The effect of surgical suture material on osteoclast generation and implant-loosening

2020

Background: Implant loosening - either infectious or aseptic- is a still a major complication in the field of orthopaedic surgery. In both cases, a pro-inflammatory peri-prosthetic environment is generated by the immune system - either triggered by bacteria or by implant wear particles - which leads to osteoclast differentiation and osteolysis. Since infectious cases in particular often require multiple revision surgeries, we wondered whether commonly used surgical suture material may also activate the immune system and thus contribute to loss of bone substance by generation of osteoclasts. Methods: Tissue samples from patients suffering from infectious implant loosening were collected intr…

Crystalens HD Intraocular Lens Analysis Using an Adaptive Optics Visual Simulator

2013

PURPOSE To compare visual and optical quality of the Crystalens HD intraocular lens (IOL) with that of a monofocal IOL. METHODS The wavefront aberration patterns of the monocular Akreos Adapt AO IOL and the single-optic accommodating Crystalens HD IOL were measured in a model eye. The Crystalens IOL was measured in its nonaccommodative state and then, after flexing the haptic to produce 1.4 mm of movement, in its accommodative state. Using an adaptive optics system, subjects' aberrations were removed and replaced with those of pseudophakes viewing with either lens. Monocular distance visual acuity (DVA) at high (100%), medium (50%), and low (10%) contrast and contrast sensitivity (CS) were …

Bacteremia following dental implant surgery : preliminary results

2010

Objectives: The aims of this study were to investigate the incidence of bacteremia, bacteriology and antibiotic susceptibility against to causative bacteria associated with dental implant installation. Study Design: 30 generally healthy patients were enrolled in this study. Blood samples were collected at baseline and at 30 minutes after dental implant installation and 24 hours after dental implant surgery. Blood samples were cultured in a BACTEC system. The isolated bacteria were identified using conventional methods. Antimicrobial sensitivity tests were performed by disc diffusion. Results: No bacteria were isolated at the baseline and 24 hours after surgery, whereas the prevalence of bac…

Incidence of thromboembolic complications in patients with mechanical heart valves with a subtherapeutic international normalized ratio.

2008

Objective Subtherapeutic international normalized ratios are frequently encountered in clinical practice, and patients with mechanical heart valves with inadequate anticoagulation may be exposed to an increased risk of thromboembolic events. There are no data on thromboembolic event risk for these patients. Methods We assessed the current practice patterns in the management of patients with mechanical heart valves with subtherapeutic international normalized ratios and assessed the risk of thromboembolic complications in this setting. The charts of patients with mechanical heart valves followed up in two anticoagulation clinics were reviewed. Patients with a history of stable, therapeutic a…

Long-term outcome of patients with or without osseointegrated implants after resection of mandibular ameloblastoma and reconstruction with vasculariz…

2018

BACKGROUND: The optimal management after the resection of mandibular ameloblastoma has been very challenging to surgeons. The aim of this study is to evaluate the functional, aesthetic, and quality of life outcomes of patients who had a segmental mandibular resection and immediate reconstruction with or without osseointegrated implants. METHOD: Patients' demographics, tumor characteristics, treatment, and complications were retrieved. Patients were divided into two groups: dental rehabilitated vs. nondental rehabilitated depending on the placement of osseointegrated implants followed by an implanted-retained prosthesis. Functional outcomes and quality of life were assessed using the Perform…

Long-term results of surgical treatment of high myopia with Worst-Fechner intraocular lenses

1995

Abstract This retrospective study evaluated the results in 90 eyes that had a minus-power anterior chamber intraocular lens implanted to correct high myopia. Preoperative myopia ranged from −7.00 to −24.00 D. Postoperative spherical equivalent was −0.50 D; 80.5% of eyes were within 1.00 D of emmetropia. Two years postoperatively, no cataract formation, retinal detachment, glaucoma, or significant endothelial damage had occurred. We conclude that minus-power lenses can rapidly, safely, and predictably correct high myopia in phakic patients.

Characterization of the effect of intracorneal ring segment in corneal ectasia after laser refractive surgery

2018

Purpose: To evaluate the visual, refractive, topographic, pachymetric, and biomechanical outcomes after intracorneal ring segment implantation in corneas with post-LASIK ectasia. Methods: Retrospective longitudinal study enrolling 26 eyes of 22 patients with post-LASIK ectasia and undergoing intracorneal ring segment implantation (KeraRing®, Mediphacos) using a 60-kHz femtosecond laser (IntraLase®, IntraLase Corp.) for corneal tunnelization. Visual, refractive, anterior, and posterior corneal topographic (Pentacam HR, Oculus), pachymetric, and corneal biomechanical changes (Ocular response Analyzer, Reichert) were evaluated during a 12-month follow-up. Vector analysis of astigmatic changes …

Management of Cochlear Implant Electrode Migration.

2016

The present study reviewed a cochlear implant (CI) patient population after surgery, which received a free-fitting electrode carrier designed for hearing preservation. The aim was to determine the rate of electrode migration of the CI electrodes and present clinical and surgical implications.Retrospective patient review.Tertiary referral university hospital. Two hundred seventy-eight patients implanted uni- or bilaterally with lateral wall electrodes designed for hearing preservation (358 implants). The control group was 323 patients implanted uni- or bilaterally with preformed perimodiolar electrodes (468 implants).Determination of CI electrode migration was conducted according to a clinica…

Questionable Value of Adjuvant Arteriovenous Fistula in Pedal Bypass at High Risk for Early Failure

2007

Results of an adjuvant arteriovenous fistula (AVF) in pedal bypass surgery in the presence of poor status of the recipient artery, severely impaired intraoperative runoff, or revision for early failure and flow restitution were analyzed in a retrospective study. From January 1998 to December 2006, 24 adjuvant AVFs were constructed in autologous vein or composite pedal bypasses with low intraoperative bypass flow, poor status of the pedal artery, or during successful early bypass revision to prevent graft failure. All infrainguinal bypass operations were registered in a computerized database and prospectively followed. Pedal bypasses with adjunctive AVF were reviewed for fistula function, gr…

Reoperation Rates Following Instrumented Lumbar Spine Fusion

2018

Study Design. A prospective cohort study. Objective. This study evaluated the cumulative reoperation rate and indications for reoperation following instrumented lumbar spine fusion (LSF). Summary of Background Data. LSF reduces disability and improves health-related quality of life for patients with several spinal disorders. The rate of instrumented LSF has drastically increased over the last few decades. The increased incidence of LSF, however, has led to increased reoperation rates. Methods. The data are based on the prospective LSF database of Tampere University Hospital that includes all elective indications for LSF surgery. A total of 433 consecutive patients (64% women, mean age 62 ye…
