Slow pyrolysis of an LDPE/PP mixture: Kinetics and process performance

2021

Abstract High- and low-density polyethylene (HDPE and LDPE) and polypropylene (PP) are the most common polymers among plastic waste as they have multiple commercial applications. This study focused on thermal degradation characteristics and kinetic of a plastic mixture with a composition of 92.5 wt% LDPE and 7.5% PP. Thermal decomposition characteristics of the plastic mixture was analysed through thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). The overall kinetic of the process was studied using the modified Coats−Redfern method and the Ozawa-Flynn-Wall (OFW) method. The apparent activation energy (E) and pre-exponential factor (A) obtained were 316.0 kJ/mol; 8.09E+21 min−1 and 311.5 kJ/mol; 4.35E+21 m…

Spray pyrolysis synthesis and characterization of Mg1-xSrxMoO4 heterostructure with white light emission

2020

[EN] Molybdates are inorganic materials with great potential in white phosphors application, being an alternative to traditional lighting sources. In this study, we report the synthesis and characterization of Mg1-xSrxMoO4 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1) powders with white light-emitting properties. Using X-ray diffraction, the formation of the monoclinic beta-MgMoO4 phase was observed for x = 0 and the formation of the tetragonal scheelite phase of SrMoO4 was observed for x = 1. The formation of a heterostructure composed of both phases was found for compositions with x = 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75. Scanning and trasmission electron microscopy images showed that the Mg1-xSrxMoO4 particles exhibi…

Pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry of cured phenolic resins.

2003

A previously described pyrolysis device with a movable reaction zone was used in the present work for thermal degradation of cured novolac and resol resins. After the pyrolysis the usual major components were identified, as well as relatively low-volatile aromatic compounds which were revealed after their separation in a capillary chromatographic column. Among the latter components, for both types of cured resins, xanthene and its methyl derivatives were found. The isomers of bis(hydroxyphenyl)methane were found in considerable quantities only in the case of partially cured novolac resins which contained any linear sequences in their structure.

Influence of Elevated Pressure on the Torrefaction of Wood

2016

The use of pressurized reactors in industrial processes can improve efficiency and economics. Torrefaction is a partial pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass designed to result in a solid product with improved fuel properties for utilization in combustion and gasification. In this work, the influence of elevated pressure on the torrefaction of wood has been investigated. Wood samples were torrefied using a pressurized thermogravimetric reactor (PTGR) with pressures of 0.1 to 2.1 MPa. The results indicate that reactor pressure, particle size of feedstock, and wood species are all factors in torrefaction yield improvements. Torrefaction at 2.1 MPa pressure improved the higher heating value (ca…

Isolation of soil lignins by combination of ball-milling and cellulolysis: Evaluation of purity and isolation efficiency with pyrolysis/GC/MS

2009

Abstract CuO oxidation is traditionally used for soil lignin study, although, like other degradation methods it might give access only to a part of the lignin polymers. For structural characterization, lignins are conventionally isolated from plant material by combining ball-milling, cellulolysis and solvent extraction to recover a milled wall enzymatic lignin (MWEL) fraction. This method might isolate condensed lignins, which are not accounted for CuO oxidation. MWELs are still associated with polysaccharides. This study aimed to evaluate if the MWEL method can be used complementary to CuO oxidation for soil lignin studies. We assessed the purity of isolated lignins by pyrolytic characteri…

Torrefaction and pyrolysis of metal-enriched poplars from phytotechnologies: Effect of temperature and biomass chlorine content on metal distribution…

2017

Abstract Torrefaction (290 °C) and pyrolysis (450 and 800 °C) trials were performed at pilot scale with a patented reactor on metal-enriched poplars from a contaminated soil managed by phytotechnologies and poplars cultivated on uncontaminated soil, for comparison. This study emphasized the influence of temperature on end-product yield, metal distribution in end-products and metal behavior. Results showed that the evolution of the end-product yield, i.e. biochar, bio-oil and gas fractions, was depending on temperature rather than other parameters such as the origin or metal content of the tested poplars. Torrefaction decreased the processed poplars weight, leading to metal-enriched torrefie…

Pyrolysis-gas chromatography : mass spectrometry analysis of di- and triterpenoids

2017

The objective of this work was to study a specific class of extractives existing in lignocellulosic biomass and more precisely in wood materials, and their thermochemical behavior during pyrolysis. The focus was centered on the class of terpenes and terpenoids; specifically two model compounds, abietic acid and betulinol, were chosen to represent the subclasses of di- and triterpenoids, respectively. The model compounds were investigated via pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and the main objective was to study their product profiles and characteristic fragmentations, as well as the influence of specific variables (pyrolysis temperature and time) on pyrolysis products…

Pyrolysis of Tall Oil-Derived Fatty and Resin Acid Mixtures

2012

Neutralised mixtures of tall oil-derived fatty acids and resin acids were separately pyrolysed (at 750∘C for 20 s) by pyrolysis gas chromatography with mass-selective and flame ionisation detection (Py-GC/MSD/FID) to clarify their thermochemical behaviour. The pyrolysate of fatty acid salts characteristically contained high amounts of unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons and minor amounts of monoaromatics, whereas the pyrolysis of resin acid salts mainly resulted in the formation of aromatics with up to three benzene rings and only in very low amounts of aliphatic hydrocarbons. The data obtained are useful when considering the suitability of various tall oil products containing fatty and resi…
