpha-, IL-1beta-, IL-6- and Cox-2-transcripts after 4h. After 24h cytokine transcription of TNF-alpha, …

Biologic response of inguinal hernia prosthetics: a comparative study of conventional static meshes versus 3D dynamic implants.

2015

Despite improvements in prosthetics and surgical techniques, the rate of complications following inguinal hernia repair remains high. Among these, discomfort and chronic pain have become a source of increasing concern among surgeons. Poor quality of tissue ingrowth, such as thin scar plates or shrinking scars-typical results with conventional static implants and plugs-may contribute to these adverse events. Recently, a new type of 3D dynamically responsive implant was introduced to the market. This device, designed to be placed fixation-free, seems to induce ingrowth of viable and structured tissue instead of regressive fibrotic scarring. To elucidate the differences in biologic response be…

Polypropylene/graphene nanoplatelets nanocomposites subjected to elongational flow

2018

In this work the effect of the presence of graphene nanoplatelets (GnP) on the morphology and mechanical properties of polypropylene/GnP nanocomposites has been investigated when these polymer systems are subjected to non-isothermal elongational flow in a melt spinning operation. The presence of the GnP magnifies the effect of the elongational flow. Indeed, the elastic modulus and the tensile strength increases with the orientation more than that observed for the pure matrix.

Photo-oxidative behavior of PP/GnP nanocomposites

2018

In this work the photo-oxidative behavior of neat polypropylene (PP) and PP based nanocomposites incorporating graphene nanoplatelets (GnP) was studied. In particular, the influence of the amount of incorporated GnP was evaluated. The photo-oxidation has been followed by monitoring the change of the rheological, mechanical and spectroscopic properties upon artificial exposure to UV-B light. The results revealed that the presence of GnP reduced the rate of photooxidation of the PP matrix and, in the investigated composition range, the photo-stabilizing action improved with increasing the GnP content.

Effect of pressure on the PVT behaviour of iPP as revealed by dilatometric measurements

2002

Isotactic Poly-propylene samples, previously prepared under known conditions of pressure and cooling rate by means of a special apparatus designed and set-up by the authors, were subjected to several isobaric runs at low cooling and heating rate in a confining fluid dilatometer (by GNOMIX). The effect of the previous thermo-mechanical histories and the effect of pressure in the dilatometry on specific volume of the samples was studied. Results show that the initial specific volume depends upon the previous thermo-mechanical histories, which however cancels out after the first heating run. Moreover the reported dilatometric experimental data support the evidence that an increase of pressure …
