Measurement of the quadrupole moment of Re185 and Re187 from the hyperfine structure of muonic X rays
2020
The hyperfine splitting of the 5g→4f transitions in muonic Re185,187 has been measured using high resolution high purity germanium detectors and compared to state-of-the-art atomic theoretical predictions. The spectroscopic quadrupole moment has been extracted using modern fitting procedures and compared to the values available in literature obtained from muonic x rays of natural rhenium. The extracted values of the nuclear spectroscopic quadrupole moment are 2.07(5) b and 1.94(5) b, respectively for Re185 and Re187.
Quadrupole moments of radium isotopes from the 7p 2 P 3/2 hyperfine structure in Ra II
1988
The hyperfine structure and isotope shift of221–226Ra and212,214Ra have been measured in the ionic (Ra II) transition 7s 2 S 1/2–7p 2 P 3/2 (λ=381.4 nm). The method of on-line collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy has been applied using frequency-doubling of cw dye laser radiation in an external ring cavity. The magnetic hyperfine fields are compared with semi-empirical and ab initio calculations. The analysis of the quadrupole splitting by the same method yields the following, improved values of spectroscopic quadrupole moments:Q s (221Ra)=1.978(7)b,Q s (223Ra)=1.254(3)b and the reanalyzed valuesQ s (209Ra)=0.40(2)b,Q s (211Ra)=0.48(2)b,Q s (227Ra)=1.58(3)b,Q s (229Ra)=3.09(4)b with an ad…
A Unified Phenomenological Description of Quadrupole Excitations in Even-Even Nuclei
1976
A phenomenological model is developed for the collective quadrupole properties of all even-even nuclei. Rotational. vibrational and transitional nuclei are included in the model on an equal footing. A Bohr-type intrinsic Hamiltonian for harmonic quadrupole vibrations about an axially deformed shape is solved exactly. States of good angular momentum are projected out of the intrinsic states, and they are made orthogonal by a Schmidt scheme. The angular-momentum and phonon-number composition of the states is analyzed at various stages; states with K = 1 are found spurious. Excitation energies for the ground, β, and γ bands are calculated as expectation values of a radically simplified nuclear…
The distribution of galaxies gravitational field stemming from their tidal interaction
2015
We calculate the distribution function of astronomical objects (like galaxies and/or smooth halos of different kinds) gravitational fields due to their tidal in- teraction. For that we apply the statistical method of Chandrasekhar (1943), used there to calculate famous Holtzmark distribution. We show that in our approach the distribution function is never Gaussian, its form being dictated by the potential of interaction between objects. This calculation permits us to perform a theoretical analysis of the relation between angular momentum and mass (richness) of the galaxy clusters. To do so, we follow the idea of Catelan & Theuns (1996) and Heavens & Peacock (1988). The main differen…
Excitation of E1-forbidden Atomic Transitions with Electric, Magnetic or Mixed Multipolarity in Light Fields Carrying Orbital and Spin Angular Moment…
2019
Photons carrying a well-defined orbital angular momentum have been proven to modify spectroscopic selection rules in atomic matter. Excitation profiles of electric quadrupole transitions have been measured with single trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions for varying polarizations. We further develop the photo-absorption formalism to study the case of arbitrary alignment of the beam's optical axis with respect to the ion's quantization axis and mixed multipolarity. Thus, predictions for M1-dominated $^{40}Ar^{13+}$, E3-driven $^{171}Yb^+$ and $^{172}Yb^+$, and B-like $^{20}Ne^{5+}$ are presented. The latter case displays novel effects, coming from the presence of a strong photon -- magnetic dipole cou…

To identify the atomic number of superheavy nuclei produced in Ca-48-induced fusion-evaporation reactions, an experiment aiming at measuring characteristic X-rays is being prepared at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany. The gas-filled separator TASCA will be employed, sending the residues towards the multi-coincidence detector setup TASISpec. Two ion-optical modes relying on differing magnetic polarities of the quadrupole magnets can be used at TASCA. New simulations and experimental tests of transmission and background suppression for these two focusing modes into TASISpec are presented.
3D-Printable Model of a Particle Trap: Development and Use in the Physics Classroom
2019
Quadrupole ion traps are modern and versatile research tools used in mass spectrometers, in atomic frequency and time standards, in trapped ion quantum computing research, and for trapping anti-hydrogen ions at CERN. Despite their educational potential, quadrupole ion traps are seldom introduced into the physics classroom not least because commercial quadrupole ion traps appropriate for classroom use are expensive and difficult to set up. We present an open hardware 3D-printable quadrupole ion trap suitable for the classroom, which is capable of trapping lycopodium spores. We also provide student worksheets developed in an iterative design process, which can guide students while discovering…
Bose-Einstein Condensation in an electro-pneumatically transformed quadrupole-Ioffe magnetic trap
2014
We report a novel approach for preparing a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of $^{87}$Rb atoms using electro-pneumatically driven transfer of atoms into a Quadrupole-Ioffe magnetic trap (QUIC Trap). More than 5$\times$$10^{8}$ atoms from a Magneto-optical trap are loaded into a spherical quadrupole trap and then these atoms are transferred into an Ioffe trap by moving the Ioffe coil towards the center of the quadrupole coil, thereby, changing the distance between quadrupole trap center and the Ioffe coil. The transfer efficiency is more than 80 \%. This approach is different from a conventional approach of loading the atoms into a QUIC trap wherein the spherical quadrupole trap is transformed…
COLLECTIVE SPIN EXCITATIONS OF ALKALI-METAL CLUSTERS
1993
The response function of alkali-metal clusters, modeled as jellium spheres, to dipole (L=1) and quadrupole (L=2) spin-dependent fields is obtained within the time-dependent local-spin-density approximation of density-functional theory. We predict the existence of low-energy spin modes of surface type, which are identified from the strength function. Their collectivity and evolution with size are discussed.
Hyperfine-structure measurements on trapped Pb II.
1992
The 6${\mathit{P}}_{3/2}$-6${\mathit{P}}_{1/2}$ magnetic dipole resonance transition in ${\mathrm{Pb}}^{+}$ has been observed by cw laser excitation of an ion cloud stored in a Paul trap and subsequent detection of the fluorescence radiation. From the hyperfine-structure splitting of the spectrum we determine the A factor for the ground state, A(${\mathit{P}}_{1/2}$)=12.967(13) GHz, and the excited state, A(${\mathit{P}}_{3/2}$)=0.580(3) GHz. From a contamination of $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ in our sample we derived the $^{207}\mathrm{Pb}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}^{208}$${\mathrm{Pb}}^{+}$ isotope shift [\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\nu}=311(14) MHz]. A small electric quadrupole admixture …
