A multifuctional nanoplatform for drug targeted delivery based on radiation-engineered nanogels
2020
Abstract Under a rational design, combining biologically active molecules, ligands to specific cell receptors and fluorescent, radioactive or paramagnetic labels into a single nano-object can bridge the unique properties of the individual components and improve conventional sensing, imaging and therapeutic efficacies. The validation of these functional nano-objects requires careful testing both in terms of physico-chemical properties and biological behaviour in vitro and in vivo, prior to translation into the clinic. Ionising radiation of aqueous polymer solutions is a viable strategy to produce multifunctional nanogels from aqueous solutions of hydrophilic polymers. By proper selection of …
Pulse EPR methods for studying chemical and biological samples containing transition metals
2006
This review discusses the application of pulse EPR to the characterization of disordered systems, with an emphasis on samples containing transition metals. Electron nuclear double-resonance (ENDOR), electron-spin-echo envelope-modulation (ESEEM), and double electron-electron resonance (DEER) methodologies are outlined. The theory of field modulation is outlined, and its application is illustrated with DEER experiments. The simulation of powder spectra in EPR is discussed, and strategies for optimization are given. The implementation of this armory of techniques is demonstrated on a rich variety of chemical systems: several porphyrin derivatives that are found in proteins and used as model s…
Shaping of a ground state rotational wavepacket by frequency-chirped pulses
2001
0953-4075; A coherent rotational superposition state is produced in the ground vibronic level of N2 through the interaction of the molecule with the electric field vector of a nonresonant laser pulse. This rotational wavepacket is shaped with a linear frequency chirp of the laser field. The structural shape of the rotational coherences shows a strong dependence with the frequency-chirp amplitude. A comparison with a theoretical model allows the interpretation of the observed effects in terms of dephasing of the wavepacket induced by the laser phase distortion. Application of the presented results to the phase characterization of short XUV pulses is suggested.
Identification of inorganic pigments from paintings and polychromed sculptures immobilized into polymer film electrodes by stripping differential pul…
2000
Abstract Inorganic pigments in paintings and polychromed sculptures are studied by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse stripping voltammetry using micro-sample coatings in Paraloid B72-film modified electrodes. Characteristic cathodic and anodic differential pulse profiles were obtained in the +0.4 to −1.0 V vs. SCE potential range for different cadmium, copper, lead, mercury and zinc pigments used in traditional colour palettes. Under optimized conditions, excellent reproducibility was obtained. Microsamples extracted from polychromed sculptures, wall paintings, canvas paintings, panel paintings and altarpieces from Spain, Ethiopia and Italy from the 12th to the 20th centuries have b…
X-Ray Diffraction and Multifrequency EPR Study of Radiation-Induced Room Temperature Stable Radicals in Octacalcium Phosphate.
2020
Octacalcium phosphate (OCP) {Ca8H2(PO4)6×5H2O] has attracted increasing attention over the last decade as a transient intermediate to the biogenic apatite for bone engineering and in studies involving the processes of pathological calcification. In this work, OCP powders obtained by hydrolysis of dicalcium phosphate dehydrate were subjected to X- and γ-ray irradiation and studied by means of stationary and pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance at 9, 36 and 94 GHz microwave frequencies. Several types of paramagnetic centers were observed in the investigated samples. Their spectroscopic parameters (components of the g and hyperfine tensors) were determined. Based on the extracted parameters,…
An Update of the Evolving Epidemic of blaKPC Carrying Klebsiella pneumoniae in Sicily, Italy, 2014: Emergence of Multiple Non-ST258 Clones
2015
Background: In Italy, Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase producing K. pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) strains are highly endemic and KPC producing CC258 is reported as the widely predominating clone. In Palermo, Italy, previous reports have confirmed this pattern. However, recent preliminary findings suggest that an epidemiological change is likely ongoing towards a polyclonal KPC-Kp spread. Here we present the results of molecular typing of 94 carbapenem non susceptible K. pneumoniae isolates detected during 2014 in the three different hospitals in Palermo, Italy. Methods and Results: Ninety-four consecutive, non replicate carbapenem non susceptible isolates were identified in the three largest acute…
Cardiac output following fetoscopic coagulation of major placental vessels in fetal sheep.
2008
Objectives To measure changes in cardiac output (CO) after partial cord occlusion in fetal sheep in order to investigate pathophysiological fetal adaptation mechanisms in a simulated acute placental insufficiency model under standardized conditions, with the aim of finding relevant methods for monitoring human fetuses during stress situations. Methods We used minimally invasive, percutaneous endoscopic techniques to close umbilical vessels in mid-gestational fetal sheep. Placental blood flow was reduced by preferentially closing first arterial and then the concomitant venous umbilical vessels within a short time interval. The investigations were carried out on 11 pregnant ewes at a median g…
Comparison between doppler-echocardiography and uncalibrated pulse contour method for cardiac output measurement. a multicenter observational study
2016
Objectives: Echocardiography and pulse contour methods allow, respectively, noninvasive and less invasive cardiac output estimation. The aim of the present study was to compare Doppler echocardiography with the pulse contour method MostCare for cardiac output estimation in a large and nonselected critically ill population. Design: A prospective multicenter observational comparison study. Setting: The study was conducted in 15 European medicosurgical ICUs. Patients: We assessed cardiac output in 400 patients in whom an echocardiographic evaluation was performed as a routine need or for cardiocirculatory assessment. Interventions: None. Measurements and Main Results: One echocardiographic car…
Effect of Supplemental Oxygen versus Dobutamine Administration on Liver Oxygen Tension in dPP-Guided Normovolemic Pigs
2008
<i>Background:</i> Difference in pulse pressure (dPP) confirms adequate intravascular filling as a prerequisite for tissue perfusion. We hypothesized that both oxygen and dobutamine increase liver tissue oxygen tension (pt<i>O</i>2). <i>Methods:</i> Eight anesthetized pigs received dPP-guided fluid management. Hepatic p<i>O</i>2 was measured with Clark-type electrodes placed subcapsularly, and on the liver surface. Pigs received: (1) supplemental oxygen (Fi<i>O</i>2 1.0); (2) dobutamine 2.5 μg/kg/min, and (3) dobutamine 5 μg/kg/min. Data wer…
Modified electrocardiograph-triggered black-blood turbo spin-echo technique to improve T1-weighting in contrast-enhanced MRI of atherosclerotic carot…
2008
Purpose To assess the efficacy of a modified electrocardiograph (EKG)-triggered black-blood T1W (T1W) spin-echo sequence in improving contrast on post-gadolinium high-resolution carotid plaque imaging by implementing heart-rate–independent contrast preparation. Materials and Methods We used a standard EKG-triggered double inversion-recovery (DIR) turbo spin-echo (TSE) sequence modified with the addition of an extra saturation (90°) radio frequency (RF) pulse placed immediately after the DIR module, shortening the repetition time to a fixed value of 400 msec. A total of 10 patients with atherosclerotic disease were included in the study. Postinjection intraplaque contrast measurements were p…
