Cat Allergy as a Source Intensification of Atopic Dermatitis in Adult Patients
2020
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is characterized by exacerbations and remissions of eczematous skin, underlain by impaired skin barrier and aberrant Th2-type and Th-22 cytokine production. A number of allergens, in particular contact with fur animals, may aggravate the disease. This study seeks to define the influence of having a regular contact with a pet cat at home on the severity of symptoms and signs of AD. We addressed the issue using the SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) and visual analog (VAS) scores to assess the intensity of pruritus and by measuring the blood content of specific IgE and IL-4, IL-13, and IL-22 cytokines. The study group consisted of 47 adult patients suffering from AD sin…
Association of asthma with extra-respiratory symptoms in schoolchildren: two cross-sectional studies 6 years apart
2002
Epidemiological information on symptoms affecting extra-respiratory organs and apparatuses in asthmatic children is scarce. The aim of this study therefore was to evaluate, at a population level, if and what extra-respiratory symptoms are associated with asthma. Two questionnaire-based, cross-sectional surveys were carried out on 1,262 students (651 males; mean age 9.57 years, age-range 6-14 years) in 1992 and on 1,210 students (639 males; mean age 9.02 years, age-range 6-14 years) in 1998, from two elementary and two junior high schools in Rome, Italy. Questionnaires included queries about asthma and its risk factors and extra-respiratory symptoms (headache, restlessness, sleep disturbance…
Novel yeast extract is superior to colloidal oatmeal in providing rapid itch relief
2020
Background Approximately, 13.5% of the population suffers from chronic itch. Many cosmetic and pharmaceutical treatments for itch are available; however, cosmetic treatments are not reliably effective and most pharmaceutical formulations carry the risk of adverse events with chronic use. Aims Previously, we have reported a novel extraction process of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, that is, Baker's yeast. The extract obtained from the novel process demonstrates superior anti-itch properties compared to other yeast extracts. In our previous study, we demonstrated that, after 30 minutes, the extract significantly reduced itch when compared to a placebo lotion (P = .002). Methods In the present stud…
Pruritus characteristics in a large Italian cohort of psoriatic patients
2019
Background: Psoriasis (Ps) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease associated with pruritus in 64–98% of patients. However, few modestly sized studies assess factors associated with psoriatic pruritus. Objective: To investigate factors associated with Ps pruritus intensity. Methods: Psoriasis patients 18 years or older seen in one of 155 centres in Italy between September 2005 and 2009 were identified from the Italian PsoCare registry. Patients without cutaneous psoriasis and those with missed information on pruritus were excluded. Results: We identified 10 802 patients, with a mean age 48.8 ± 14.3 years. Mild itch was present in 33.2% of patients, moderate in 34.4%, severe in 18.7% and ve…
Orphan symptoms in advanced cancer patients followed at home
2013
Abstract Orphan symptoms are rarely assessed, particularly at home. The aim of this multicenter prospective study was to assess the prevalence of these symptoms and eventual factors possibly associated in advanced cancer patients at admission of a home care program. A prospective study was performed at three home care programs in Italy. Patients' data were collected, including age, sex, diagnosis, and Karnofsky status. Possible contributing factors were analyzed; preexisting neurological diseases, cerebral metastases, hyperthermia, diabetes, a state of dehydration clinically evident and/or oliguria, possible biochemical parameters when available, data regarding recent chemotherapy, opioids …
Management of Toxicity Induced by Anti-EGFR Therapy in Metastatic Colorectal Cancer
2013
Use of anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (anti-EGFR) agents has yielded significant advances in the treatment of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. In fact these drugs, which include the monoclonal antibodies cetuximab and panitumumab, can be delivered both as a single agent and in combination with chemotherapy, achieving better survival and quality of life and in some cases also resectability of metastases. However, these agents can result in the development of toxicities that are usually different from those observed with chemotherapy alone. For the management of these adverse effects, proper knowledge is mandatory. Skin toxicity is the most frequent adverse effect. Other tox…
Some historical and epistemological remarks on itch and pruritus
2005
: Although very common, itch is very hard to describe. It can be considered as one of the most distressing physical sensations we experience. Going back historically, old Latin and Greek writers cited it in ancient papers. So, etymology is of central importance to investigation in the field of itch, regarding the formation of a word with antique origins and different meanings. Scientists, poets, and painters for centuries tried to describe and represent itch. The study of their work reveals the development of the itch's significance. Today, a clinically relevant distinction defines pruritus and itch as two different sensations. Moreover, some terms like hyperknesis, alloknesis, atmoknesis,…
Nodular Lesion in Cheek With a Hair Tuft
2017
Trichostasis spinulosa is a rarely diagnosed disorder of the pilosebaceous unit, characterized by retention of telogen hairs within the dilated follicles. A hair tuft can be seen protruding from the follicles. We present a case of trichostasis spinulosa associated with intradermal melanocytic nevi, where dermoscopy helps to identify this entity.
Itch in the era of COVID‐19 pandemic: An unfolding scenario
2020
Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) is an infectious disease, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)‐CoV‐2, that broke out in December 2019. In just 4 months it has spread to almost every country in the world and up to April 18, 2020, the virus has infected more than two million people. Itch is the most common symptom in dermatology and a frequent one of systemic diseases. The association of itch and viral diseases has been widely documented; however, the actual prevalence of itch in the patients suffering from new the SARS‐CoV‐2 infection is still unknown. In this paper, we present a review of the available literature on the topic of itch in the affected population. Mo…
