I read with great interest the study recently published by Yamanaka and colleagues,1 reporting the results of the study aimed to pharmacologically induce b common receptor (bcR) subunit upregulation before ischemia to optimize the neuroprotective effect of erythropoietin (EPO). The authors hypothesized that bcR subunit upregulation by diazoxide (DZ) before ischemia amplifies the neuroprotective effects of EPO in mice after spinal cord injury (SCI). They reported that that optimal bcR upregulation occurred at 36 hours after DZ administration, and the optimal DZ dosage for bcR induction was 20 mg/kg. We thank doctors Park and Kang for their editorial that well summarized our article. Our common belief is that one of the possible consequences of untreated obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is an accelerated deterioration of kidney function, and that more knowledge would be necessary on the possible protective effects of OSA treatments. To our knowledge, so far the only OSA therapy whose effects on renal function have been tested is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), and most , although not all studies, have demonstrated its benefits. Protecting quantum resources via frequency modulation of qubits in leaky cavities

Finding strategies to preserve quantum resources in open systems is nowadays a main requirement for reliable quantum-enhanced technologies. We address this issue by considering structured cavities embedding qubits driven by a control technique known as frequency modulation. We first study a single qubit in a lossy cavity to determine optimal modulation parameters and qubit-cavity coupling regime allowing a gain of four orders of magnitude concerning coherence lifetimes. We relate this behavior to the inhibition of the qubit effective decay rate rather than to stronger memory effects (non-Markovianity) of the system. A comparative study of a qutrit (three-level atomic system) coupled to a classical field in a typical Markovian reservoir (free space) and in a photonic band-gap (PBG) crystal is carried out. Orange Farm, a township in South Africa, has a free-for-service voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) clinic in operation since 2008.
