Curative endoscopic resection of early esophageal adenocarcinomas (Barrett's cancer).

2005

Background In view of the increasing incidence of adenocarcinoma in Barrett's esophagus and the mortality and high morbidity rates associated with surgical therapy for this condition, safe and effective but less invasive methods of treatment are needed. Objective To evaluate efficacy and safety of endoscopic resection in these patients. Design Single-center prospective study. Setting Teaching hospital, conducted between October 1996 and September 2003. Patients A total of 100 consecutive patients (mean age, 62.1 ± 10.9 years; range, 31–86 years) with low-risk adenocarcinoma of the esophagus (macroscopic types I, IIa, IIb, and IIc; lesion diameter up to 20 mm; mucosal lesion without invasion…

Cognitive impairment: classification by 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

2004

1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) allows accurate and non-invasive in vivo metabolic study, and is a useful tool for the diagnosis of different forms of dementias. Cognitive impairment pathologies have been almost exclusively studied with MRS by comparison with healthy without a global comparison amongst Alzheimer disease (AD), vascular dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and major depression patients with cognitive impairment. Whereas decrease of N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and increase myo-Inositol (mI) at different brain locations by 1H MRS are common features of AD, Choline (Cho) alterations have been inconclusive. In our study, 64 patients with cognitive impairment were evalua…

Minimal Change Esophagitis: Prospective Comparison of Endoscopic and Histological Markers between Patients with Non-Erosive Reflux Disease and Normal…

2004

Introduction: More than half the patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) show no endoscopic abnormality or minimal change esophagitis (non-erosive reflux disease, NERD). We investigated the value of endoscopic and histological markers for the prediction of NERD before and after treatment with 20 mg esomeprazole. Methods: Between July and October 2002, consecutive patients presenting for upper endoscopy were stratified into GERD and non-reflux patients (control group) with the help of a questionnaire. The endoscopist was blind to the presence of reflux symptoms. Using magnifying endoscopes minimal change esophagitis was defined by the presen…

Gastric antisecretory drugs induce leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions through gastrin release and activation of CCK-2 receptors.

2007

Antisecretory drugs are effective antiulcer agents, but its chronic use generates hypergastrinemia and accelerates the development of atrophic gastritis in Helicobacter pylori-positive patients. We have recently shown that gastrin exerts a proinflammatory effect in rats through CCK-2 receptor activation that contributes to the inflammation induced by H. pylori. The present study was designed to examine whether gastrin hypersecretion in response to treatment with antisecretory drugs induces an inflammatory response that could promote mucosal atrophy. The effects of omeprazole or famotidine on leukocyte/endothelial cell interactions in vivo were analyzed in rat mesenteric venules using intrav…

[3H]-DA release evoked by low pH medium and internal H+ accumulation in rat hypothalamic synaptosomes: involvement of calcium ions

2003

The pH fluctuations have been often interpreted as an insufficient regulation or as a consequence of the onset of pathological events, such as ischemia, in which a significant decrease in pH levels occurs. Neurotransmitter release appears to be affected by pH drop significantly. In this study, we investigated the effect of an extracellular and an intracellular acidification on tritiated dopamine release ([3H]-DA release), from superfused rat hypothalamic synaptosomes. When compared to basal release, extracellular acidification, due to a reduction in the external pH of the nominally carbonic-free superfusion media, provoked a significant increase in [3H]-DA release that showed a sensitivenes…

Many body modes of antiproton annihilation tested with antiproton production

1992

We study the inclusive (y,¯ p) and (p,p) reactions in nuclei and check the sensitivity to the¯p annihilation mechanisms. We find that including the many body annihilation mechanisms in nuclei reduces appreciably the cross section of these reactions with respect to the evaluation considering only the one body mechanism of¯p annihilation. This shows that the¯p production reactions are more sensitive to¯p annihilation than the direct¯p annihilation reactions and makes the production experiments very useful tools to investigate the complex mechanisms of¯p annihilation in nuclei.

Statistical analysis of β decays and the effective value of gA in the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation framework

2016

We perform a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) statistical analysis of a number of measured groundstate-to-ground-state single β+/electron-capture and β− decays in the nuclear mass range of A = 62–142. The corresponding experimental comparative half-lives (log f t values) are compared with the theoretical ones obtained by the use of the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) with G-matrixbased effective interactions. The MCMC analysis is performed separately for 47 isobaric triplets and 28 more extended isobaric chains of nuclei to extract values and uncertainties for the effective axial-vector coupling constant gA in nuclear-structure calculations performed in the p…

Grand canonical rate theory for electrochemical and electrocatalytic systems I: General formulation and proton-coupled electron transfer reactions

2020

A generally valid rate theory at fixed potentials is developed to treat electrochemical and electrocatalytic potential-dependent electron, proton, and proton-coupled electron reactions. Both classical and quantum reactions in adiabatic and non-adiabatic limits are treated. The applicability and new information obtained from the theory is demonstrated for the gold catalyzed acidic Volmer reaction.
