Polymer mechanical recycling: downcycling or upcycling?

2004

Recycled plastics are considered as materials with physical, mechanical and aesthetic properties worse than the virgin ones. In fact, this is true because degradation during lifetime and during the recycling operations changes the structure and the morphology of the polymers and then the final properties of the secondary material. Several “strategies” are under investigation, and in some cases also applied, in order to avoid further degradation during recycling and, if possible, to repair the macromolecules broken during lifetime and then to restore or to improve the initial properties. In this paper the more important techniques, already used in industry or under investigation, according …

Highly cross-linked imidazolium salt entrapped magnetic particles – preparation and applications

2012

Magnetic particles entrapped into highly cross-linked imidazolium salts were synthesized using a straightforward approach by radical polymerization of bis-vinylimidazolium salts in the presence of superparamagnetic iron oxide particles. Potential applications for these new materials as (i) catalysts for conversion of propylene oxide to propylene carbonate, (ii) supports for organocatalysts, and (iii) scavenger materials for palladium removal are outlined.

Linear-dendritic nonionic poly(propylene oxide)–polyglycerol surfactants

2003

Abstract A new type of linear-hyperbranched surfactant has been prepared by anionic ring-opening multibranching polymerization of glycidol onto an end-functional poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) macroinitiator. A hyperbranched, highly hydrophilic polyglycerol block is obtained as the polar segment of the structure. Molecular weights of the nonionic amphiphiles obtained were in the range of 390 to 8,600 g/mol. For comparison, initiators bearing a C16 alkyl chain have also been employed. Furthermore, hyperbranched polyglycerol homopolymers were investigated with respect to amphiphilic properties. All linear-dendritic amphiphiles have been characterized by SEC, DSC, 13 C and 1 H NMR spectroscopy. A…

Neutron scattering characterization of homopolymers and graft-copolymer micelles in supercritical carbon dioxide

1996

Abstract Superficial fluids (SCF) are becoming an attractive alternative to the liquid solvents traditionally used as polymerization media [1]. As the synthesis proceeds, a wide range of colloidal aggregates form, but there has hitherto been no way to measure such structures directly. We have applied small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) to characterize such systems, and although SCF polymerizations are carried out at high pressures, the penetrating power of the neutron beam means that typical cell windows are virtually transparent. Systems studied include polymers soluble in CO 2 such as poly(1,1-dihydroperfluorooctyl acrylate) (PFOA), poly(hexafluoropropylene oxide) (PHFPO) and poly(dimet…

Thermodynamics of Aqueous Poly(ethylene oxide)−Poly(propylene oxide)−Poly(ethylene oxide)/Surfactant Mixtures. Effect of the Copolymer Molecular Weig…

2004

A calorimetric study was performed to focus attention on the interactions between copolymers and anionic surfactants in aqueous solutions. Three aspects were analyzed: (1) the hydrophobicity of the surfactant, (2) the change of the copolymer molecular weight, and (3) the nature of the hydrophilicity of the copolymer. To this purpose, the family of sodium alkanoates (sodium octanoate through sodium dodecanoate) and the triblock copolymers EO76PO 29EO76 (F68), EO103PO39EO 103 and EO132PO50EO132 were investigated. Comparing F68 and EO13PO30EO13 (L64), previously studied by us, provided information on the effect of the copolymer hydrophilicity. The experimental data were analyzed by means of a …

Hyperbranched Poly(propylene oxide): A Multifunctional Backbone-Thermoresponsive Polyether Polyol Copolymer

2012

Backbone-thermoresponsive hyperbranched poly(propylene oxide)-based polyether polyols have been synthesized by anionic ring-opening copolymerization of glycidol and propylene oxide. The number of functional hydroxyl end groups and the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) can be readily adjusted by varying the comonomer ratio. Molecular weights in the range of 1200-2000 g/mol were achieved. Hyperbranched polyether polyols with LCST values between 24 and 83 °C can be obtained in a convenient one-step reaction.

Non-linear effect of 18-crown-6 in propylene oxide polymerization with potassium glycidoxide used as the inimer

2004

A new initiating system containing potassium glycidoxide as the inimer and 18-crown-6 as the activator was used for propylene oxide polymerization. It was found that the rate of the reaction increased together with the crown ether concentration in a rather unexpected way. Two maxima of that parameter were found in the case of crown ether : inimer molar ratio equal to 3:1 and 6:1. On the other hand, the molecular weight of polymers showed two minima in those conditions. The heterogeneity of the reaction mixture and interactions between species present in the system could be responsible for the phenomena observed. The polydispersity of the polymers obtained was equal to about 1.2 and it was i…

Crystalline CO2 -Based Aliphatic Polycarbonates with Long Alkyl Chains

2018

Carbon dioxide (CO2 ) is an easily available, renewable carbon source and can be utilized as a comonomer in the catalytic ring-opening polymerization of epoxides to generate aliphatic polycarbonates. Dodecyl glycidyl ether (DDGE) is copolymerized with CO2 and propylene oxide (PO) to obtain aliphatic poly(dodecyl glycidyl ether carbonate) and poly(propylene carbonate-co-dodecyl glycidyl ether carbonate) copolymers, respectively. The polymerization proceeds at 30 °C and high CO2 pressure utilizing the established binary catalytic system (R,R)-Co(salen)Cl/[PPN]Cl. The copolymers with varying DDGE:PO ratios are characterized via NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy, and SEC, exhibiting high molecular weight…

Oxidation-responsive polyether block copolymers lead to non-ionic polymer surfactants with multiple amine N-oxides

2019

Block copolymers consisting of a nonpolar poly(propylene oxide) block and a poly(glycidyl amine) block were prepared by anionic ring-opening polymerization (AROP). The tertiary amine groups of the block copolymers were quantitively transformed into the corresponding zwitterionic amine N-oxides, as confirmed by 1H NMR and 15N NMR spectroscopy. This leads to strongly amphiphilic polyether block copolymers with multiple N-oxides. Full oxidation of the amine groups was also possible in situ in an emulsion, demonstrating the oxidation-responsive character of this new class of non-ionic polymeric surfactants.

New Thermoshrinkable Materials of Radiation Modified Polypropylene-Elastomer Composites with Cross-Linking Agents

2014

In this work, electron beam modified heterogeneous composites of isotactic polypropylene (PP) with chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) have been investigated. The PP/CPE blend composites with an excess of elastomer (30/70 wt%) have been modified with trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) and bisphenol-A-dimethacrylate (BPDMA) cross-linking agents and have been irradiated with accelerated electrons up to ionizing radiation doses from 25 to 150 kGy. The internal stresses characterizing the thermoshrinkage properties (TMP) thermorelaxation stresses formed in thermal heating and the residual stresses resulting in the process of full setting and cooling of materials have been investigated for radiat…
