Magnetostrictive and quadrupolar anisotropy in nuclear magnetic fcc systems

1992

The spin hamiltonian for nuclear magnetic order in copper is investigated with respect to magnetoelastic couplings to the lattice. These arise due to the dipolar, Ruderman Kittel and the quadrupolar interaction. While the latter is quenched for the ideal fcc-lattice, it is found that for copper it will dominate the magnetoelastic terms of the nuclear spin hamiltonian. The absolute size of the quadrupole contribution is determined by the effective charge and (anti-) shielding effects. This interaction can give rise to an effective anisotropy in the fcc-system which can be quite large compared to the small stabilisation energies for nuclear order in copper. Consequences for the nuclear orderi…

The great attractor and the COBE quadrupole

2008

A nonlinear model for the Great Attractor is built. It is based on the Tolman-Bondi solution of the Einstein equations. The angular temperature distribution of the Cosmic Microwave Background produced by the Great Attractor is numerically obtained. Several realizations of the Great Attractor are studied. In all the cases, the distance from the Great Attractor to the Local Group is ≈ 43h−1 Mpc, the density contrast reduces to a half of the central value at a radius of 9h−1 Mpc ⪯ Rc ⪯ 14h−1 Mpc, and the dipole due to the infall towards the inhomogeneity center is 1.33 × 10−3 ⪯ D ⪯ 1.8 × 10−3. A complete arbitrary background is assumed; the density parameter, Σ and the reduced Hubble constant,…

The imprints of the Great Attractor and the Virgo cluster on the microwave background

1993

A fully non-linear model based on the Tolman-Bondi solution of the Einstein equations is used to describe the Great Attractor and the Virgo cluster. The background is a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe, and the inhomogeneity develops from physically motivated initial profiles of the energy density and the peculiar velocity. Accurate numerical integrations of the field equations of the null geodesics are carried out, and thus the angular temperature distribution of the microwave background produced by the chosen overdensities is found. The observer is located in the Local Group. The quadrupole Q produced by each overdensity is computed and divided into two parts: the relativistic Doppler …

Development of integrated superconducting quadrupole doublet modules for operation in the SIS100 accelerator

2015

The FAIR project (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) evolves and builds an international accelerator- and experimental facility for basic research activities in various fields of modern physics. Within the course of this project, integrated quadrupole doublet modules are in development. The quadrupole doublet modules provide a pair of superconducting main quadrupoles (focusing and defocusing), corrector magnets, cryogenic collimators and beam position monitors as integrated sets of ion-optical elements. Furthermore LHe cooled beam pipes and vacuum cold-warm transitions are used as ultra-high vacuum components for beam transportation. Superconducting bus bars are used for 13 kA curren…

Gradual freezing of orientational degrees of freedom in cubicAr1−x(N2)xmixtures

1995

The mixed crystal ${\mathrm{Ar}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$(${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$${)}_{\mathit{x}}$ is studied by Monte Carlo (MC) methods for x=0.33, 0.67, and 1.0 over a wide range of temperatures. For x=1 we find first-order transition from ordered cubic to disordered cubic, while for x=0.33 and x=0.67 we find broad nonuniform distribution functions of the local quadrupole Edwards-Anderson order parameter at low temperature. The short-range order of the quadrupolar mass distribution of the ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$ molecules in the mixed systems is different from that observed in the pure ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$ crystal, although the fcc symmetry has been chosen for the translational degrees…

Relativistic corrections to electrical first-order properties using direct perturbation theory.

2008

Direct perturbation theory (DPT) is applied to compute relativistic corrections to electrical properties such as dipole moment, quadrupole moment, and electric-field gradient. The corrections are obtained as second derivatives of the energy and are given via method-independent expressions that involve the first derivative of the density matrix with respect to the relativistic perturbation as well as property integrals with additional momentum operators. Computational results obtained using Hartree-Fock (HF), second-order Moller-Plesset (MP2) perturbation theory, and the coupled-cluster singles and doubles approach augmented by a perturbative treatment of triple excitations are presented for…

Relativistic Corrections and Unitary Equivalence

1992

Model calculations of the charge and quadrupole deuteron form factors were performed starting from a class of approximately unitary equivalent Hamiltonians and using consistent charge density operators. The approximate unitary equivalence was tested numerically and found to break down already for rather small values of momentum transfer.

Lowest- Q2 measurement of the γp → Δ reaction: Probing the pionic contribution

2006

To determine nonspherical angular momentum amplitudes in hadrons at long ranges (low Q^2), data were taken for the p(\vec{e},e'p)\pi^0 reaction in the Delta region at Q^2=0.060 (GeV/c)^2 utilizing the magnetic spectrometers of the A1 Collaboration at MAMI. The results for the dominant transition magnetic dipole amplitude and the quadrupole to dipole ratios at W=1232 MeV are: M_{1+}^{3/2} = (40.33 +/- 0.63_{stat+syst} +/- 0.61_{model}) (10^{-3}/m_{\pi^+}),Re(E_{1+}^{3/2}/M_{1+}^{3/2}) = (-2.28 +/- 0.29_{stat+syst} +/- 0.20_{model})%, and Re(S_{1+}^{3/2}/M_{1+}^{3/2}) = (-4.81 +/- 0.27_{stat+syst} +/- 0.26_{model})%. These disagree with predictions of constituent quark models but are in reaso…

Experimental and theoretical study of thenf-level lifetimes of potassium

2008

The theoretical and experimental values of the 5f ,6 f ,7 f, and 8f radiative lifetimes of neutral potassium are reported. The reduced matrix elements for all allowed electric-dipole nf5/2-nd5/2, nf5/2-nd3/2, and nf7/2-nd5/2 transitions with n =5–8 in K arecalculated using the relativistic linearized coupled-cluster method with single and double excitations of Dirac-Fock wave functions included to all orders in many-body perturbation theory. The resulting electric-dipole matrix elements are used to evaluate the lifetimes of the 5f ,6 f ,7 f, and 8f states in neutral K and their uncertainties. The contributions from the nf5/2-ng7/2, nf7/2-ng7/2, and nf7/2-ng9/2 transitions to the lifetimes o…

Revised values for the nuclear quadrupole moments ofS33andS35

2014

High-level quantum-chemical calculations are reported for the sulfur electric-field gradients of the CS and SiS molecules. Highly accurate values are obtained in these calculations by using coupled-cluster methods for the treatment of electron correlation together with large atomic-orbital basis sets and by taking into account relativistic effects. The computational results for the sulfur electric-field gradient are used to determine revised values for the $^{33}\mathrm{S}$ and $^{35}\mathrm{S}$ quadrupole moments, thereby taking advantage of available accurate values for the sulfur quadrupole couplings of CS and SiS from the analysis of rotational spectra. The derived values of $\ensuremat…
