Large-Scale Candidate Gene Analysis in Whites and African Americans Identifies IL6R Polymorphism in Relation to Atrial Fibrillation The National Hear…

2011

Background— The genetic background of atrial fibrillation (AF) in whites and African Americans is largely unknown. Genes in cardiovascular pathways have not been systematically investigated. Methods and Results— We examined a panel of approximately 50 000 common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 2095 cardiovascular candidate genes and AF in 3 cohorts with participants of European (n=18 524; 2260 cases) or African American descent (n=3662; 263 cases) in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's Candidate Gene Association Resource. Results in whites were followed up in the German Competence Network for AF (n=906, 468 cases). The top result was assessed in relation to incident i…

Measurable Residual Disease (MRD) Monitoring in Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) with t(8;21)(q22;q22.1) RUNX1-RUNX1T1 Identifies Patients at High Risk o…

2019

Background: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with t(8;21)(q22;q22.1) resulting in the RUNX1-RUNX1T1 gene fusion is considered favorable in the 2017 genetic risk stratification by the European LeukemiaNet (ELN). After intensive chemotherapy most patients (pts) achieve complete remission (CR), but relapse occurs in about 50% and is associated with poor prognosis. In this AML subgroup monitoring of measurable residual disease (MRD) has been shown to identify pts at higher risk of relapse. Aims: To assess the prognostic impact of MRD monitoring in bone marrow (BM) and peripheral blood (PB) in a large cohort of 155 clinically well-annotated t(8;21)-AML pts enrolled in one of six AMLSG treatment tria…

On time-harmonic Maxwell equations with nonhomogeneous conductivities : Solvability and FE-approximation

1989

The solvability of time-harmonic Maxwell equations in the 3D-case with nonhomogeneous conductivities is considered by adapting Sobolev space technique and variational formulation of the probJem in question. Moreover, a finite element approximation is presented in the 3D·case together with an error estimate in the energy norm. Some remarks are given to the 2D-problem arising from geophysics. peerReviewed

Economic Sustainability of Italian Greenhouse Cherry Tomato

2014

Greenhouse tomato cultivation plays an important role in Sicily, being the primary production area in Italy, due to its favorable pedo-climatic conditions that permit extra-seasonal productions. In Sicily, more than half of greenhouse tomato production is derived from the Province of Ragusa on the southeastern coast, where especially cherry tomato typologies are cultivated. Over the last decade, the Ragusa Province has registered a decrease both in terms of greenhouse tomato area and harvested production due to several structural problems that would require restructuring of the tomato supply chain. Thus, since recognition of real costs and profitability of tomato growing is a vital issue, b…

Large-scale genotyping identifies 41 new loci associated with breast cancer risk

2013

Journal article Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. Common variants at 27 loci have been identified as associated with susceptibility to breast cancer, and these account for ~9% of the familial risk of the disease. We report here a meta-analysis of 9 genome-wide association studies, including 10,052 breast cancer cases and 12,575 controls of European ancestry, from which we selected 29,807 SNPs for further genotyping. These SNPs were genotyped in 45,290 cases and 41,880 controls of European ancestry from 41 studies in the Breast Cancer Association Consortium (BCAC). The SNPs were genotyped as part of a collaborative genotyping experiment involving four consortia (Collaborat…

CAP POLICY DIMENSIONS: A CATALYST FOR COLLABORATION AND SUSTAINABLE CHANGES

2015

A great challenge to EU livestock production markets is the growing production price and the farmers' income variability. The public request for traceability and accountability determined the EU agri-food policy to implement new sustainable reform. In this paper the author identified a set of inputs and impacts of CAP sustainable reform on livestock system.International major competitors are assessed to benchmark the competitiviness of EU agri-food industry.

Numerical Recovery of Source Singularities via the Radiative Transfer Equation with Partial Data

2013

The inverse source problem for the radiative transfer equation is considered, with partial data. Here we demonstrate numerical computation of the normal operator $X_{V}^{*}X_{V}$ where $X_{V}$ is the partial data solution operator to the radiative transfer equation. The numerical scheme is based in part on a forward solver designed by F. Monard and G. Bal. We will see that one can detect quite well the visible singularities of an internal optical source $f$ for generic anisotropic $k$ and $\sigma$, with or without noise added to the accessible data $X_{V}f$. In particular, we use a truncated Neumann series to estimate $X_{V}$ and $X_{V}^{*}$, which provides a good approximation of $X_{V}^{*…
