COSMOPOLITAN HABITAT WORKSHOP

2021

The Cosmopolitan Habitat workshop invites international PhD candidates, students, young scientists, academics, and urban planning and design professionals to discuss and reflect on the spatial dimension of migration, the different human cultures that increasingly characterize European cities, and new living spaces in the project area, the historic centre of Palermo. The students, together with young urban planning and design scientists, are asked to discover potentialities for Cosmopolitan Habitat in Palermo and design new future scenarios. The paper reports the outcomes of the workshop.

Zaangażowanie muzeum w proces komunikowania o zmianie klimatu

2019

In this paper I addressed the issue of the engagement of museums in climate change. The problem of climate change is so important in the current social context that, despite its difficult political connotations, it cannot be ignored by museums, especially if we consider a museum as an element of a public sphere. Climate change is a challenge in 21st century. Climate change will present challenges that are of long-term nature, multidimensional and global phenomenon. It could impact directly on museums. I assume museums can provide a safe place for dialogue around climate change. Museums can also inform publics about the science of climate change and help to equip people with knowledge, shape…

Muzeum jako instytucja odpowiedzialna społecznie. Rola muzeum w debacie na temat zmian klimatycznych

2019

Challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic and design responses in public space: Towards strategies for resilient post-Covid cities

2022

The Covid-19 pandemic triggered governments and designers to revalue and redesign public spaces. This paper focuses on the various design responses to Covid-19 proposed and implemented in public spaces. In particular, we identify the kinds of challenges that such design responses address and the strategies that they use. We selected 56 design examples, largely collected from internet sources. By analyzing the design examples we identified five Covid-related challenges that were addressed in public space: sustaining amenities, keeping a distance, feeling connected, staying mentally healthy, and expanding health infrastructures. For each challenge, we articulated 2 to 6 design strategies. The…

DEMOSPACES: DEMOcratic Spatial Practices for ACtive and Engaged Societies

2020

The Covid-19 pandemic impacted on the population in unprecedented terms, both for its economic and for its socio-spatial implications. Social distancing measures and restrictions on the use of public spaces are permanently changing our relationship with urban spaces. At the same time, space also represents a crucial dimension in the construction of policies for preventing, managing and contrasting the spread of the virus. Therefore, this chapter describes a proposal the authors are currently working on, regarding the creation of “DEMOSPACES” (DEMOcratic Spatial Practices for ACtive and Engaged Societies). This project aims to explore how personal and collective safety and the need for socia…

Effectiveness of using EU funds in modelling the public and private spaces - examples of good practice

2015

“Serpentone Reload” an Experience of Citizens Involvement in Regeneration of Peripheral Urban Spaces

2015

Suburbs are often very contradictory places. Despite great part of urban population live there, these parts of cities are mostly considered as degradation places. The topic of suburbs regeneration is relevant today. Nevertheless, often expensive interventions implemented by local authorities fail to regenerate their public spaces. This paper presents the experience of “Serpentone reload”, a workshop based on participatory reactivation of abandoned or underused spaces and buildings in “Cocuzzo/Serpentone” neighbourhood in Potenza (Basilicata, Italy). The workshop particularly focused on the reuse of the “Ship”, an underground building, completed in 2010, never used, because it has been perce…

Erraticism and multicultural permeability of urban fabric in Palermo

2017

Interactions between physical and social space draw different urban dimensions, or cultural landscape mosaics, which constantly change and evolve. The shape of the city promotes or discourages multiculturalism and social relations. The latter, in turn, reverberate in the way in which urban space is used, not only to meet basic needs - dictated by reason of survival (housing, employment, and services for education, care, leisure, etc.), but also because the inhabitants are driven by the desire for happiness and the simultaneous meeting that Lefebvre described as the “individualization in socialization”. Migrants groups have historically inhabited the central areas of cities, initially approp…

Environment in Megacities: Tehran Waterscapes

2021

Defining contemporary urban paradigms is the challenge of this time, especially when the urban dynamics are so fluid they spread uncontrollably in overextended and overpopulated territories. This is the case for megacities, metropolitan areas with more than 10 million inhabitants, which place the emphasis on how to manage energy consumption in such filled places. In this frame, the city of Tehran, the capital of the Islamic Republic of Iran, scene of political and cultural disputes, administrative and economic headquarter of the country, with its nearly 15 million residents and a daily traffic of more than 20 million people, is currently one of the most populous cities in the world and repr…
