The randomized shortened dental arch study: tooth loss.

2010

The evidence concerning the management of shortened dental arch (SDA) cases is sparse. This multi-center study was aimed at generating data on outcomes and survival rates for two common treatments, removable dental prostheses (RDP) for molar replacement or no replacement (SDA). The hypothesis was that the treatments lead to different incidences of tooth loss. We included 215 patients with complete molar loss in one jaw. Molars were either replaced by RDP or not replaced, according to the SDA concept. First tooth loss after treatment was the primary outcome measure. This event occurred in 13 patients in the RDP group and nine patients in the SDA group. The respective Kaplan-Meier survival r…

ADDISC lumbar disc prosthesis: Analytical and FEA testing of novel implants

2023

The intact intervertebral disc is a six-freedom degree elastic deformation structure with shock absorption. 'Ball-and-socket' TDR do not reproduce these properties inducing zygapophyseal joint overload. Elastomeric TDRs reproduce better normal disc kinematics, but repeated core deformation causes its degeneration. We aimed to create a new TDR (ADDISC) reproducing healthy disc features. We designed TDR, analyzed (Finite Element Analysis), and measured every 500,000 cycles for 10 million cycles of the flexion-extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation cyclic compression bench-testing. In the inlay case, we weighted it and measured its deformation. ADDISC has two semi-spherical articular s…

AGE8. Is the Serum N Terminal Pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide the Best Candidate Biomarker for Long-term Prognosis in Patients with Prosthesis-patient Mismatch after Mitral Valve Replacement? C. R. Ruvolo1 1University Of Palermo, Palermo, Italy Background: Natriuretic peptides (NPs) are released from the heart in response to pressure and volume overload. Among these, B-NP and Nterminal- proBNP (NT-proBNP) have become important diagnostic tools for the management of heart failure. However, B-NP and NT-proBNP levels reflect complications of systolic and diastolic function as well as alteration …

Expression of the proto-oncogene c-myc in human stenotic aortocoronary bypass grafts.

2002

Summary Proliferation and differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) are central events in vascular pathobiology and play a major role in the development of stenotic and restenotic lesions [ 15, 27 ] . The proto-oncogene c-myc and other early cell cycle-regulating genes have been implicated in the induction of cell proliferation and differentiation under diverse pathophysiological conditions [ 11, 13 ] . In the present study we analyzed c-myc mRNAexpression by indirect nonradioactive in situ hybridization technique (NISH) in human stenotic venous bypass grafts (n = 32) retrieved during re-do operations of coronary artery disease and compared the results with 28 native veins (ven…

Evaluation of the healing of precoated vascular dacron prostheses.

1991

Knitted and woven Dacron grafts commercially coated with bovine collagen, gelatin and human albumin were implanted end-to-side between the infrarenal aorta and the bifurcation in 35 growing pigs. Grafts were explanted after 4, 8 and 12 weeks and compared to 6 uncoated knitted prostheses preclotted with blood that served as a control. Uncoated grafts rapidly developed a firmly attached neointima lined with endothelium. Compared with coated grafts the thrombus-free area of uncoated grafts was significantly larger (P less than 0.05). The slow resorption of albumin resulted in a delayed and incomplete neointimal healing and failing graft incorporation. Although the bovine collagen was only mini…

Short stem total hip arthroplasty: Potential explanations for persistent post-surgical thigh pain.

2017

Abstract: Short stem uncemented femoral implants were developed with the aim of preserving proximal bone stock for future revisions, improving biomechanical reconstruction, aiding insertion through smaller incisions and potentially decreasing or limiting the incidence of thigh pain. Despite all the advantages of short stem designs, it remains unclear whether they are able to limit post-surgical thigh pain. In patients with short stem hip arthroplasty and persistent thigh pain, it is of the utmost importance to understand the potential etiologies of this chronic pain for selecting the appropriate treatment strategy. Therefore, this manuscript explores the hypothetical etiologies of persisten…

A Novel Technique Using Polytetrafluoroethylene Tape to Solve Screw Loosening Complication in Implant-Supported Single Crowns

2020

This study aimed to analyze a novel technique to make screws with greater untightening resistance and to solve screw loosening in implant-supported single crowns. Thirty grade IV titanium straight abutments were screwed onto 30 external hex implants using grade IV titanium screws (30 Ncm). They were exposed to cyclic loading (300,000 cycles, 200 N). Samples were divided into 4 groups (15 samples per group): new screws (SCREW group) (control), reused screws (rSCREW group), new screws wrapped with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tape (PTFE group), and reused screws wrapped with PTFE tape (rPTFE group). Reverse torque values (RTVs) were recorded with a digitally calibrated implant motor. Mean R…

Aesthetic perception of single implants placed in the anterior zone. A cross-sectional study

2016

Background: Several aesthetic indexes have been described to assess implant aesthetics. The aim of this study was to compare the aesthetic assessment made by dental professionals and students of single-tooth implants placed in the upper incisors. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional survey study using a subjective questionnaire to assess the aesthetics in 3 implant supported single-tooth cases in the anterior maxilla was performed. The interviewed subjects were divided into 4 groups: dentists with experience in implant treatment, dentists without experience in implants and 3rd and 5th year dental students. The questionnaire consisted of 2 visual analogue scales (VAS) to evaluate aestheti…
