2018
This study investigates the association between post-secondary education and well-being in international comparative perspective, conceptualizing well-being as a capability-informed measure of flourishing. Based on a combined human capital–capability approach, post-secondary education, operationalized as highest post-secondary educational credential, is hypothesized to relate positively with well-being net of individual-level and country-level controls at both the micro and macro levels of analysis. Prominent critiques of these approaches, suggesting indirect effects through occupational sorting at the individual level and economic factors at the country level, are also explored.Beyond thes…
Elisabeth on Free Will, Preordination, and Philosophical Doubt
2021
Elisabeth is widely known as a critic of René Descartes' account of mind--body interaction and scholarly interpretations of her view on the will most often pose the question about the freedom of the will in relation to bodily impulses such as the passions. This chapter takes a different perspective and focuses on the problem of the compatibility of free will and providence, as it is discussed in a sequence of six letters that Elisabeth and Descartes wrote between September 1645 and January 1646. The chapter focuses on this specific metaphysical problem in order to ask what Elisabeth's remarks on the topic can tell about her general philosophical method as well as about her particular philos…
2014
This article looks at how the organization of the education system and the pathways leading to higher education enable social mobility or on the contrary the reproduction of inequalities. We thus compare three countries: France, Switzerland, and Canada. The results using panel data in these three countries show two different situations. The more higher education is valued rather than vocational training, the more inequalities tend to increase. The competition is such that it is the youth with a privileged social background who benefit more from its expansion. On the other hand, when the vocational education and training is more valued, inequalities in higher education could tend to be more …
Histoire de la construction de l'Etat
2022
This textbook covers the entire history of the construction of the State in France, from its medieval origins to the present day. Adopting both a thematic and chronological approach, it endeavors, for each chapter, to expose "the political state," in particular its values and their repercussions on its functioning, and "the administrative state," sometimes presented in the guise of "the administrative constitution of France".This dual approach, informed by the history of political, legal and economic ideas, reveals the ideological, constitutional and administrative foundations of our state, while measuring the evolving nature of its main defining criteria (population, territory, governmenta…
From Zeno to Chrysippus
2015
This chapter is about the origin and development of early Stoic epistemology. I discuss how Zeno of Citium, the founder of the Stoa, was influenced by his predecessors and interpreted by his successors. I argue that Stoicism rely on two basic assumptions for which Socrates is the main predecessor, namely that human beings are at home in the world and that it is only by using our rational abilities to detect salient truths and organize them into skills that we can successfully orient ourselves in this world. This Socratic-Stoic position relies on a naturalistic theory of concept acquisition, for which Aristotle is the main predecessor, or so I argue. I then look at how Zeno’s original episte…
Mikołaj Rej o Fortunie Łudarce i Zwodnicy oraz o "świeckiej krotochwili"
2018
Tematem artykułu jest problematyka związana z zagadnieniem Fortuny w twórczości Mikołaja Reja. Motyw ten w literaturze i sztuce przybierał rozmaite kształty i konwencje.
The Question of Providence and the Problem of Evil in Suhrawardī
2021
Abstract Šihāb al-Dīn al-Suhrawardī’s philosophical works seem to contain two conflicting views on providence: in the Talwīḥāt and the Mašāriʿ, he endorses the Avicennian view, only to deny providence altogether in the Ḥikmat al-išrāq. This contribution aims to explain the seeming inconsistency by investigating it in light of the underlying question of God’s knowledge of particular things. I will also argue that despite his qualms concerning providence, Suhrawardī accepts the closely related Avicennian answer to the problem of evil.
