Endoscopic therapy of adenomas of the papilla of Vater. A retrospective analysis with long-term follow-up.

2001

Abstract Aims. To compare the efficacy and the complication rate between endoscopic snare resection of adenomas of Vater's papilla and endoscopic palliation. Methods. In a retrospective, non randomized manner, we compared long-term results of our endoscopic strategies in 36 patients with histologically confirmed adenoma of Vater's papilla submitted either to local endoscopic snare resection (n=18) or to simple endoscopic palliation (n=18), respectively. Results. Between 1985 and 1998 results were reviewed. Median age was 76.5 (range 42–89) years in the palliation, and 64.0(23–89) years in the endoscopic snare resection group. Median duration of follow-up was 33 (6–135) and 75.0 (27–123) mon…

Evaluation of the stromal vascular fraction of adipose tissue as the basis for a stem cell-based tissue-engineered vascular graft

2017

Abstract Objective One of the rate-limiting barriers within the field of vascular tissue engineering is the lengthy fabrication time associated with expanding appropriate cell types in culture. One particularly attractive cell type for this purpose is the adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cell (AD-MSC), which is abundant and easily harvested from liposuction procedures. Even this cell type has its drawbacks, however, including the required culture period for expansion, which could pose risks of cellular transformation or contamination. Eliminating culture entirely would be ideal to avoid these concerns. In this study, we used the raw population of cells obtained after digestion of human lipo…

Endocarditis due to Abiotrophia defectiva, a biofilm-related infection associated with the presence of fixed braces

2017

Abstract Rationale: Endocarditis with Abiotrophia defectiva represents 4.3% to 6% of all streptococcal endocarditis. The article presents diagnosis issues and the complexity of the treatment. Patient concerns: We present the case of a female white patient, aged 26 years, who developed infectious endocarditis caused by A defectiva, in the last trimester of pregnancy, a biofilm-related infection associated with the presence of fixed braces. Diagnoses: The diagnosis of infectious endocarditis was confirmed by the cardiac ultrasound examination that revealed a voluminous vegetation on the mitral valve, and acute mitral regurgitation caused by chordae tendinae rupture, and also by isolating Abio…

Primary Orbital Liposarcoma in Li-Fraumeni Cancer Family Syndrome: A Case Report

2005

Aims and background The aim of this study was to describe a case of primary orbital liposarcoma in Li-Fraumeni syndrome. Methods and study design In July 1998 a 20-year-old woman with a histological diagnosis of orbital myxoid liposarcoma underwent surgical treatment in our department. Since the patient's family pedigree met the clinical criteria for the diagnosis of LFS, molecular analysis was performed, which resulted in a molecular profile consistent with Li-Fraumeni syndrome. Results The patient underwent orbital exenteration extended to the upper eyelid; surgical reconstructive steps were performed to permit placement of an orbital prosthesis. Two years after primary surgery the patien…

Visual performance of the Akreos Adapt AO intraocular lens in patients with different corneal profiles measured with an adaptive optics visual simula…

2012

AIMS: To evaluate the visual performance of an aberration-free intraocular lens (IOL) in patients with different corneal profiles using adaptive optics visual simulation. METHODS: A crx1 adaptive optics visual simulator was used to simulate the aberration pattern of an aberration-free IOL combined with five corneal profiles: virgin corneas and corneas with low and high myopic ablations and low and high hyperopic ablations. Ten eyes of 10 subjects were evaluated, and monocular distance visual acuity (VA) at 100%, 50% and 10% of contrast was measured. RESULTS: At 100% of contrast, no differences were found in VA values among virgin corneas, low and high myopic ablations and low hyperopic abla…

Extraction of Impacted Maxillary Canines With Simultaneous Implant Placement

2005

When impacted maxillary canines are not amenable to orthodontic traction or reimplantation, extraction is the only option available, followed by implant placement. If apical and ridge crest bone remains after the extraction of the maxillary canines, an immediate implant can be placed. The implant is anchored bicortically with good primary fixation. This article presents a new surgical technique that allows an immediate implant placement after the extraction of the maxillary canines. The full circumference of the implant is left without bone coverage, except for the apical and coronal area. The implant screw threads and the bone defect are covered with the bone shavings collected by the filt…

Vertical Mandibular Alveolar Bone Distraction and Dental Implant Placement: A Case Report

2006

Abstract Extensive bone defects complicate the adequate placement of dental implants and the required angulation. In such cases, alveolar-ridge augmentation techniques such as guided bone regeneration, particulate or block grafting, and alveolar bone distraction are needed. The present study describes a case in which a large vertical bone defect in the anterior mandibular zone was corrected via vertical alveolar bone distraction. Six dental implants were posteriorly placed for implant-supported restoration of the mandible, with early implant loading. The clinical and radiologic control showed good implant and soft tissue conditions 12 months later.

Simulated prototype of posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens for presbyopia correction.

2014

Purpose To evaluate the visual impact of adding different spherical aberration values to an Implantable Collamer Lens phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) to increase the depth of focus using an adaptive optics visual simulator. Setting University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain. Design Experimental study. Methods Wavefront aberrations in −3.00 D and −6.00 diopter (D) pIOLs were measured in vitro. Afterward, different simulated pIOL experimental prototypes were created along with variances in the spherical aberration. An adaptive optics visual simulator was used to simulate vision after the implantation of the different pIOL prototypes from their wavefront aberrations. The corrected distance visual …
