Luminescence of silicon Dioxide — silica glass, α-quartz and stishovite

Abstract This paper compares the luminescence of different modifications of silicon dioxide — silica glass, α-quartz crystal and dense octahedron structured stishovite crystal. Under x-ray irradiation of pure silica glass and pure α-quartz crystal, only the luminescence of self-trapped exciton (STE) is detected, excitable only in the range of intrinsic absorption. No STE luminescence was detected in stishovite since, even though its luminescence is excitable below the optical gap, it could not be ascribed to a self-trapped exciton. Nanoparticle exposure is monitored by a combination of two label-free and non-invasive biosensor devices which detect cellular shape and viscoelasticity (quartz crystal microbalance), cell motility and the dynamics of epithelial cell-cell contacts (electric cell-substrate impedance sensing). With these tools we have studied the impact of nanoparticle shape on cellular physiology. Gold (Au) nanoparticles coated with CTAB were synthesized and studied in two distinct shapes: Spheres with a diameter of (43 ± 4) nm and rods with a size of (38 ± 7) nm × (17 ± 3) nm. Enzymatic Synthesis and Surface Deposition of Tin Dioxide using Silicatein-α

Nanostructured tin dioxide was synthesized by making use of the catalytic activity of silicatein-α. TEM, HRTEM, and XRD revealed the formation of cassiterite SnO2. Surface bound silicatein retains its biocatalytic activity. This was demonstrated by immobilizing silicatein on glass surfaces using a histidine-tag chelating anchor. The subsequent deposition of SnO2 on glass was monitored by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This new aspect of silicatein activity toward the formation of metal oxides other than SiO2, TiO2, and BaTiO3 opens up new vistas in composite material synthesis.

TSL and fractional glow study of Ge-doped α-quartz

Crystalline α-quartz doped with 0.1wt% and 0.9wt% germanium was studied using TSL and FGT equipment. Sample was chosen because previously it is known that Ge in quartz is efficient trap for electrons, therefore it could be used for detection of hypothetic self-trapped hole in α-quartz. However previous investigations of ODMR and TSL shows that in α-quartz the hole is still mobile and trapping occurs only on defect states. The activation energies for both TSL peaks are found by fractional glow and Hoogenstraaten method. The TSL distribution changes depending on Ge concentration and also on irradiation type. The TSL peaks below 70K in quartz doped with Ge could belong to hole trapped on Ge.

White micas coexisting with albite, quartz, chlorite, and clinozoisite in low-grade schists of the Beaume Valley (Massif Central, France) have been analyzed by standard microprobe techniques. As the micas of an albite-rich thin section show significantly higher Na-contents than those of an albite-poor one of the same rock sample, the application of the muscovite-albite-geothermometer results in inconsistent temperature values. Thus the analyses may indicate that the distribution of sodium between coexisting white micas and albite not only depends on temperature and pressure but also on the chemical potentials of the alkalies in the metamorphic fluid phase.

The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) technique is an emerging bioanalytical tool to study the behavior of animal cells in vitro. Due to the high interfacial sensitivity of thickness shear mode (TSM) resonators it is possible to monitor the formation and breakage of cell-matrix interactions and changes in viscoelasticity of the cell bodies, as well as minute cell volume alterations by the time course of their resonance frequency even with millisecond time resolution. Abstract The concentrations of minerals and trace elements in the Lokpanta oil shale from the Lower Benue Trough, Nigeria have been determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), respectively. X-ray diffraction data were evaluated using the SIROQUANT™ interactive data processing system based on Rietveld interpretation methods. A new method of trace element determination in oil shale, involving LA-ICP-MS analysis of glass beads prepared by fusing oil shale ash on an iridium strip heater was used, and the accuracy of the method was assessed by including a standard shale reference material (SGR-1b) in the analysis program.
