Counter-propagating difference frequency mixing in diamond with terahertz waves

2013

We investigate four-wave mixing between terahertz and optical pulses in diamond. We observe the occurrence of sum and difference frequency generation, with the latter being phase-matched for terahertz pulses counter-propagating to the optical field.

Nonlinear effects in optical pumping of a cold and slow atomic beam

2015

By photoionizing hyperfine (HF) levels of the Cs state $6{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}{P}_{3/2}$ in a slow and cold atom beam, we find how their population depends on the excitation laser power. The long time (around $180\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s})$ spent by the slow atoms inside the resonant laser beam is large enough to enable exploration of a unique atom-light interaction regime heavily affected by time-dependent optical pumping. We demonstrate that, under such conditions, the onset of nonlinear effects in the population dynamics and optical pumping occurs at excitation laser intensities much smaller than the conventional respective saturation values. The ev…

Optical pumping and unstable nuclei

1985

The paper reviews the application of optical pumping to short-lived nuclei, where either the nuclear polarisation is detected by the β-decay asymmetry or the atomic polarisation by Stern-Gerlach-analyzer. Moreover the paper deals with collinear laser spectroscopy on beams of short-lived, mass-separated isotopes. The aim of the experiments is the systematic investigation of nuclear structure through the determination of spin, moments and charge radii from the hyperfine structure and isotopic shift of the atomic spectra. The impact of these experiments on the theory of nuclear forces and structure is discussed by means of a few examples.

Formations of finite monoids and formal languages: Eilenberg’s variety theorem revisited

2014

International audience; We present an extension of Eilenberg's variety theorem, a well-known result connecting algebra to formal languages. We prove that there is a bijective correspondence between formations of finite monoids and certain classes of languages, the formations of languages. Our result permits to treat classes of finite monoids which are not necessarily closed under taking submonoids, contrary to the original theory. We also prove a similar result for ordered monoids.; Nous présentons une extension du théorème des variétés d'Eilenberg, un résultat célèbre reliant l'algèbre à la théorie des langages formels. Nous montrons qu'il existe une correspondance bijective entre les form…

1.3 µm GaInNAs optically-pumped vertical cavity semiconductor optical amplifier

2003

A GaInNAs/GaAs vertical cavity semiconductor optical amplifier (VCSOA) is reported. This is believed to be the first monolithic VCSOA operating at 1.3 mum. Under continuous-wave optical pumping in a singlemode fibre coupled format, gain figures of up to 17.7 dB were achieved. Amplification with 12 GHz bandwidth, was obtained at 12.8 dB peak gain.

Influence of pump coherence on the dynamic behavior of a laser

1988

The dynamic behavior of a coherently pumped single-mode unidirectional ring laser with a homogeneously broadened three-level active medium is studied. Our formulation is based on a set often real equations of the plane-wave, mean-field Maxwell–Bloch type. The instability domain in the main control parameters space is determined. Our numerical study of these equations for a parameter range of the type explored in the recent experiments by Weiss Brock [ Phys. Rev. Lett.57, 2804 ( 1986)] reveals some similarities, but striking differences between our theoretical predictions and their experimental observations are also noted.

Phase-conjugate emission of a two-mirror solid state laser

2002

We show that phase conjugation strongly contributes to the emission of a solid state laser in a two-mirror (Fabry-Perot) resonator , enabling dynamic correction of thermal lensing . Full correction of thermal effects is reached by vector phase conjugation .

Element-specific ferromagnetic resonance in epitaxial Heusler spin valve systems

2011

Time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism was used to investigate epitaxial MgO(100)/Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al and MgO(100)/Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al/Cr/CoFe films. The precessional motion of the individual sublattice magnetization, excited by continuous microwave excitation in the range 2–10 GHz, was detected by tuning the x-ray photon energy to the L 3 absorption edges of Cr, Fe and Co. The relative phase angle of the sublattice magnetization's response is smaller than the detection limit of 2°. A weakly antiferromagnetically coupled CoFe layer causes an increase in the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth consisting of a constant offset and a component linearly increasing with frequency that we partly at…

Room temperature antiferromagnetic resonance and inverse spin-Hall voltage in canted antiferromagnets

2021

We study theoretically and experimentally the spin pumping signals induced by the resonance of canted antiferromagnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and demonstrate that they can generate easily observable inverse spin-Hall voltages. Using a bilayer of hematite/heavy metal as a model system, we measure at room temperature the antiferromagnetic resonance and an associated inverse spin-Hall voltage, as large as in collinear antiferromagnets. As expected for coherent spin pumping, we observe that the sign of the inverse spin-Hall voltage provides direct information about the mode handedness as deduced by comparing hematite, chromium oxide and the ferrimagnet yttrium-iron garnet. Our r…
