Association of Vitamin K and Non-Vitamin K Oral Anticoagulant Use and Cancer Incidence in Atrial Fibrillation Patients

2021

The association between the use of vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) and cancer risk reduction remains unclear. We aimed to assess the association between the use of VKAs or direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) and the incidence of cancer in a large cohort of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) by means of a population-based, propensity-weighted cohort study using population-wide databases including patients diagnosed with nonvalvular AF (NVAF) followed for up of 5 years (median 2.94 years). We created two cohorts based on the initiation therapy (VKA or DOAC). Initiation with VKA or DOAC was defined as filling a prescription with no previous exposure in the preceding 12 months. Cancer diagnoses…

Basal growth hormone concentrations in blood and the risk for prostate cancer: A case-control study

2005

OBJECTIVE To assess the relationship between basal serum growth hormone (GH) levels and prostate cancer risk. METHODS We conducted a population-based case-control study; cases included 68 men, aged 45–85 years, diagnosed with incident, primary, histologically confirmed, and clinically apparent (stage B and higher) prostate cancer. Controls included 240 men, frequency matched on age and residential area. Age, race, BMI, waist circumference, history of enlarged prostate, education, and current smoking status, were all considered as possible confounders. RESULTS We found a statistically significant trend of decreasing prostate cancer risk across increasing GH quintiles, in both crude (OR: 0.31…

A Survey of Prostate Segmentation Methodologies in Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance and Computed Tomography Images

2012

Prostate segmentation is a challenging task, and the challenges significantly differ from one imaging modality to another. Low contrast, speckle, micro-calcifications and imaging artifacts like shadow poses serious challenges to accurate prostate segmentation in transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) images. However in magnetic resonance (MR) images, superior soft tissue contrast highlights large variability in shape, size and texture information inside the prostate. In contrast poor soft tissue contrast between prostate and surrounding tissues in computed tomography (CT) images pose a challenge in accurate prostate segmentation. This article reviews the methods developed for prostate gland segmenta…

Pheochromocytoma in the Pediatric Age Group: The Prostate—An Unusual Location

1990

AbstractPheochromocytomas of the prostate are rare, with only 3 cases in adults reported in the literature. We present the case of an 8-year-old boy with a pheochromocytoma of the prostate and a second tumor in the region of the left internal iliac artery. (J. Urol., 144: 1219–1221, 1990)

Model‐based meta‐analysis of the time to first acute urinary retention or benign prostatic hyperplasia‐related surgery in patients with moderate or s…

2021

Aims Combination therapy of 5α‐reductase inhibitor and α‐blocker is a guideline‐endorsed therapeutic approach for patients with moderate‐to‐severe lower urinary tract symptoms or benign prostatic hyperplasia (LUTS/BPH) who are at risk of disease progression. We aimed to disentangle the contribution of clinical and demographic baseline characteristics affecting the risk of acute urinary retention or BPH‐related surgery (AUR/S) from the effect of treatment with drugs showing symptomatic and disease‐modifying properties. Methods A time‐to‐event model was developed using pooled data from patients (n = 10 238) enrolled into six clinical studies receiving placebo, tamsulosin, dutasteride or tamsu…

Urinary and sexual outcomes in long-term (5+ years) prostate cancer disease free survivors after radical prostatectomy.

2009

Abstract Background After long term disease free follow up (FUp) patients reconsider quality of life (QOL) outcomes. Aim of this study is assess QoL in prostate cancer patients who are disease-free at least 5 years after radical prostatectomy (RP). Methods 367 patients treated with RP for clinically localized pCa, without biochemical failure (PSA ≤ 0.2 ng/mL) at the follow up ≥ 5 years were recruited. Urinary (UF) and Sexual Function (SF), Urinary (UB) and Sexual Bother (SB) were assessed by using UCLA-PCI questionnaire. UF, UB, SF and SB were analyzed according to: treatment timing (age at time of RP, FUp duration, age at time of FUp), tumor characteristics (preoperative PSA, TNM stage, pa…

Effect of prolactin and the anti-prolactin bromocriptin on the testosterone uptake and metabolism in androgen-sensitive and insensitive canine organs

1976

Prolactin promotes the growth and function of the prostate in low doses, whereas high doses or previous castration reduce this effect. The antiprolactin bromocriptin should reverse the prolactin action. In the castrated dog the highest accumulation of H3-testosterone given i.v. occurred in the prostate as compared with muscle, urethra, penis, liver and kidney. Prolactin pretreatment increased the radiosteroid uptake only in the liver. Converseley, bromocriptin suppressed the tracer incorporation into the liver, but increased prostatic accumulation. The highest testerone reduction occurred in the prostate of the untreated castrated dogs as compared with other organs. Prolactin suppressed 5 a…

In vivo studies on the antiandrogenic effects of cimetidine versus cyproterone acetate in rats

1981

To investigate the antiandrogenic action of cimetidine in vivo, prostatic androgen uptake and metabolism, spermatogenesis, morphology of the prostate and testes, and plasma hormone levels were studied using Sprague-Dawley rats, and the results were compared with the effects of cyproterone acetate or castration. Cimetidine and cyproterone acetate caused significant reduction in the weights of the ventral prostate and testes. The changes of ventral prostate were accompanied by a dose-related epithelial atrophy. No adverse effect on spermatogenesis was observed after treatment with cimetidine at daily doses of 50 mg/kg or cyproterone acetate of 10 mg/kg. Although cimetidine treatment induced a…

Natural beta-interferon and androgen receptors in prostatic cancer cells.

1991

Both PC-3 and DU-145 cell lines are androgen-insensitive, but, in our experience, they contain androgen receptors (AR). Treatment of these cells with natural beta-interferon at a concentration of 1,000 IU/ml of culture medium determines an increase of AR (evaluated by a whole-cell assay), statistically significant with respect to control. Androgen unresponsiveness of our cells could be due to an AR level which is lower than that present in hormone-sensitive prostatic cancer cell lines, such as LNCaP cells. For this reason, interferon-promoted AR increase merits further investigation, even if other defects in receptor mechanism, responsible for hormone insensitivity, cannot be excluded.

PI-RADS 3 Lesions: Role of Prostate MRI Texture Analysis in the Identification of Prostate Cancer

2021

Abstract Purpose To determine the diagnostic performance of texture analysis of prostate MRI for the diagnosis of prostate cancer among Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS) 3 lesions. Materials and Methods Forty-three patients with at least 1 PI-RADS 3 lesion on prostate MRI performed between June 2016 and January 2019 were retrospectively included. Reference standard was pathological analysis of radical prostatectomy specimens or MRI-targeted biopsies. Texture analysis extraction of target lesions was performed on axial T2-weighted images and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps using a radiomic software. Lesions were categorized as prostate cancer (Gleason score [GS] …
