Linear and Angular Distyrylpyrazines with Terminal Donor Groups: Synthesis, Solvatochromism, and Acidochromism of the Electronic Spectra

2011

A series of linear and angular distyrylpyrazines and lateral donor groups has been prepared by aldol condensation between dimethylpyrazines and the appropriate aromatic aldehyde. The optical absorption and emission properties of these systems were studied in different solvents and media. The materials display a strong solvatochromism of the emission that is reflected by large red shifts of their fluorescence emission maxima on increasing the solvent polarity. This behaviour suggests a highly polar emitting state, which is characteristic of compounds that undergo an internal charge transfer upon excitation. Upon protonation, the UV-vis spectra are altered, and the fluorescence intensity of t…

PEM electrolyzer characterization with carbon-based hardware and material sets

2021

Abstract The research and development of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is an upcoming and growing area due to a rising interest in hydrogen as an energy carrier. Operating conditions are harsher than in a fuel cell system, particularly because the potentials required for the oxygen evolution reaction are significantly higher. In commercial water electrolysis systems, this is compensated by typically using titanium material sets that are often protected against oxidation through coating processes. Such material choices make small scale research hardware and porous transport layers expensive and difficult to source. In this work, we show that the stability of traditional…

Synthetic nanopores with fixed charges: An electrodiffusion model for ionic transport

2003

Synthetic nanopores with fixed charges exhibit ionic equilibrium and transport properties that resemble those displayed by biological ion channels. We present an electrodiffusion model based on the Nernst-Planck flux equations, which allows for a qualitative description of the steady state ionic transport through a nanopore when the membrane fixed charges and all mobile carriers (including the water ions) are properly taken into account. In particular, we study the current-voltage curve, the electrical conductance, the reversal potential (a measure of the nanopore ionic selectivity), as well as the flux inhibition by protons and divalent cations in the nanopore. The model clearly shows how …

Effect of metallacarborane salt H[COSANE] doping on the performance properties of polybenzimidazole membranes for high temperature PEMFCs

2020

[EN] In this paper, a series of composite proton exchange membranes comprising a cobaltacarborane protonated H[Co(C2B9H11)(2)] named (H[COSANE]) and polybenzimidazole (PBI) for a high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is reported, with the aim of enhancing the proton conductivity of PBI membranes doped with phosphoric acid. The effects of the anion [Co(C2B9H11)(2)] concentration in three different polymeric matrices based on the PBI structure, poly(2,2 '-(m-phenylene)-5,5 '-bibenzimidazole) (PBI-1), poly[2,2 '-(p-oxydiphenylene)-5,5 '-bibenzimidazole] (PBI-2) and poly(2,2 '-(p-hexafluoroisopropylidene)-5,5 '-bibenzimidazole) (PBI-3), have been investigated. The conducti…

Electrochemical and Spectroelectrochemical Behavior of a Tetracyanotriphenodioxazine in Solution and Thin-Films

2018

International audience; We report the electrochemical behavior of a tetracyano triphenodioxazine bearing two triisopropylsilylethynyl moieties (TiPS‐TPDO‐tetraCN) during its reduction studied either in solution or after vacuum evaporation deposition on indium tin oxide (ITO) support. While in dichloromethane, it typically proceeds in two successive monoelectronic reactions, in acetonitrile, the mechanism appears more complex. Fine analysis of the spectroelectrochemical results combined with simulation of the voltammograms with various amount of water suggest the involvement of water and of a restructured dianion in the electrochemical process. In the solid‐state, the formation of the diprot…

Improvement in the performance of low temperature H2-O2 fuel cell with chitosanephosphotungstic acid composite membranes

2016

Abstract Free-standing chitosan/phosphotungstic acid polyelectrolyte membranes, prepared by ionotropic gelation on alumina porous supports, were employed as proton conductor in low temperature H 2 –O 2 fuel cell. A drying step on glass substrate was introduced in the fabrication procedure to reduce shrinkage and consequent corrugation. Membranes were tested with electrodes prepared according to different procedures and with two different Pt loadings, namely 0.5 and 1 mg cm −2 . Both the investigated kinds of electrodes allowed to get very promising power peaks of 550 mW cm −2 in spite of the different Pt content. The polarization curves and the electrochemical impedance spectra suggest that…

Characterization process to measure the electrical contact resistance of Gas Diffusion Layers under mechanical static compressive loads

2016

AEM2016. International conference on Advanced Energy Materials, University of Surrey, Guildford, ROYAUME-UNI, 12-/09/2016 - 14/09/2016; Recent research has identified the mechanical properties of the fuel cell internal components (in particular, the Gas Diffusion Layers - GDLs) as key-parameters to obtain high final performances of the generator. The mechanical compression modulus of these components, the stability of their mechanical properties with respect to temperature and humidity, and their ability to interact with water have an impact on the electrical contact resistances in the stack and, by consequence, on the overall performance of the electric generator. Reducing the losses by co…

Local environment of Barium, Cerium and Yttrium in BaCe1−xYxO3−δ ceramic protonic conductors

2007

Abstract Y-doped barium cerate protonic conductors with composition BaCe 1 −  x Y x O 3 −  δ ( x  = 0.02, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) have been synthesized by sol–gel route, giving by X-ray diffraction tests a homogeneous crystalline phase. A commercial sample BaCe 0.8 Y 0.2 O 3 −  δ produced by combustion spray pyrolysis was also provided for comparison aim. The local structure around the cations was studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the K-edges of Ba, Ce and Y. It is demonstrated that the insertion of yttrium in the site of cerium produces a remarkable local distortion of the dopant first-shell octahedral environment that affects also the next coordination shells by a static disorder increas…

Transport of Water and Particles in Microfluidics Devices Lithographically Fabricated Using Proton Beam Writing (PBW)

2009

Proton beam writing (PBW) is a MeV ion beam lithography technique that has gained interest in many biological applications such as fabricating microfluidic devices for Lab-On-a-Chip (LOC) applications where capillary forces are important for fluid flow. PBW has a unique capability of being able to direct-write patterns in thick (1-30µm) polymer resist layers with straight vertical sidewalls. It can be used to prepare master stamps and moulds for mass production in polymeric materials. A recent development, where the direct writing of an entire pattern element is carried out in parallel makes PBW especially well suited for Bio-MEMS LOC applications. In this study we have examined the flow dy…
