Relation between bone quality values from ultrasound transmission velocity and implant stability parameters--an ex vivo study.

2011

Aim The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between bone qualities measured by ultrasound transmission velocity (UTV) and primary implant stability parameters measured by radiofrequency analysis (RFA) and push-out test (POT) in an ex-vivo model. Materials and methods Three blocks of fresh porcine bone samples were obtained from different anatomic regions, correlating to cortical, mixed and cancellous bone. Mechanical bone qualities of these samples were measured using UTV (expressed in m/s) prior to implantation. Three similar implants (4.1 × 11 mm, AstraTech OS) were inserted into each of the procured bone blocks. The evaluation of implant-bone interface stability was…

The role of angiogenesis in implant dentistry part I: Review of titanium alloys, surface characteristics and treatments

2015

Background: Angiogenesis plays an important role in osseointegration process by contributing to inflammatory and regenerative phases of surrounding alveolar bone. The present review evaluated the effect of titanium alloys and their surface characteristics including: surface topography (macro, micro, and nano), surface wettability/ energy, surface hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity, surface charge, and surface treatments of dental implants on angiogenesis events, which occur during osseointegration period. Material and Methods: An electronic search was performed in PubMed, MEDLINE, and EMBASE databases via OVID using the keywords mentioned in the PubMed and MeSH headings regarding the role of …

Vertical osteoconductivity and early bone formation of titanium-zirconium and titanium implants in a subperiosteal rabbit animal model.

2013

Objectives The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the vertical osteoconductive and osteointegrative dynamics around titanium–zirconium (TiZr) implants compared to titanium (Ti) implants. Materials and methods In a split-leg design, 12 TiZr-SLActive and 12 Ti-SLActive implants were inserted 3 mm above bone level in the proximal tibia of 12 rabbits. Full periosteal flaps were repositioned to cover the site. Specimens were obtained after 10, 20 and 30 days (each n = 4 per group). Histomorphometric measurements included percentage of linear bone fill (PLF; %), new marginal vertical bone height (VBH; mm) and vertical bone-to-implant contact (vBIC; %). Statistical analysis was performed with…

Amorphous and crystalline polyetheretherketone: Mechanical properties and tissue reactions during a 3-year follow-up.

2007

The study was aimed to test the mechanical strength, structural stability, and tissue reactions of optically amorphous and crystalline polyetheretherketone (PEEK) plates during a 3-year follow-up in vivo and in vitro. The injection-moulded PEEK plates were implanted to the dorsal subcutis of 12 sheep, which were sacrificed at 6-156 weeks. Thereafter, the plates were subjected to tensile tests, and levels of crystallinity were assessed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Histological evaluation was carried out using the paraffin technique. In vitro properties were examined with the tensile test and DSC at 0-156 weeks. Tissue reactions were mild and fairly similar for the amorphous an…

Soft Tissue Healing at One-Piece Zirconia Implants Compared to Titanium and PEEK Implants of Identical Design: A Histomorphometric Study in the Dog

2013

This study aimed to histomorphometrically evaluate the soft tissue reactions of one-piece zirconia implants versus titanium implants in regard to their insertion depth. Four one-piece implants of identical geometry were inserted on each side of six mongrel dogs: an uncoated zirconia implant, a zirconia implant coated with a calcium liberating titanium oxide, a titanium implant, and an experimental implant made of a synthetic material. Using a split-mouth design, they were inserted in both submerged and nonsubmerged healing modes. After 4 months, dissected blocks were stained with toluidine blue to histologically assess the marginal portion of the implant mucosa, apical extension of the barr…

Der HEPFIEx-Simulator, eine Apparatur zur Bestimmung der Reibzahlen zwischen Hüftkopf-Prothesen und Knorpel / The HEPFlEx Simulator, a Device for Mea…

2002

We describe a device designed to investigate friction between various femoral head prostheses and human acetabula. It enables not only the determination of friction and the relevance of the play between the femoral head and acetabulum, but also the evaluation of the kinematic behaviour of bipolar prostheses. In the simulator, the various femoral head prostheses are placed on a special cone and tested against a human cadaveric acetabulum. The swiveling range of the device is uniaxial, and the swiveling angle is +/- 35 degrees. The maximum force produced pneumatically is 5kN. Testing of the simulator with a TEP was successful and friction-coefficients of < 0.1 were measured, as are reported i…

Effect of retention design of artificial teeth and implant-supported titanium CAD-CAM structures on fracture resistance

2014

Background For implant-supported hybrid prostheses, high mastication forces and reduced acrylic resin thickness over a metal substructure often cause failures arising from tooth or resin fractures. To assay fracture resistance of artificial teeth and resin in implant-supported hybrid prostheses in relation to the titanium structure and retention design supporting teeth. Material and Methods 40 specimens bearing incisors were divided into four groups according to the titanium structure supporting the teeth and the type of load force applied: Group I (Control; n=10): Application of static loading to ten incisors set over a metal structure with internal retention. Group II (Control; n=10): App…

Improving PMMA resin using graphene oxide for a definitive prosthodontic rehabilitation - A clinical report

2019

The use of acrylic resins as a definitive material has shown some advantages comparing to other definitive materials. However, their poor mechanical properties remain a major drawback. In this case report, graphene oxide (GO) was incorporated into polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin for a definitive maxillary rehabilitation, combined with an intraoral digital impression and a three-dimensional facial scan. After 8 months of the placement of the definitive prosthesis, no mechanical, aesthetic, or biologic complications were reported, and the soft tissues showed excellent health and stability. The incorporation of GO in PMMA resins seems to be a suitable option for prosthetic rehabilitation.…

Rehabilitation of atrophic maxilla: a review of 101 zygomatic implants

2008

Introduction: Zygomatic implants are a good rehabilitation alternative for upper maxilla with severe bone reabsorption. These implants reduce the need for onlay-type bone grafting in the posterior sectors and for maxillary sinus lift procedures - limiting the use of bone grafts to the anterior zone of the upper jaw in those cases where grafting is considered necessary. Objective: To evaluate the survival of 101 zygomatic implants placed in upper maxilla presenting important bone reabsorption, with a follow-up of 1-72 months. Patients and methods: A retrospective study was made of 101 Zygoma® implants (Nobel Biocare, Göteborg, Sweden) placed in 54 patients with totally edentulous and atrophi…
