Coherent manipulation of three-qubit states in a molecular single-ion magnet

2017

We study the quantum spin dynamics of nearly isotropic Gd3+ ions entrapped in polyoxometalate molecules and diluted in crystals of a diamagnetic Y3+ derivative. The full energy-level spectrum and the orientations of the magnetic anisotropy axes have been determined by means of continuous-wave electron paramagnetic resonance experiments, using X-band (9-10 GHz) cavities and on-chip superconducting waveguides and 1.5-GHz resonators. The results show that seven allowed transitions between the 2S+1 spin states can be separately addressed. Spin coherence T2 and spin-lattice relaxation T1 rates have been measured for each of these transitions in properly oriented single crystals. The results sugg…

Hybrid quantum repeater for qudits

2017

We present a "hybrid quantum repeater" protocol for the long-distance distribution of atomic entangled states beyond qubits. In our scheme, imperfect noisy entangled pairs of two qudits, i.e., two discrete-variable $d$-level systems, each of, in principle, arbitrary dimension $d$, are initially shared between the intermediate stations of the channel. This is achieved via local, sufficiently strong light-matter interactions, involving optical coherent states and their transmission after these interactions, and optical measurements on the transmitted field modes, especially (but not restricted to) efficient continuous-variable homodyne detections ("hybrid" here refers to the simultaneous expl…

Time-optimal control of the purification of a qubit in contact with a structured environment

2019

We investigate the time-optimal control of the purification of a qubit interacting with a structured environment, consisting of a strongly coupled two-level defect in interaction with a thermal bath. On the basis of a geometric analysis, we show for weak and strong interaction strengths that the optimal control strategy corresponds to a qubit in resonance with the reservoir mode. We investigate under which conditions qubit coherence and correlation between the qubit and the environment can speed up the control process.

Fundaments of photoelectric readout of spin states in diamond

2021

Abstract The chapter “Fundaments of photoelectric readout of spin states in diamond” deals with the detection of NV centre spins in diamond using the photoelectric detection of magnetic resonances (PDMR) method, introduced in a series of recent publications. It provides in particular insights into the physics of electronic transitions of the NV center, leading to the free carrier generation, and discusses methodologies how to implement the photocurrent detection principles in the dynamically evolving field of quantum technologies. Recent results on the single electron and the single nuclear spin qubits photoelectric readout are presented, along with a microwave-free NV magnetometry techniqu…

Design of Magnetic Polyoxometalates for Molecular Spintronics and as Spin Qubits

2017

Abstract In the past decades, POMs have been used as minimal models in Molecular Magnetism, since they are a convenient playing ground to study fundamental phenomena such as anisotropic magnetic exchange and electron transfer. Now they have jumped to the stage of the rational design of single-ion magnets and are being considered as test subjects for simple experiments in Single-Molecule Spintronics and Molecular Quantum Computing. This chapter contains an overview of recent results that demonstrate the potential of POMs in these emerging fields.

Spin-echo entanglement protection from random telegraph noise

2014

We analyze local spin-echo procedures to protect entanglement between two non-interacting qubits, each subject to pure-dephasing random telegraph noise. For superconducting qubits this simple model captures characteristic features of the effect of bistable impurities coupled to the device. An analytic expression for the entanglement dynamics is reported. Peculiar features related to the non-Gaussian nature of the noise already observed in the single qubit dynamics also occur in the entanglement dynamics for proper values of the ratio $g=v/\gamma$, between the qubit-impurity coupling strength and the switching rate of the random telegraph process, and of the separation between the pulses $\D…

Characterisation of Cooper Pair Boxes for Quantum Bits

2001

We have fabricated and measured single Cooper pair boxes (SCB) using superconducting single electron transistors (SET) as electrometers. The box storage performance for Cooper pairs was measured by observing the changes in the SCB island potential. We are also fabricating niobium structures, which are expected to have less problems with quasiparticle contamination than similar aluminium based devices because of the high critical temperature. The use of niobium may also reduce decoherence and thereby increase the time available for quantum logic operations.

Theoretical analysis of a realistic atom-chip quantum gate

2006

9 pages, 5 color figures; International audience; We present a detailed, realistic analysis of the implementation of a proposal for a quantum phase gate based on atomic vibrational states, specializing it to neutral rubidium atoms on atom chips. We show how to create a double-well potential with static currents on the atom chips, using for all relevant parameters values that are achieved with present technology. The potential barrier between the two wells can be modified by varying the currents in order to realize a quantum phase gate for qubit states encoded in the atomic external degree of freedom. The gate performance is analyzed through numerical simulations; the operation time is ~10 m…
