AbstractFive species of spirotrichonymphids representing three genera have been studied by light and immunofluorescence microscopy, and by transmission electron microscopy. The genus Spirotrichonympha, represented by S. flagellata from Reticulitermes grassei, is characterized by a compound axostyle composed of several fibers or subaxostyles. The genus Spironympha, represented by S. kofoidi from Reticulitermes flavipes (syn. R. santonensis) and by the two new species S. verticis and S. lanceata, is characterized by flagellar lines restricted to the anterior area and a simple, tubular axostyle. Cryptosporidium parvum, an enteropathogenic parasite, infects a wide range of mammals including man and constitutes a substantial veterinary and medical threat due to its ubiquitous distribution and the stability of the oocyst stage. The oocyst wall of C. parvum is known to be extremely resistant to chemical and mechanical disruption. Isolated oocyst walls are shown by both thin sectioning and negative staining transmission electron microscopy to possess a filamentous array on the inner surface. Die Umsetzung von 5-Phenyl-2-thiobiuret (1) mil α-Chlorcarbonylverbindungen 2 fuhrt zu den N-Phenyl-N′-(2-thiazolyl)harnstoffen (3). Unter den neuen Verbindungen finden sich besonders die entzundungshemmende, anthelminthische und trichomonazide Wirksamkeit stark ausgepragt. The reaction of 5-phenyl-2-thiobiuret (1) with α-chlorocarbonyl compounds 2 leads to the structure type of N-phenyl-N1-(thiazolyl)urea (3). The new compounds exhibit particularly antiinflammatory, anthelminthic, and trichomonacidal activity.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) caused by Leishmania infantum is endemic in the Mediterranean basin with most of the infected human patients remaining asymptomatic. Recently, the saurian-associated Leishmania tarentolae was detected in human blood donors and in sheltered dogs. The circulation of L. infantum and L. tarentolae was investigated in humans, dogs and cats living in the Pelagie islands (Sicily, Italy) by multiple serological and molecular testing. Pentamidine (Pent), an antiparasitic drug used for the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis, has been modified with terminal azide groups and conjugated to two different polymer backbones (PLGA-PEG [PP] copolymer and hyaluronic acid [HA]) armed with alkyne end-groups. The conjugation has been performed by Copper Catalyzed Azido Alkyne Cycloaddition (CuAAC) using CuSO4/sodium ascorbate as metal source. An outbreak of Trypanosoma evansi infection that occurred in mainland Spain is described. The outbreak occurred on an equine and camel farm to which dromedary camels from an infected area of the Canary Islands had recently been introduced. One of these camels developed clinical signs and T. evansi was discovered in a blood smear examination. The herd was evaluated in order to determine the extent of the disease. The results showed that 76% of the camels, 35% of the donkeys and 2% of the horses were affected. The animals were isolated and treated using Cymelarsan((R)) (0.5mg/kg). Despite its impact, very little is known about the molecular biology of the parasite involved and its interplay with its hosts.
