Diffractive corneal inlay for presbyopia
2017
[EN] A conceptually new type of corneal inlays for a customized treatment of presbyopia is presented. The diffractive inlay consists on a small aperture disc having an array of micro-holes distributed inside the open zones of a Fresnel zone plate. In this way, the central hole of the disc lets pass the zero order diffraction and produces an extension of the depth of far focus of the eye, while the diffracted light through the holes in the periphery produce the near focus. Additionally, the micro-holes in the inlay surface fulfill the essential requirement of allowing the flow of nutrients through it to the cells of the corneal stroma. Theoretical and optical-bench experimental results for t…
Through-focus response of multifocal intraocular lenses evaluated with a spatial light modulator
2012
A new testing technique based on the use of a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) is proposed to analyze the optical quality of multifocal intraocular lenses (MIOLs). Different vergences and decentrations of the incident beam can be programmed onto the SLM in order to record the point spread function (PSF) for different object positions. From these axial PSFs, the through-focus modulation transfer function is computed. Because there are no moving parts in the experimental setup, this method is fast and versatile to assess MIOLs. Experimental results confirm the potential of the proposed method.
Penetrating aortic ulcer post migration of thoracic aortic endoprosthesis: Case report
2021
Introduction Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) is the first treatment option for many thoracic aortic pathologies. Especially after aortic dissections, it is possible to have progression during follow-up with appearance of new lesions on arterial wall. Herein, we report a case of Penetrating Aortic Ulcer (PAU) post release of Thoracic endoprosthesis. Presentation of case A 67-years-old male with hypertension and diabetes mellitus was followed at our hospital after an emergency procedure for Type B aortic dissection (TBAD) complicated by symptomatic large infrarenal AAA and treated with a proximal TEVAR plus chimney for left subclavian artery and PETTICOAT with EVAR for abdominal a…
Posizionamento di protesi peniena malleabile. Risoluzione di complicanza intraoperatoria.
2009
ABSTRACT. We report a technique for the solution of an intraoperative complication occurred during penile prosthetic surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A 70-year-old patient underwent open radical retropubic prostatectomy in 2004 due to a prostate cancer - Gleason 6 (3+3) pT2N0M0. The erectile dysfunction subsequently observed was not responsive to oral or intracavernosal drug administration, so a malleable penile implant surgery was recommended. RESULTS. During the positioning of the left penile cylinder, a septum perforation (cross-over) occurred. Instead of interrupting and postpone surgery in order to allow the septum to recover, we decided to proceed utilizing our technique for a safe pos…
Biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT) for implant-supported fixed prostheses
2017
A patient of 58 years of age without medical problems came to the clinic due to missing teeth in the upper posterior region and to change the partial fixed prosthesis in the upper anterior area. Proposed treatment: surgical phase of three conical shape tapering implants with prosthetic platform in occlusal direction with mechanize collar tissue level with fixtures to place implant-supported metal-ceramic restorations. In the anterior area, a zirconium oxide fixed partial prosthesis was vertical preparation of the tooth’s. When preparing teeth to receive fixed prostheses, the definition and shape of finish lines has been a subject of endless discussion, modification, and change ever since th…
Combination prosthetic design providing a superior retention for mid-facial defect rehabilitation: A Case Report
2017
Large maxillofacial defects from malignant tumor treatment are rarely rehabilitated by surgical reconstruction alone. Ameloblastic carcinoma, a rare aggressive odontogenic malignant tumor, requires wide surgical excision to gain a tumor-free margin. In the post-surgical defect, prosthetic rehabilitation is the treatment of choice to restore function and esthetics. Moreover, an intra-oral prosthesis such as an obturator restores speech, mastication and deglutition. Retention of the obturator is a major problem while rehabilitating large defects. The existing anatomical structures from the defect with the help of magnet attachments are suitable to enhance retention, stability and support of t…
Marginal adaptation of three-unit interim restorations fabricated by the CAD-CA systems and the direct method before and after thermocycling
2020
Background Limited information is available regarding the marginal adaptation of three-unit interim restorations fabricated by different techniques from different materials. Also, the efficacy of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) systems for their fabrication is still questionable. This study aimed to assess the marginal adaptation of three-unit interim restorations fabricated by the CAD-CAM systems and the direct method from different materials before and after thermocycling. Material and Methods A sound mandibular second premolar and a second molar were prepared for a three-unit all-ceramic restoration. Metal dies were fabricated to simulate a case of mandibular…
Immediate prosthesis over implants retained using abutments with flexible screws: A preliminary study
2017
Background Immediate loading protocols for the rehabilitation of edentulous or partially edentulous patients have become very popular, due to the conveniences they afford in comparison with conventional loading techniques. Material and Methods A preliminary study was carried out with 8 patients subjected to dental implant treatment with an immediate loading protocol involving a novel system of abutments with flexible screws. Implant survival was analyzed, together with marginal bone loss and patient and dentist satisfaction. Results A total of 35 implants were subjected to immediate loading using the abutments with flexible screws. The mean patient and dentist satisfaction score was 9.1 and…
Marginal bone loss around cement and screw-retained fixed implant prosthesis
2018
Background Implant-supported fixed restorations are considered as the standard treatment for replacement of missing teeth. These can be either screw or cement retained. The success or failure of implant restorations depend upon amount of marginal bone loss (MBL). The present study is to determine the MBL around cement and screw-retained implant prosthesis and to determine various predictors of the MBL. Material and Methods A retrospective charts review was conducted at the dental clinics, Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi from February 2017 to June 2017 in which 104 implants restorations were assessed using periapical radiographs. MBL was calculated at baseline and at 12 months and the …
Immediate placement of single implant simultaneously with immediate loading in a fresh socket associated to periapical infection: a clinical case rep…
2015
Early restoration of the masticatory function, phonatory and aesthetics is some of the current goals of the therapy based on endosseous implants. Facing the classic protocols of implant insertion, which recommend a period of several months between extraction and implant placement, alternatives have been developed that demonstrate that immediate implant placement after tooth extraction permits adequate osseointegration, even in those cases where there is a periapical disease. The immediate restoration of implants after placement is a possibility where aesthetic requirements are high. This article presents a case with immediate implant placement and immediate loading of a first upper premolar…
