On Optic Aphasia and Visual Agnosia
1991
Abstract The following is a translation from a paper by Freund published in two parts almost exactly 100 years ago. It is based on a talk he gave on February 23rd, 1888 at a meeting, chaired by Wernicke, of the Society of East German Psychiatrists at Breslau. A brief report of the proceedings of the meeting appeared in the same year under the title Einige Grenzfalle zwischen Aphasie und Seelenblindheit (Some borderline cases between aphasia and agnosia) (Freund, 1888). This is presumably why the first part, published in 1889, has the heading II before its title Ueber optische Aphasie und Seelenblindheit.
To Be Continued: Serial Narration, Chronic Disease, and Disability.
2019
This article explores the representation of Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's disease in the television series The Good Wife and The Michael J. Fox Show. We suggest that serial narration offers intriguing ways to rethink the function and meaning of narratives in health contexts, and that the episodic narrative form of television series may afford insights into the structure of medical encounters. Specifically, we examine to what extent serial narration, with its focus on continuity and repetition, might help reimagine the typical narrative of decline, which is implicit in the terminology of neurodegeneration, as well as the narrative of (premature) closure or finitude that often accompanies a di…
Social movements and the contested institutional identity of the hospital
2020
Taking popular protest as a common reaction to changes in hospital services as its point of departure, this paper explores how a social movement has taken on the issue of the hospital as an institution. In the wake of the transformation of Norwegian public hospitals into health enterprises (trusts), this paper explores community resistance to the proposals and plans of decision-makers to restructure hospitals. The study is based on a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the website/blog for the local hospital movement's activities from 2007 until 2017 and of its involvement and resistance in respect of three instances of proposed change to the hospital structure during this period. The …
Re-Imagining the Border: Border Art as a Space of Critical Imagination and Creative Resistance
2014
Contemporary world is increasingly marked by borders, fences and walls, which run through the spaces we live in. Borders are the result of a composite articulation of material aspects, concerning their external realisation, and structures of imagination, symbolic constructs and conceptual formations that involve the border and make it meaningful. In this dynamic and mutable field, artistic practices and interventions can interrupt and alterate the logic of the border, opening up a space of resistance and critical imagination, where the transparent, immutable and essentialist representation of the border is constantly challenged. Works of artists such as Bajevic, Hatoum, Salcedo, Rosver and …
Brazil, Russia, and Turkey: How New Democracies Deal with International Models of Higher Education?
2019
The purpose of this chapter is to address the issue of national translations of international influences and trends in higher education systems, as well as resistance to such paradigms. Three emerging countries, that is, Brazil, Russia, and Turkey, with very different geographical and historical contexts, will be considered as case studies. As young democracies, their strong national sentiment can contradict external recommendations in terms of the management of higher education.

Revista complutense de educación
2014
