Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) can be considered as the standard treatment for patients suffering from heart failure (NYHA III–IV), severely reduced left ventricular (LV) function, and wide QRS complexes. Over the past years, the lead systems used to stimulate the left ventricle have evolved technically from epicardial approaches to a transvenous access accompanied by a significant reduction of procedure-related complication rates [1]. Non-crossing parametric quantile functions: an application to extreme temperatures

Quantile regression can be used to obtain a non-parametric estimate of a conditional quantile function. The presence of quantile crossing, however, leads to an invalid distribution of the response and makes it difficult to use the fitted model for prediction. In this work, we show that crossing can be alleviated by modelling the quantile function parametrically. We then describe an algorithm for constrained optimisation that can be used to estimate parametric quantile functions with the noncrossing property. We investigate climate change by modelling the long-term trends of extreme temperatures in the Arctic Circle.

Luminescence and absorption spectroscopy of Sn-related impurity centers in silica

We report an experimental study on the absorption and luminescence spectra of oxygen deficient point defects in Sn-doped silica. The absorption band at 4.9 eV (B2β band) and the two related photoluminescence bands at ∼4.2 eV (singlet-singlet emission, S1 → S0) and at ∼3.2 eV (triplet-singlet emission, T1 → S0), linked by a thermally activated T1 → S1 inter-system crossing process (ISC), are studied as a function of temperature from 300 to 20 K. Abstract Background A bacterial strain previously isolated from pyrite mine drainage and named BAS-10 was tentatively identified as Klebsiella oxytoca. Unlikely other enterobacteria, BAS-10 is able to grow on Fe(III)-citrate as sole carbon and energy source, yielding acetic acid and CO2 coupled with Fe(III) reduction to Fe(II) and showing unusual physiological characteristics.
