Lifetime total and beverage specific - alcohol intake and prostate cancer risk: a case-control study

2004

Abstract Background We investigated lifetime alcohol consumption and prostate cancer risk in a case-control study conducted in Buffalo, NY (1998–2001). Methods The study included 88 men, aged 45 to 85 years with incident, histologically-confirmed prostate cancer and 272 controls. We conducted extensive in-person interviews regarding lifetime alcohol consumption and other epidemiologic data. Results Prostate cancer risk was not associated with lifetime intake of total and beverage specific ethanol. In addition we found no association with number of drinks per day (average drinks per day over the lifetime) or drinks per drinking day (average drinks per day on drinking days only over the lifet…

Posizionamento di protesi peniena malleabile. Risoluzione di complicanza intraoperatoria.

2009

ABSTRACT. We report a technique for the solution of an intraoperative complication occurred during penile prosthetic surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A 70-year-old patient underwent open radical retropubic prostatectomy in 2004 due to a prostate cancer - Gleason 6 (3+3) pT2N0M0. The erectile dysfunction subsequently observed was not responsive to oral or intracavernosal drug administration, so a malleable penile implant surgery was recommended. RESULTS. During the positioning of the left penile cylinder, a septum perforation (cross-over) occurred. Instead of interrupting and postpone surgery in order to allow the septum to recover, we decided to proceed utilizing our technique for a safe pos…

Studio pilota sul valore predittivo dei livelli plasmatici di 9 fattori angiogenetici nella selezione di pazienti candidati alla biopsia prostatica

2013

To reduce the number of negative prostate biopsies in patients with elevated PSA serum levels represents a major challenge in urological oncology. Angiogenetic factors might be involved in initial stages of prostate cancer and might represent useful tools in patients' selection for prostate biopsy. The plasmatic levels of Angiopoietin-2, Follistatin, G-CSF, HGF, IL-8, Leptin, PDGF-BB, PECAM-1 and VEGF were measured by BioPlex immunoassay in patients undergoing prostate biopsy for palpable prostate nodule and/or elevated PSA levels (≥4 ng/mL). They were related with biopsy results. ROC curve analysis was exploited to test the diagnostic accuracy of each biomarker by AUC calculation. A potent…

PLASMATIC SIL 6R/IL-6 RATIO AS APOTENTIAL PREDICTOR OF HIGH GLEASON SUM AT RADICAL PROSTATECTOMY

2012

Background: Approximately 40% of males with low Gleason grade clinically localized prostate cancer (PCa) at biopsy were finally diagnosed with high Gleason grade PCa at radical prostatectomy (RP). Therefore, a more reliable assessment of the Gleason grade prior to RP is required. Readily available modalities such as circulating biomarkers may be useful for this purpose. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of preoperative interleukin 6 (IL-6) and its soluble receptor (sIL-6R), as well as urokinase-type plasminogen activator (u- PA), its receptor (u-PAR) and the inhibitor (PAI-1) to predict Gleason score upgrading. Patients and Methods: A total of 51 PCa patients with biopsy Gle…

DIAGNOSTIC ACCURACY OF IXIP INDEX AND PROSTATE MRI IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF PROSTATE CANCER: PRELIMINARY RESULTS ON A COMBINED APPROACH

2021

The purpose of this study was to assess whether Immune CompleX Predictive Index (iXip) improves diagnostic accuracy of multiparametric prostate MRI (mpMRI) for clinically significant prostate cancer. This study included 72 patients (mean age: 68±8 years) with suspicion of prostate cancer and available iXip score. mpMRI images were evaluated by two radiologists according to the PI-RADS v2.1. Reference standard was based on fusion biopsy and standard transperineal 12-point biopsy. Diagnostic accuracy of iXip, mpMRI and their combination were calculated. Optimal cutoff of iXip with sensitivity and specificity was identified using the Youden index. Patients with clinically significant prostate …

Titanate nanotubes as versatile nanovectors : radiosensitizers for the treatment of prostate cancer and nuclear imaging probes

2017

Currently, the systemic injections of drugs reach very weakly tumor sites and large doses are thus administered causing adverse side effects. The new implementations of nanoparticles in the medical field offer new strategies to vectorize an active substance in diseased cells. This work is focused on the prostate cancer, which is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer and the fifth leading cause of cancer death in men worldwide.Titanate nanotubes (TiONts) are synthetized by a hydrothermal process and have average dimensions of about 170 nm in length, 10 nm in outer diameter and also have an internal cavity of 4 nm in diameter. Their needle-shaped morphology allows them to be internalize…

A Prospective Observational Study on the Structuring Process and Implementation of a Large Regional, Inter-hospital, Virtual Multidisciplinary Tumor …

2022

Background/Aim: At present, multidisciplinary tumor boards (MDTB) are considered best practice in oncology. However, web-based virtualization of MDTB may increase participation in meetings, the number of cases discussed, and adherence to guidelines, deliver better treatment, and eventually improve outcomes for patients with prostate cancer. Patients and Methods: This is an observational study focused on exploring the structuring process and implementing a multi-institutional virtual MDTB in Sicily, Italy. Other endpoints included the analysis of cooperation between participants, adherence to guidelines, patient outcomes, and patient satisfaction. Results: Overall, 126 patients were referred…

Computer-Aided Diagnosis for Prostate Cancer using Multi-Parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging

2016

Prostate cancer (CaP) is the second most diagnosed cancer in men all over the world.CaP growth is characterized by two main types of evolution: (i) the slow-growing tumours progress slowly and usually remain confined to the prostate gland; (ii) the fast-growing tumours metastasize from prostate gland to other organs, which might lead to incurable diseases. Therefore, early diagnosis and risk assessment play major roles in patient treatment and follow-up.In the last decades, new imaging techniques based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) have been developed improving diagnosis. In practise, diagnosis can be affected by multiple factors such as observer variability and visibility and complexit…
